loaned out my beater 92 mit.eclipse, he has had it for about three weeks, calls today and tells me it shut off on him and wouldnt crank, so i get the car hauler and go over and pick it up, once i get it home i find out the timing belt is broke, i'm not sure but i believe the 1.8 motor used in these cars is a non-interference, does anybody know for sure? be real nice if i didnt have to replace a head

A broken timing belt will not prevent the engine from cranking over. Sounds like you do have an interference engine on your hands. Or at least what is left of one. Might as well pull the head off and check if you already have to do a timing belt. Might end up being better (read: cheaper) to just get a used engine rather than messing with rebuilding it if the valves are bent.

If its a '92 eclipse its probably cheaper getting a new car.

right a broken timing belt will not stop it from turning over, but it will most definatly stop it from starting. already got it fixed, it IS a non-interference motor, pulled it all apart, put the new belt on, runs like a champ again, the only reason i even bothered with fixing it is because it already has a new motor, less than 20k on the rebuild, i bought the car to go back and forth to work because it gets great MPG.

You did say it wouldn't crank in the original post. That is what I was going off of. Glad you got it fixed easily.

lol ok well i guess saying it would not crank is my redneck way of saying it wouldn't run, what i should have said was it spins over but will not run

Must be a Southern thing because I've always understood "crank" to mean to start and run, as in "I tried to start my truck but it wouldn't crank, I think it's the fuel pump."

That, or tim tim is just a retard.

I have always understood "cranking" as the act of turning the engine over under the starters power. If the engine won't fire, then it is turning over or cranking, but there is another problem. Some people just learn things different I guess.

A broken timing belt will not prevent the engine from cranking over.

It will on a older Honda Civic, the Oil pump is driven off the Camshaft & if you turn it over for too long the bottom end will run out of oil & seize up.

Something to remember. About the only thing (except the size of the seat, its like a sofa!) I didn't like about the 'Civic'.
Can't wait for the new ones to come out.

My car wont crank/turn over = the engine will not rotate when the starter is engaged.

My car wont run/start = The car will crank/turn over but will not run on its own power.
