Hey, I don't watch anime (I've seen Animatrix) and I was wondering what some good cyberpunk anime's would be?

PS: anime isn't as gay as I once thought.

Ghost in the shell

This.

But not the movie, the series:

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Might take a while for you to get into it, but when you get hooked: you're fucking hooked on it.

Cowboy Bebop (to an extent)

Ohh, here is a basic list:

I can also recommend Appleseed and Ergo Proxy from that list.

So...where do you make the distinction between cyberpunk and simply scifi? Because I wouldn't really consider some of those cyberpunk.

Well, dieselpunk and steampunk are both subgenres of science fiction. SF is a superset of many subgenres, one of which is cyberpunk.

Specifically, cyberpunk has more to do with man's involvement with technology in present and the near future. Tpics would include cyber terrorism, artificial life, cyborgs, etc. While it is true that SF can incorporate those topics into its stories, cyberpunk makes how technology effects mankind as its central theme.

Science fiction has to respect and follow the laws of science to some extent. I've never heard of "cyber punk" but as an example in cowboy bebop when spike holds his breath and does his "floating act" that would be unacceptable for science fiction.

cyberpunk is scifi that's heavy on political themes. usually it's about violent social change or the little guy against the government.

akira's probably the best example of cyberpunk because you have all these government forces working against each other and then you have social disorder, riots, rampant crime, and some weird kid running around destroying everything with his freaky mind powerz.

i'd say that all of the series mentioned in this thread count as cyberpunk except guyver. wtf?

try metropolis.

I wouldn't call Akira cyberpunk. Cyberpunk requires a lot more ``tech stuff'' than Akira had.

but to answer OP, if you want cyberpunk anime, you want Serial Experiments Lain. It has hackers, Lisp, Lambda Knights, everything that you'll ever want.

Akira is Cyberpunk, though its not as obvious as something like Blade Runner (the exemplar of Cyberpunk). Although it might feel more comfortable lumped in with Biopunk (a subdivision of Cyberpunk). But how did you miss the great tech stuff, especially in the bikes... or the LASER rifle...

The Difference between Scifi and Cyberpunk is society. In traditional scifi, technology is a good thing and has made lives better. But Cyberpunk shows the degradation of society and peoples lives (especially their morals) with, and as a result of, high technology. Often this is shown with Film Noir techniques.

I disagree with this. Look at Neuromancer, the definitive work of cyberpunk. It may look gritty and 'degraded', but in reality, people's lives are incredibly enriched by the technology, and transcending the 'meat' is a major theme.

I don't think 'really fast bikes' or 'laser rifles' qualifies Akira as cyberpunk any more than Star Wars (hey, that has fast bikes AND lasers!!). I don't know what this 'biopunk' is, but it didn't seem to be that either.

In any event, Serial Experiments Lain is 100% cyberpunk. I want to just stress that again, because I don't usually like anime, but I loved Lain just because of the incredible cyberpunk.

Neuromancer

I read that but it made absolutely no sense. I got that it was about a guy who did hacking things, there were drugs and sex and fight scenes in there somewhere, and something about an AI who was going to do bad things of some kind to the world and the main character had to stop him. Other than that I was completely lost.

Then you don't get cyberpunk. It is hard to get, though.

It's something you feel. When you watch a good ole cyberpunk film/anime it evokes a certain feeling of emptiness and despair within you... Like the future looks very bleak.

I must look like a dick by now, but I disagree with this too. I always feel really elated after a good cypberpunk book/anime, typically because the protagonist transcends the meatspace and reaches enlightenment.

Yeah, I think you do get a sense of that from it, but in a very grungy, dirty, way.
