by placing xNO3 into a crucible and heating to its decomp. point is it possible to make a good portion of xNO2?

by good portion I mean ~100gm

Besides the fact I'm going to be messing with a molten oxidiser here are there any special safety precautions I should be aware of?

When should I stop heating?

would It be advisable to skip collection of the O2 for other fun (inhalation) or is it possible to cheaply and effectively remove any contaminants using masonjar/2liter chemistry.

mind you I'm not going to be making it all at once, thats stupid and crazy to have so much molten flaming death in a cup that spews forth gaseous flaming explosive death the whole time.

and yes this is to be used for poppers, I would like to have both a medicine and fun inhalant in my cupboard.

So what exactly are you trying to do?

You want to take a metal nitrate, heat it in a crucible in order to collect gaseous oxygen and gaseous NO2, and leave the metal oxide as a solid?

Then react NO2 to make poppers?

somewhow, I'm not convinced this is going to work...

ummmm....noooooooo

xNO3 + heat ---> xNO2 + O

xNO2 + H2SO4 ---> HNO2

HNO2 + Alcohol ----> alkyl nitrite

not balanced but its whats going to happen pretty much

Fair enough.

Not really something I know a great deal about...

Can you actually prevent full decomposition of the metal nitrate without control on the pressure etc?

Also, I would be tempted to generate the the nitrous acid in situ rather than running it in two steps...
