It's a little CNC machine that fits on your desktop. You have to provide your own tooling, but the possibilities that it opens up for DIY projects more than makes up for that.

Alright. At first I was really unimpressed with the setup, and then I found out they use this software: http://www.linuxcnc.org/content/view/11/10/lang,en/
I think it is an interesting project, but too small.

It's cool, but I remember seeing a unit called the Zenbot for about the same price (no software included) that went way the hell faster than that thing does in the videos.

these machines are weak you can't really do anything them, get a cheap ass REAL mill, and retrofit, use the UHU contrller + DC motors turned servo via encoders

"Real" mills aren't within the budget of most people.

Can anyone here afford and carry a $1000 piece of equipment to their garage?

If it provides a long time of utility and learning, why not? Any simple piece you could dream of could be made with a relatively simple CNC mill. Just that idea alone makes me want to make one.

I want one, too. That doesn't mean I'm going to go out and buy one when I could construct one from off-the-shelf parts and cast whatever else I need.
