View Full Version : Subs or Dubs?

I find it easier to follow the story line with dubs.. but maybe that is because I am an anime noob :(

Does the true Anime enthusiast watch with subs only?

I'm not an Anime enthusiast but i much prefer subs, even on foreign films.

The people they get for dubs are shitty actors, and the voice never matches character. Some phrases and the tone doesn't sound right in English.

Also, fansubs have better translations than most "official" subs/dubs.

Subs for any foreign media are generally better. There are some decent/non-atrocious dubs, but they're both generally rare, and are still inferior to the original version. There might be some instances where the dub is better than the original, but I've never encountered such a thing, so I can't help but doubt the possibility.

It's not so much that I'm a media snob... but once I adjust to something, the alternative annoys me way too much. I probably wouldn't mind dubs if that's all I thought was out there. Something is definitely better than nothing... but most of the voices they get for dubs just remind me of some crappy kids cartoon, and when that happens, I have more trouble taking it seriously, as an art form.

What about cowboy be-bop? I Thought the voice actors did a good job. No?

I find that if I am following a movie with subs I miss alot of the screenplay because I'm always reading, even if the people are speaking English.

Then again, most dubs suck really, really badly unless its a really derivative anime or if it has high production costs.

If you like subs, youd best have a ridiculously high tolerance for equally ridiculously high-pitched female voice actors.

i can't watch anime unless it's subbed.

Depends on the series, some have really good dubs, others really bad. Sometimes really really bad.

Good dubs:

- Cowboy Bebop (one of, if not the best, Steve Blum ftw!)

- Neon Genesis (Shinji's whining wasn't so bad, Gendo was spot on)

- Ranma 1/2 ( I just couldn't stand it subbed)

Bad dubs:

- Dragon Ball Z (it might not be so bad if it wasn't edited to "HFIL" and back)

- Naruto (believe it!)

- Actually pretty much any Shonen title usually has a pretty bad dub to it.

Should be fairly obvious if youve seen a few, but the list of good dubs also includes pretty much every ghibli film ever made.

subs all the way. after seeing naruto dubbed i couldnt go any other way. unless i can only see dubbed. they censor so much. like naruto when lee fights kimimaroo with drunken fist style karate they say the alcohol is medicine or something and fighing is loopy fists. i cant remember exactly but it was such a joke and didnt make sense. id love to see what they would do with one piece especially with the recent manga chapters. also with subs they tend to give better translations in general and explanations or cultural similarities.

Yeah, I really like it when the fan subbers will put in cultural information. The only examples I can think of right now is before Naruto eats Ramen, he always says Ikatdasuki or something like that. (I know, I butchered it) Or like in FLCL how the kids are freaking out about crystal pepsi, and when I watched a fansub they actually explained that.

SUBSS!!!!!

It's like I'm reading a fucking book or something, it's great.

I remember I went on a 2 day Ghost In The Shell spree where I watched like everything near enough back to back. Afterwards I tried watching one of the movies which was dubbed. OMFG, how bad do they want to make the voice acting? It was absolutely woeful and I just fell asleep.

Pussy ass channels over in the west should stop wasting their time and money with shitty dubs and just go for the subs. Everyone wins.

^^to poster above, yeah I like that too. But it's shitty when you have 2 bits of text to read at the same time and you only really have time to read one and half of the other. Can't exactly be pausing when you're snuggled up in bed watching shit.

Subs. All the way. I have a dub of Gantz, and it's okay, but I much prefer subs.

Subs. I'm not a native english speaker but I can keep up with english subs and see the picture with ease. Even if they add extra lines explaining cultural crap and so on above. Its all a matter of getting used to, after a while only giving a quick glimpse to the subs is enough to read it out full.

Yea I've found that too. I remember back in school I would have trouble reading out loud stumbling over the words, not able to look ahead to see which word is coming next. I was at a hearing to get my license back and the board asked me to read a page out of a book and I read out loud with ease.

I don't watch anime, but on foreign films, subs are definitely better. You lose all the tone and original emotion portrayed by the actors when you use dubs. And they just sound gay.

Subs or Dubs either way for me, what ever one comes first but sometimes the dubs are just so bad you have to use subs. but nothing is worse the subs and dubs at the same time. it's hell because you see the differences and you get hungup every time.

I will admit, when I first saw the title of this thread in the hot topics section, I thought you would be debating whether you should get sub woofers for your car or a nice set of rims.

I much prefer subs as I find the majority of dubs are annoying because of (a) bad voice actors or (b) terrible matching concerning the movement of a character's mouth and that which is being said.

Over time if you watch enough anime you'll often find that you begin to understand many Japanese words, terms, and phrases so that you don't have to pay so much attention to the subtitles:

http://users.tmok.com/~tumble/amfaqs/101glos.html

So yeah, subs own dubs.

As a rule, subs are better. There are a few notable exceptions in a select few titles though.

I have a 2 minute rule (where applicable). If the dub is not good by 2 minutes, I switch to subs.

lmao when i heard "subs or dubs" i thought this was a car related thread about whether you should buy subs (subwoofers) or dubs (chromed out rims)

Upon realizing that its not, I still would prefer buying subs before dubs because even if your tires look like shit, at least you got a bumpin system to feel hood about.

Preferably, I'll take subs over the dubs any day.

But we must all realize that certain series are just better in English.

I cannot possible imagine Cowboy Bebop in Japanese. Why? Because the dub was actually good. Shocker, really!

Rurouni Kenshin... Again. English did it better. Kenshin's voice was the biggest buzz kill, right beside Goku from DBZ. If I watched it in Japanese (and I had the option and attempted it) I'd still be laughing.

Granted that some dubs were actually good, it hardly accounts for the countless dubs that are terrible.

You just can't take it seriously. Not one bit. They fuck up the dialogue, change a lot of the script and Americanize it to the best of their ability. I mean really, why did they call Miso soup, Cereal!?

...; Nuff said. Subs FTW.

are you serious miso soup is cereal and dubs ftw? i love your humor. i loved hearing loopy fists but miso soup is cereal that definitely beats it. youre right if you want to laugh your ass off dubs are definitely much better. if you want to know what theyre saying and significance of what they say subs. but why watch anything if its not to laugh or be confused? dubs all the way!

Subs... SUBS. Dubs are corny and have shitty acting, most of the time. I find the Japanese acting much more skilled and fitting.

Shisno
2008-12-09, 23:56
Mostly subs. It seems that the voice actors in the original Japanese are much better at conveying the emotions of the characters. They vary their tone and inflection, and it seems that they put their whole self into their voice acting. Also, it seems that most of the popular dubs today almost always use about the same 10 voice actors, and they always sound EXACTLY the same. But like what's been said before, some shows get it right, like Cowboy Bebop and Rurouni Kenshin. Not mentioning the fact that there are so many good anime out there that have yet to be dubbed.

2008-12-10, 21:11
I guess it kinda goes both ways with me. Some times a lot of things are lost in dubbing (like in FLCL), but sometimes the voice acting is extremely acceptable (like in Boogiepop Phantom)

The only time i watch subbed anime is when i'm in the middle of an on-going series and i run out of dubbed episodes but don't want to wait till more are released.

I don't have problem watching dub anime, so don't care.

The dubs for Black Lagoon and GitS are especially good it has to be said.

I really can't stand dubbing in most films (Spaghetti westerns can be forgiven), so definitely subs! Anime dubbed always sounds really cheesy and American and shit...
