I am trying to figure out if a North American 4 year BSc in Engineering is equivalent to a UK 2:1 MEng.

As far as I understand the UK MEng is a 4 year program and is considered undergrad meaning that it is not acutally a masters degree. Therfore it is probably equavelent to the North American BSc. If this is not the case then please let me know.

I believe that the 2:1 is 2nd Class Honours, which is related to the marks that you get. As far as what mark a person needs to achieve 2nd class honors I am completely lost, although it can't be too high as Wikipedia states "about 45% of all graduates achieve a 2:1". Is anyone able to convert this to the 4.0 GPA scale, a letter grade or even a percentage?

Thanks

Why do you need to know?

I am looking at a Internship in the UK and in the application form it asks if I am enrolled/registered in a 2:1 MEng or equivalent program.

I think you have the first half right. I have no idea about the second half.

Right - the MEng is a 4 year undergraduate simply due to the fact that there's no lack in continuity between finishing third year and moving onto postgraduate, considered a 'Masters by teaching' (I'm on an MSci undergrad myself) - the final result is a postgraduate degree (in name, despite what Wikipedia et al may say), so unfortunately there's a disparity between the equivalency of that and your BSc.

2:1 is Upper Second Class Honours, degree classification goes First, 2:1, 2:2, Third...

First - 70%+
2:1 - 60-69%
2:2 - 50-59%
Third - 40-49%

Hope that helps!

I think that I am starting to understand that there is really no equivalent. As far as I understand A-levels means you end up by taking 1 more year (year 13) then us (12 years). As a result someone getting a MEng in the UK takes 5 years where as a BSc in Canada is 4 years. The 3 year BEng in the UK is not really a BSc in Canada as UK schools talk about how the BEng doesn’t do a ‘final project’ where as the MEng does and similarly the BSc in Canada does a final project as well.
I am just going to have to talk to the company then. They probably won’t want me but that isn’t anything new.

Say "yes."
Disguise yourself as someone else, and then ask the university after applying.
If they accept you, and you know after learning about what it involves you can't do your duties, kindly decline the offer.

Preferably disguise yourself first, ask, and then apply.
