View Full Version : Recommend me some depressing/thinking anime.

Recently I've gotten back into anime, I'm not sure why (I took like a 3 year break where I hardly watched anything, seriously!) but now I seem to be getting into it again, as my life is becoming more and more heavily Japanese. BUT! I'm not here to write a blog, so I'll get to the point. I noticed a lot of the anime I watch completely does not correspond with my taste in movies (Clockwork orange, Requiem for a dream, etc.) Instead, I watch playful or fun animes. Shaman king, One piece, Mahoromatic, and sometimes action/SF stuff, such as Ninja scroll, ghost in the shell, Fist of the north star, etc. The only real "drama" anime that I've seen is Rurouni kenshin, and, well I love it (as obvious, given my past-username...>_> my computer account is 検診 (kenshin, if you're an idiot and can't connect point A to B). So anyway, I really like kenshin and the story, a lot of the ideas etc. Some of the parts are very depressing too- which I like. (Always been a sort of depressing dude).
ANYWAY, fuck I know I like to ramble, I have english class this semester. So, today at lunch I was watching Haruhi (I hope you know what it is, I don't feel like typing it all out)- and one of the things they said made me realllllly think, I'm not sure exactly what it was. But, it made me feel sort of hopeless. On top of the fact that I've been watching kenshin like made the past week, it really got me thinking that I need to find some more anime along these lines. SO, I have a list of things that are already torrenting, I would like to add to it- please offer some help ;D
-Serial Experiments Lain (This one I wanted to see anyway, not sure if it's depressing or not)
-Koi Kaze
-5cm per second
I've already been to a few forums browsing what came up in google, they recommend Grave of the fireflies but I would prefer to stay away from anything WWII themed, it just does nothing for me. I think it was the over-exposure in the history classes, I would prefer something different. Thanks for all the help, if you have any questions just ask.
EDIT: I forgot to mention I prefer japanese audio with english subs, I really have not had good experiences with the english voice actors...

You probably know this but Neon Genesis Evangelion, um, I also don't watch a lot of really deep thinking anime. That's really the only thing I can think of.

Not to much into the mecha thing, and from what I understand it is a fairly long series- the stuff I have going now is either a movie or a short series. The longest thing I've torrented was 24 episodes long (lucky star). I would prefer something under that length, since my computer is also running out of space >_> (picking up an external HD for all this anime soon lol)

Okay, I get what you're saying. Um, I agree with you on the whole mecha thing. But Evangelion is one of my favorite animes of all time. The last 5-6 episodes just destroy your ego and consciousness. I'm thinking you'd like that. Um might want to just check out the movies instead then. It might not make to much sense since you haven't watched the anime. But it's worth a shot. I think there's something like three movies out now. Just so you know, there's are religious allegories all over the place.

I'll look into it, I plan on just keeping with what I have for now- this info I'm gathering is all for future reference. (My ISP is going to shoot me in the foot if I download too much) >_>

If its depressing your looking for, step right up and try 'Gunslinger Girl.'
Basically, its a Japanese anime about Italy and Italian government which takes young girls from troubled lives and gives them cybernetic enhancements so that they can fight terrorists. It seems childish and action oriented but actual shooting only consists of a few minutes each episode. The rest is just the girls and their handlers talking about very depressing things. Its definitely a mature anime (not ultra violent, or lots of sex, just adult-like), and seems like you might try it.
P.S. It has good voice actors both from the japanese and english versions. It was also released in Italian if your into that.
I've seen ergo proxy, and it is very good. But was lacking something for me. But if you lik ethat, you could look into 'Eureka Seven' personally my favorite anime, but it is a little more light hearted, especially at the beginning.

I see you've already put 5cm per second on the list. I say you should expand that to encompass everything Makoto Shinkai has made thus far.

Thanks for the long suggestion, now I feel a bit guilty for flaming you in the other thread. Oh well.

http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o437/PauloNeck/gunslinger_girl_1280x960.jpgWell IMO the girls are somewhat badass when they want to be, but yeah - not an action series. Character-driven slow-paced depressing drama about control and human weapons, with hyper-realistic action and guns.

The story was so bland, the ending didn't go ANYWHERE.

The story was so bland, the ending didn't go -ANYWHERE.I said "Character-driven" instead of mentioning anything about story for a reason. There is no meaningful plot to be found here, and such a thing was never the point of this anime.

Yes. One my favorites.
That may have a lot to do with me being a recluse though.
