Saw a trailer today... And what the fuck?!

Does not look like the Max Payne I know. If they aren't going to follow the game storyline, don't bother making a Max Payne game... Urghhh. I loved the first one, never played the second, are they pulling crap from it?

so you're saying they should have just recorded an hour and a half of gameplay and slapped in some credits?

seriously, man. what the fuck do you expect? from what I can see of it, it looks great. did you even pay attention to the fucking game, or did you just drool over the bullet time?

do you NOT remember the surreal dream sequences, and heavy nods to Norse Mythology? those are Valkyries, man. not guardian angels.

even if it does blow, atleast Uwe Boll didn't get ahold of it. nonetheless, I'm really looking forward to it.

To me, it's obviously shaping up to be one of the few game-to-movie conversions that won't blindside its fanbase, and you can't win everyone over.

I'd also like to bring attention to the fact that an independent film was actually being produced by fans, and was close to completion until Fox bought the rights and shut them down... temporarily. They're back at it now - starting from scratch, developing an altogether new production. Check it out via the links below, these guys are dedicated.

I see no reason to be complaining at this point. It looks like they've captured the spirit of the game and actually got creative with the basic concept. When I first heard they were making this movie, I envisioned something that look like the Punisher 2 trailer (ie. crap), so I'm really impressed that they made what looks like an artistically-inspired movie with action and grittiness.

I figure at worst it will have lots of gunplay and some cool dream sequences, so...I'm down.

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOFLI9nmMdU

It sounds like they actually have gone the paranormal route, but I don't care. The games always did have this trippy/paranormal feel in the background, so I don't care as long as it isn't like...an indirect remake of Constantine. (but then again, I thought Constantine was pretty awesome)

^ I'm not convinced they turned it into a paranormal thriller. It's supposed to be noir, which has alot of figurative imagery. Aside from that one scene with the black guy getting pulled out of the window, the rest of the valkyrie scenes don't have to be taken literally.

I think they could have had better casting for Mona Sax, but still not bad.

Overall, it looks to be one of the best videogame => movie adaptations yet. Not that the source material is that hard to work with :P.

im not to sure on this movie yet, im going to have to see it, via torrents. A few things they should have was #1. make wahlberg talk with a grittier voice, more true to max payne, and have the comic book sequences between scenes, that would be amazing.

Movies =/= videogames =/= comics.

I mean, I don't even know what the movie is structured like yet, but wanting comic-book things just because it was in the game is dumb.

The trailer doesn't suggest the gothicness that made the game great but seems to go way over board on the supernatural elements. When the fuck is there a big flying bat in the game? The only "otherworldly" bits should be the drug sequences (which definitely should be kept in in some form and should be creepy as fuck).
From what I've heard there will be no blood or gore effects, no swearing and will be aimed at 12 year olds. This is going to suck just as much as hitman.

Reviews are in. Apparently it's great from a visual/artistic perspective, but the plot/writing/coherence is shit. Still...I'm a sucker for good visuals, so I'll go and see it on matinee prices.

seen it earlier today (well, thursday night).

all-together: I liked it quite a bit.

if you're expecting action out the ass; don't even bother. this IS a film; and it's meant to be accesable to most everyone (including people unfamiliar with the video game series). so alot of it is set-up. but in short, what action there is; is fucking sweet. and if even if you're anxious, I'd say it's worth the slow waits.

it follows the first game, and doesn't go much further. as little as I remember of the first game's story, this brought alot of it back to me. atleast the more important moments of it. so with the film having to sum everything up into about an hour and half, it manages pretty well.

'bullet-time' isn't over-used, thankfully. infact, it's hardly even aknowleged; besides one point where he intentionally falls backwards with a shotgun. the rest is basically typical slow-motion, in a stylish fashion.

and speaking of style; the style of the film is probably the coolest thing about it. it's really true to the game's own. and at many points, it's almost breathtaking. almost every point in the film is like the 'comic'-styled pieces inbetween chapters of the game.

Its funny how I've played all the hitman games and watched the movie and hated it, yet my mom who HATES the games "Because they are too violent and make you think like a cold blooded killer" totally loved the hitman movie and literally watched it 12 times in one week.

How is the dialogue and narration? Is there still a ton of cheesy noir grit?

If there is, that automatically makes the movie awesome.

ObsidianZ; the intro of the film moves into one of those "one week before" scenes, and the film goes on from there.

as it is the intro, I wouldn't be spoiling much. the movie starts with Max Payne under water; and it has a really trippy feel to it (as most of the movie -- and the game/s -- does). as I've said -- every part of the movie feels like the intermission 'comic' pieces from the video game. which is great. the movie does a really good transition of that much.

but the scene I've made mention of is basically the only narration part.

I'm pretty dissapointed with the reviews, so far. it's alot more diserving than a 17%! atleast IMDB is giving it some justice, with a 7.5.

but there is bound to be some devision over it. I really think it's true enough to the games to where if you don't have that aquireable Max Payne taste, that you really just won't get it.

just give it a chance. I'd really like to see a sequel out of this.

Max Payne fan here. I loved the games, but I thought the movie was a huge disappointment. They could have done so much more with it, but it seems like the character development and plot was very poor. The game was basically designed like a film noir movie, so you'd think they couldn't possibly fuck it up... but they still manage to make it pretty lame.

As for bullet time, half the game was bullet time sequences... how would that make the film worse? I was expecting it to be done, but it wasn't.

This is a good movie. A lot better than most of the shit that comes out every week. Watched it last Thursday night. I have to admit it made me jump out of my seat a couple times. It does drag through most of the movie but the end makes up for it. People should be watching this instead of the dumb ass dog movie out right now.

I do have to say, though, if you look at the front page of rottentomatoes (I don't know how it is on other movie review sites) pretty much every single movie that has come out recently has been getting shitty ratings.

Max Payne got #1 in box office, btw. Say hello to Max Payne 3 and possibly another movie.

It got #1 because everyone was expecting a movie version of the game, not some shitty, I dont know, whatever the hell it really was. Why even call it Max Payne? Almost nothing from the game was in the movie. The game had a plot perfect for a movie. Instead they changed it completely, even the gender of the baby.

I hated this movie. I am a die-hard Max Payne fan too.

Grade: F

Beyond the death of his wife and daughter, I don't even know what the plot of either game is. I don't care either, since I played for action, not the story. But regardless, why would you want to see the same plot you had already played through in the game? I haven't seen MP yet (going tomorrow), so I don't know if the plot really sucks, but if it's only different...who cares? I hated the plot changes in the Silent Hill movie, for instance, because they changed the plot to something lame and retarded (ie. the games' mythology gave them SO much cool shit they could have done, but they dumbed it down to a simple ghost-revenge plot).

Hands down, best videogame movie ever made

Even by general film standards, this was a quality film. I'm so glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews I read, because it's clear to me now that most of the critics who didn't like this movie are idiots. Yes: idiots.

The first review I read complained that the movie was ambiguous about the fate of Max's kid. Bullshit. BB clearly says that the kid was murdered, and there's no reason to assume otherwise. This dumbass also thought that the brief reference to Chris O Donnell's daughter had something to do with Max's son. He was confused by the demon hallucinations (even though it's painfully clear that they are just that: hallucinations), and he claimed the Max magically got out of his handcuffs, although you clearly see and hear his captor take them off.

Few things are more annoying than people who don't pay attention and then have the nerve to trash movies.

With that rant out of the way: This movie delivered on so many levels. It had to appeal to the videogame fans and the average moviegoer who wasn't familiar with it, and I think it succeeded on both counts and beyond. (Though, to be fair, most fanboys are unappeasable faggots, but...any sane gamer should would be pleased) It perfectly captured the gritty, comic-book-esque style of the game. It had plenty of action. It even had the game's dark, mildly cheesy sense of humor. What really impressed me was the visual style. I remember one poster here said that they hoped the movie had comic-book frames...well, even better: Practically every frame of this film could be a picture from a graphic novel. People shit themselves over Sin City, yet I think this movie's visual style is equally impressive. (Obviously not as immediately striking, but...just as effective, IMO)

There were some mild lags here and there, but the action was pretty well-paced, very badass, and surprisingly realistic. I don't understand any of the complaints about the plot. A pharmaceutical company designed some drugs to enhance soldiers' performance. It had fucked up side-effects. People got killed, and Max's hunt for his wife's killer leads him to the conspiracy. I'm baffled if gamers were disappointed by that plot, and any nongamers who were confused...well, they're just fucking retarded, as far as I'm concerned.

I was curious what they would do with bullet-time. The game was the pioneer of that stuff, but it's so overused and gimmicky nowadays, I was wondering if they'd use it at all. I was pleasantly surprised. They had a handful of slow-motion scenes that were perfectly executed (ie. the beginning of the office shootout when the camera is panning in on Wahlberg's face as he realizes what's going on) and there was really only one "bullet-time" action sequence, and they surprisingly managed to think of something we hadn't seen before.

The movie's score was great...I loved that sort of ambient, "throbbing" sound that played throughout the film. Like, just minutes into the movie when he's walking in the subway--fucking great.

Now, what did I dislike? Mona Sax. I consider femme fatales to be lame, unbelievable characters anyway, but Mila Kunis is terrible for the role. I could perhaps see her acting in some other types of dramatic roles, but a gun-toting Ukrainian assassin? Bitch please.

Ludacris was fine, but unfortunately for him, I think he'll be forever associated with "MOVE BITCH, GET OUT THE WAY". I just couldn't get his rap career out of my head when he was on screen.

So, all in all...10/10 by video-game movie standards, 8/10 by action-movie standards, and 7/10 by general standards. I daresay that anyone who truly disliked this movie is either a pussy or an idiot. Even if you weren't crazy about the plot, any testosterone-possessing man should enjoy 90 minutes of Wahlberg scowling and being badass.

Bah. I didn't mind or notice the PG-13 rating at all. The only difference is that there weren't any bloody headshots, and you didn't get to see that small-chested Ukrainian chick naked. In Canada only movies like Saw get an "R"-equivalent rating. I would have assumed Max Payne was R if I hadn't heard otherwise on the internet.

Why did you hate Hitman movie? I have played through all three Hitman games, and I didnt love nor hate the movie. It had its good aspects and its bad, just like most movies.

And about max payne...I played it a loooooong time ago. All I really remember, were cut scenes about "V" the drug. I also remember it was either a dream, or when he was on the drug...you are in a black area, with some red veins or intestine that you walk on, and it is very narrow so you usually fall down and die, and a baby is crying in the background. It was pretty creepy to me back then. I dont see too much of a plot here? Your family gets murdered (if I remember correctly) then you go out to find the killer? Like I said, I havent played the game in a long time.

Max Payne (the game) was excellent because of the plot. It was a lot deeper than him going out to find the killer. I loved it. I would have loved a movie'd version of the plot. Instead its a mediocre cop film with cheesy Valkyries thrown in. BAHHH

I hope you enjoy it though.

ok, just saw it.

Lupino died way too easily.

Natasha was hot (when she was in 1 piece).

Max got too emo at times, wasn't hard enough.

I think 1 more bullet time sequence where took out a group 1 by 1 with shots to the head would have been cool.

Nonetheless, pretty decent movie. Gonna go shoot some ass now.
