Ok, so I'm helping this guy build what he feels to be the ultimate bolt action rifle for his purposes.

And I'm a bit lost on a certain accessory.

He said he wanted a night vision scope and was quite prepared to drop $12,000 on a Raptor 6x which I talked him out of because that effectively turns it into a "night only" rifle.

And I posted a similar question before and R_L directed me towards a unit like this http://tinyurl.com/4rbbc4, the most expensive one on the page is what I'm looking at as he said he wants the highest quality possible, and I don't see 4th Gen rail mounted units (Is 4th Gen even real, or is it markerting hype?)

Because it attaches infront of the day optic when you need to solve a low light problem.

The day scope is going to be either a Nightforce or S&B if I have any say in the project :D

But it will most likely be a Khales or Zeiss hunting scope as this guy is completely sold on them.

It will be mounted in top of the line rings.

But the base is where I run into problems...

Does anyone know of an extra long 1913-type rail for the short action Remingon 700 that is long enough to attach both a day optic and NV device to?

I've look and looked and all I've found was 9" rails and I'm not sure if it's long enough, maybe it is I don't know.

But any help regarding where I could find a suitable rail would be extremely helpful.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Should I just reccomend that he buy this?

Says it can be used in broad daylight and I believe ELCAN is a top shelf company, even though it is only 2x.

I think you can get rings with little rails on top that accommodate kind of a boom that comes over the top of your objective and out in front of your day optics. To be used with something like an AN-PVS14. I think badger ordnance has a setup.

Unless ultra high speed coyote hunting at night is what you're doing, I'd just stick with a cool boltgun with day optics. You really can't go wrong with any of the brands you mentioned, but for a precision rifle, IMO you must have a reticle capable of range estimation, and finger adjustable turrets. Again though, all of those optics include those.

Edit: Badger has a thing you can bed into the forearm of the stock that would place the night optics about where it needs to go. Again, just my opinion; way beyond the realm of practicality.

Gen 4 is BS. Military are only using Gen 3 and that is NOT released on the market yet. The USA is so paranoid about NFE (Night Fighting Equipment) falling into the wrong hands, I doubt they will allow the sale of true gen 3 in the forseeable future.

As an active duty infantryman, I'm gonna say that night vision is overrated. People tend to get sucked into greenview, and mounting to a kevlar and trying to get it to fit is just an awful experience.

You sure can buy Gen 3 and 4 equipment. Whether or not you can ship overseas is something I don't know, but I'm gonna bet not.

Combine a monocular with a NAD and it isnt too bad. I usually group 75mm or better (average of 4, 5 shot groups at 100 metres) with my service weapon, with a night aiming device and a monocular in pitch dark, it blows out to 180-200mm, still acceptable for shooting at something you can't see with the naked eye.

He wants a bolt gun that can be used effectively for if/when TSHTF.

Not saying that's the most practical thing to use, but the man wants what he wants and he asked me for input.

Yeah I just recently was upgraded to a PEQ15 from a PEQ2. We just shoot CQB with it. We don't typically engage out to 100 yards, but then again, I guess it'd be moar accurate than blasting away.

Fact of the matter is, I'd just rather have less armor, a moar bare rifle, and concentrate on maneuverability and being generally out of sight (a.k.a. moar effective use of concealment).

I've always wondered if in the process of becoming a imperialistic, tyrannical state, it goes hand in hand with making grunts in their armies be all loaded down with armor and maximized firepower so they just lumber along and shoot at everything that moves.

If that's its intended purpose, he should get a good but standard rifle (Rem 700 PSS, Svg 110 LE, or FN SPR) and a great scope, then spend the rest on ammo/handloading gear. I'd think the ammo would be a much moar worthy investment than night capable optics.

He doesn't want to handload at all.

And money isn't really an issue here.

I really don't think he'd care if the total cost went over $20K.

Trust me, I've said many of these things to him but he is steadfast in his opinion, a heavy barrel bolt rifle in .223 that can be used at night.

And this isn't his only gun, not by a long shot.

Anything you can think he already has a firearms to fill that role (Non Class III).

So what kind of gun is he putting this on? I've always wanted to get a review of the surgeon actions, so if he isn't to far in maybe consider them.
