Ok you conspiracy nuts. If you want to know a real conspiracy that for real and is not based on flimsy evidence or Mayan calender garbage; it is peak oil. Most people have never even heard of the term, but for many it will define the better part of you life.
The world consumes 86 million barrels of oil a day. Despite massive price increases in crude, that number has not risen since 2005. As oil fields age, their production resembles a bell curve. In the beginning the oil comes out easily, but after a while the production starts declining requiring expensive pumping and extraction techniques to pump out the second half. World oil discoveries peaked in 1964, and have been declining ever since. We are at peak oil, and this has profound implications.
Peak oil is not about running out of oil. Rather, it is the point at time at which oil production has reached a peak, and will likely plateau for years and then begin an irreversible path downward.
Make no mistake about it, we are in the heart of the oil age. The constant exponential growth our economy has demonstrated for almost a century is almost entirely due to oil, and the surplus energy it provides. Since we are at peak oil or close to it, this has profound implications for you and you life.
What does PO mean for you? Well it means that hyperinflation, massive increases in crime, severe social unrest, famine, black markets, martial law, massive die offs and other problems will consume much of your life.
When will all this happen? Well the oil supply is going to remain extremely tight with only around 200mbpd excess capacity until 2011. 2011 oil production will actually decrease, and yes this is factoring in tar sands and biofuels. This means you only have a couple years to prepare for massive full scale SHTF TEOTWAWKI.
Is it really going to be that bad? Well estimated vary, but PO will defiantly will be TEOTWAWKI. Whether or not we have massive full scale SHTF is up for debate, but I'm not taking any chances.

What do a rise in the total amount of barrels of oil consumed per day and a rise in price have to do with each other?

What do a rise in the total amount of barrels of oil consumed per day and a rise in price have to do with each other?Good question. Well massive price increases mean more incentive to get oil out of the ground and out to market. However that hasn't happened and oil production has remained flat since levels seen in 2005. http://www.theoildrum.com/files/Oilwatch_dec_oildrum_1.png

Peak oil is bullshit, of the trillions of dollars a year profit they would be stupid not to research new tecqniques to get at the harder to reach reserves. That and the fact they are finding new ones all the time with better geographical testing.

But if people are too naive to realize its all a scam then prices go up as do profits.

It's called a resource peak, and it's pretty much standard info if you are into economics. With oil, it's already peaked, and we're just going through the bumpy section when the economy suffers and then we simply go into a terminal recession following the oil productions downward curve. Don't worry though, when the economy destabilizes and starts to crash, that's when world security starts to fall apart and world war breaks out. Such a war, starvation, and the diseases that will result from mass death should wipe out enough of the worlds population that we'll probably be able to retrofit what's left to function on sustainable energy sources. Interesting times.

Yes, because drilling up more oil will solve the problem of oil running out in the long run.
