It's funny you think there was ever such a singular culture. Rather, what there often is in a nation-state is a common set of ideals or principles, which is still what we have today. This is set and maintained not by ethnicity or religion, but by our common political ideals set out by the enlightenment and classical liberalism. Conforming to so-called "culture" is sheepish at best and can lead to individuals not thinking critically for themselves at worst. I would rather everyone think critically and question the world around them.
