Should I do it? As I said, it's in working condition, but it needs a rebuild, and I figured, hell, a monkey could work on those engines so it would be a really good opportunity to get some real experience under my belt.

I'm pretty serious about this. I've never really been serious about much when it comes to engines, I've mostly done small engines, I have very limited experience with actual car engines, so I figured this would be a great place to start.

Thoughts? Questions? Comments?

What I figured I would do with this is stick it in my future car. As many know, I was going to buy something with a Chevy small block anyways, so best start early, eh?

I'll give you 150 for it.

What's it out of? carbed or fi? etc.

There's a couple of them, I'm going to look at them tomorrow.

The guy I called said that there were 4-6 Carburated ones, and 1 or 2 FI ones.

I'm gonna go for a Carb'd if I do get one.

What should I look for to get the best one out of the bunch?

You should get the fi. Why would you not want to go fuel injected?

Because carb'd is much simpler.

Megasquirt or the equivalent shouldn't be too hard to setup. Hell, Argon could probably help you out.

Carbs really are easier to work with.

I say buy it, worst case scenario you pull the heads/crank/pistons, fill the oil pan with ice, and use it as a cooler.

get the one with a crank that turns...

see if you can determine which of the engines have 4 bolt mains.
choose one of those, if there are any

def make sure its not seized and if you can pull off the oil pans on them and look for 4 bolt mains as said above. Truck engines had 4 bolt mains so if the guy knows that it came from a truck for sure it will have 4 bolt mains.

Why should I go for one with 4 main bolts?

Why should I go for one with 4 main bolts?Because they're stronger and will allow you to build the engine up (383 stroker ;)) much more if you ever want to.
"Four bolt mains are considered much stronger for high performance use than a 2 bolt main. Using 4 bolts to secure the main bearing caps reduces the amount of flex within the crankshaft as compared to 2 bolts. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-Bolt_Mains)"

Buy it, and when you get bored with it, sell it on for more, or get your money back in scrap metal.

not all trucks came with 4 bolt main engines. but a 4 bolt main carb motor should have 010 casted on the back of the block by the head

Ok I stand corrected.
I was told a while back that 4 bolt main 350's were pulled out of trucks. Guess they guy that told me was wrong. Hell it wouldnt be the first time he got his info all screwed up.

yeah, I too heard 350 truck motors had 4 bolt mains, typically.
Ir's probably really true, with exceptions.

yes most 70's and early 80's trucks had 4 bolts expesially 3/4 and 1 tons. but i've run across truck motors that were 2 bolt.
