At the General Audience of Wednesday, 4 August 1999, following his catecheses on heaven and hell, the Holy Father reflected on Purgatory. He explained that physical integrity is necessary to enter into perfect communion with God therefore "the term purgatory does not indicate a place, but a condition of existence", where Christ "removes ... the remnants of imperfection".

What if the hardships that we face on Earth are the tools that mold us into perfection and teach us to be like God and love unconditionally. Once we succeed on Earth, then we may proceed into heaven. If you fail in your life on Earth, then you reincarnate until you are pure. Then you move on to heaven.
But this brings the question what came before Earth, and what we did to be here. Maybe the others start out pure, and don't have to go to Earth.
