Anyone know how i would go about doing this? College doesn't allow online gaming in the dorms.

Configure the PS3 to use a computer as a proxy, have that computer VPN or SSH (whatever's faster) to outside of the Uni's network and then go.

Or - mac spoof your PS3 to make the network believe it is your PC

Won't matter if the Uni firewalls access to the game servers.

If you mac spoof and it does not work, then maybe they did block the game servers (very unlikely at *most* colleges)

If you have high speed at home, you could set that up to run as your personal proxy server.

Connect your PS3 to run through that to connect to the game servers.

I did this back in high school because *BESS* blocked everything, even certain search engines and all known proxy sites.

Good looks man, but could you explain kinda like step by step how to do this? =\ not to great with this stuff.

Thinking about this further... assuming your PC (or laptop) is running windows... the easiest way would be to change your PC's MAC address to match your PS3's MAC address, and then re-registering your PC with the school if needed (tell them you got a new computer or changed your ethernet adapter).

The simplest way to do change the MAC is to:

1) Look up your PS3's MAC address and write it down MAC = Physical Address
2) Download SIW.exe (System Information for Windows) - google it, its free- to your PC
3) Run SIW, click tools and click the MAC Changer
4) Type in your PS3's MAC address and click change.
5) Re-Register your PC with the school if it does not connect to the internet... if it does connect
........a) Visit a few pages you never have before, just to make sure the browser isn't simply recalling its cache
........b) Unplug the ethernet cord from your PC and put it in the PS3 to see if it works.

--------------------------------------------------------

If the MAC changing does not work you will need to set up an EXTERNAL PC (aka at home) to run as a server.

I'm not going to go into the details here buy you will need XAMPP for windows (the add-ons are unnecessary)

Ok, so i tryed the first idea i changed my comps MAC adress to the same as PS3's and then visited a website. I never had to register my PC with the school in the first place , so i dont really know how that works. I get the PS3 to connect to the media server and everything except it won't connect to the PSN network. I can download update 2.50 and everything but its fucking bullshit it won't connect to PSN network. Any idea why? Also, i did it going straight from the wall. I do have a router.

Can you game online with your PC?

How far do you get with your PS3?
Can you Sign In to the PSN?
What is the error when you try to game online?

Does the PS3's wireless pick up on any networks?

The registering thing has just been my experience - we've always had to do some type of online registration to access the internet.

In your case they are blocking the gaming servers and networks.

You will have to use a proxy server, assuming they are not blocked.
Configure the PS3 to connect to a proxy, and if your school is blocking proxies you will need to set up your own...

to do that refer to my last post

Yes - ish - google proxy servers, try one of those.

If your school blocks known proxy servers you will need to set up your own at home (an hours away) - good thing thanksgiving break is coming soon lol

Ugh..... if you really need to get online with your PS3... Okay, I take it that you have a computer that you can get online to surf the net and such? Well, the easiest way is to just use your computer as kind of like a proxy server. Assuming you use windows (XP) hopefully. Just get a second network card, set up the connections, and then make a connection bridge in windows of both NIC's. Then, you just plug in your PS3 to the second NIC, and away you should go. You can also use this method to cheat in certain games. :D

I have vista... i tryed bridging the connections some other way but it wouldn't work. It was like ethernet from pc to ps3 . pc connected with wireless connection.

If i buy another network card will this be guarenteed to work?

If you're going to bridge them (Not ICS, ICS wont work) I would really suggest using both a wired connection for your PC, and for your PS3. It's not a 100% guarantee, but it SHOULD work.

What do I use instead of ICS? When i tryed with the wireless and wired connection I used ICS .. is this why it wouldn't work? Can i try the wireless and wired with whatever you suggest that isn't ICS?

Before you do anything, find out if you can reach the game servers from your PC.

find out the URL that the PS3 (or any other system for that matter) goes to to connect online and put it in a browser

Chances are if your school blocks the PS3 it blocks the 360 and wii also

Yes this, except don't just use a browser. Use nmap to see what ports are reachable. Give me the server and I'll post what ports are reachable for me.

If it is true that your school doesn't allow on-line gaming systems then this comment it void.

At the dorm rooms i stay in, we have to call our campus residential technologies center and get our room allowed then register the mac address. This may be all you need to do

Ok, i'm back at school. I go to Slippery rock university for whoever was going to check what ports are open. The game i wanna play is socom confrontation for ps3 if that is needed to check ports?

Now, how do i from my comp check what ports are open? Is buying another network card guarenteed to work?

Wait, Slippery Rock University as in Slippery Rock, PA? That's a stone's throw away from me! :o

OK, maybe a little more than a stone's throw, but it's in the same general area of the state.

However, he meant give him the IP or name of a machine inside your school's network and he'd then scan it for open ports (to see what they're blocking).

You could always ask the administrators if they're blocking access to online game networks.

What we're doing is seeing if your school blocks access to the servers that host online games. You have to determine the hostname or IP address of those servers (google will probably do the trick) and then just post that. To scan it, go to insecure.org and download nmap. Read the documentation, and do a good scan. The line I'll probably use is:

nmap -sSUV -T4 -vv -oN gameserverscan.out <game server address goes here>

If we both have the same results, that means that the school isn't doing blocking, and you can just find a way to clone your computer's MAC address or bridge the connection.

If you have different results than I do, it means the school is blocking the server or port. This means that bridging or any of the above fixes will not work, and you'll need to set up a proxy.

Can't he just use a program to monitor his network traffic and see what IP the game tries to connect to?

I'm betting he's going to have to set up a proxy.

Yes, he can do that, but there are a lot of situations where that won't work as well, like if he uses a wall ethernet outlet and it's on a switched network.

If he connects to a wireless net, it'll work great though.

ps3 online doesn't use specific servers for hosting games. each game is hosted on one of the machines trying to join a game. peer to peer hosting.

Dark_Magneto
2008-10-24, 07:44
So it's like Battle.net, eh? Then there's definitely a server that Sony use so people can find players to connect to and the campus is probably blocking access to it.

Try just asking admins nicely/justify reasons for gaming
