So I just registered to vote, however I am considering not voting this year. I realize that is a waste, however I do not feel that I know enough about the various parties to justify a vote.

So, onto the question. I want to further my understanding of the various political parties, so that I can make the most of my vote.

I don't really know what the various parties stand for. I can easily distinguish between the stand points of the parties in the US, but my knowledge is very gray concerning the parties in the UK.

Can anyone point me to some information that will help me?

Try the party's own policy websites. The big 3:

http://www.labour.org.uk/labour_policies
http://www.conservatives.com/Policy.aspx
http://www.libdems.org.uk/policies

And the RESPECT party manifesto, something I believe anyone with a vote in the UK should read ;) :

http://www.respectcoalition.org/index.php?sec=39
http://www.respectcoalition.org/index.php?ite=1655

You're probably finding it hard to distinguish between the big 2 because their policies in practice aren't all that different at the moment.

He may as well check out the British National Party as well then.

Personally I'd just vote Liberal Democrats for the lulz.
