Hey i am a new marijuana grower, i am currently growing outdoors.
But i have recently bought 400watt hydroponics and am waiting on an air duct and fan.

I have been told that the hydroponics uses up only $50 a year, and the fan would be even less.
- some totsean.

this to me is one of thoes, too good to be true.
Leaving hydroponics on for 18hours a day = $50 a year?
If anybody can confirm or deny this please tell me.

I am thinking of hooking both the fan and the light up to a car battery,
is this an easy task?
Would it be possible?

car battery wouldn't work. as for the hydroponics $50 a year is probably about right depending on what type of system you're running because mainly all thats running is an air pump and or water pump and those don't take a lot of juice. the light is where you're power consumption comes from. i'm not sure about what a 400w would come out to cost wise but growing indoors in dirt with a 1000w hps and some fans set on thermostats averaged about $50 a month or so for a friend of mine.

I should add in too that you're not running for 18 hours a day all the time. We grew AK-47 and it was something like this

24 hours for clones for about 2 weeks under 150w hps
18 hours for veg. for about 30 days under 1000w hps
12 hours for flowering (budding) for 35-40 days under 1000w hps

but all strains are different and some flower quicker than others.

Thank you for confirming that it is only about $50.
Screw the battery i might as well run it off my own power if its that cheap..

EDIT:
In your post you wrote that your friends hydroponics worked out to be about $50 a month.
is this a typo, did you mean a year?

You realize that even if you did run it off battery power, you'd have to charge the battery back up with your own power, losing about 40% of the energy in the charge-discharge process as waste heat, right?

.. And that running a 500w load off of a car battery will run it totally flat in about 40 minutes? ..

This. You can't save money by using a rechargeable battery. Charging and discharging use energy in the form of heat.

And this.

Running a normal car battery flat a few times in a row will destroy it as well. Standard lead-acid batteries don't like to be taken down past 70% of their capacity regularly.

Slacker is also correct in that running 1000w worth of lights for 20 hours a day is probably about $50 a month. He was saying that running the pumps costs $50 a year, which in my opinion is probably a low figure.

If you're using 20kwh a day, at 10 cents per kwh that's $2 per day. 12kwh (the 40 day cycle) per day would cost $48 for those 40 days.

Just think yourself lucky you're paying half what I do over in the UK for electricity...

I don't even get what you are trying to figure out?

1000Watt @ 1 hour is NZ$0.15cents
so
times that by hrs used in a day (20hrs) equals NZ$3.00

NZ$3.00 times days in a month (30days) equals NZ$90.00 per month

> So 1x 1000watt bulb is going to cost you $90 a month <

A fan uses so little power its not going to affect the power much.

Now theres NO WAY that you are going to run a 1000Watt bulb off a car battery.

Thats almost as silly as the idea I heard of someone growing using solar panels to power bulbs so he could grow.
I said "Why don't you cut all the bullshit & put them directly under the solar source?"

He said "Whats that?"

"The fukking SUN!"

Nah im not running it off my car battery anymore
The solar panels would be a good idea, if they recieved enough power to run hydroponics
but leaving them in the sun is not an option because my family are anti drug..

Also the light is 400 watt, how would i work out how much that is in NSW, Australia?

If its $50 - $100 then i just have to sell 5 - 10 grams a month to be clear.

you are to stupid to grow pot, just stop now unless your are selling it to me.

If you can't figure out how to calculate the power usage of your equipment and factor your time spent into the price you want to sell it....just stop now

keep growing your shitty bush and sell it to the natives for about tree fiddy, even then if you add in the time spent you would still be better off working min wage with no chance of jail time

It is also telling me that Archimedes_Soul watched South Park last night.

Lol. i honestly have no idea how to workout the total for 400watts left on for about 18 hours a day.

Is there some website you go to for the conversion of watts to dollars?
Is it written on your electricity bill?
:confused::confused::confused:

But i do agree, south park is quite enjoyable. :D

I don't mean to be rude, but what's the highest level of school you've completed? I only ask b/c I think you may be a minor living at your parents house, as any high school grad should know how to do what you're asking how to do.
Is it written on your electricity bill? Now that's the kind of business I want to own; one where you just bill your customers and they don't even know how you come up with the charges, they just pay it, no questions asked.

Oh Fuk!

Look, its probably a good idea to not grow anything on your property.

If you can't work out that a 400W bulb would use 40% of the power a 1000Watt bulb would use, then dammit, Don't grow.

& I said that a solar panel charged battery with a 12V DC to a 240 V AC converter etc etc is not a feasable idea.

NOT that it was a 'good idea!' or even usable!

400W bulb would use 40% of the power a 1000Watt bulb would use.
!

so 40% times $90 =
$36.

Thats pretty cheap..
