View Full Version : Why does my 07 elantra get crap for mpg?

So im driving my moms car for the next 2 weeks. And I noticed something peculiar about it...
Its fuel economy is nothing as I was led to believe.
it was filled up tuesday. Today its at about half a tank. Yet the trip odometer reads only 118 miles so far. The 07 elentra was like number 1 or 2 for the best fuel economy.
I suppose it could be because I push this car. I hate its power. I have to near floor it to get some *ok* acceleration.
Do I have a leak in the fuel somewhere, or is my pushing the car really slashing the millage I get in half or something?

Either the gas gauge is broken, which is very very unlikely for an 07 car.
Or you are indeed pushing it too much which is very very likely for someone who floors it to get ok acceleration.

I find it hard to believe that a 2.0L with 138hp will need to be pushed hard to get decent acceleration. Sounds like you have an engine problem.

Because it's a Hyundai.
@AP2K, it could be that he's used to good acceleration, and thus would lead him to believe that the Elentra's is crap.
EDIT: It's because the Elantra has a 14 gallon tank, not a 20 like most people are used to.
Because you drive like a retard!
This post is in no way helpful.

Hahahaha, 138? Lawn mowers have more horsepower than that.

My '90 accord has a 14 gallon tank and I get 160 miles to a half tank, doing around town driving.

Im used to driving fords and pontiacs. This is my first foreign car experience. But yeah im starting to think that im just not used to it. I floored it too see the 0-60 capability. 14 seconds.
Do you know how embarrassing it is to try and impress a cute girl driving next to you, when your in a fuckin hyndai and shes in a F-250?
Im ganna refill and take it easy on the gassing and see what kind of millage I get next week. I just hate slow speeds..

^If the 0-60 was ACTUALLY 14 seconds, then you have a moderate/major problem going on with the engine.

Manual or auto?

I dont think I have a problem. Its just a overall weak car. And no its not EXACTLY. I dint have a stop watch so I had to count in my head. Plus to be fair I dint do it on even ground. It was a slightly upward road. but its the only sufficiently straight road within a mile of my house. I suppose I can try at work tomorrow. they have an empty parking lot..
Its a 2007 hyundai elantra auto transmission. I assume its a 2.0. Never really checked.

So your estimate was a complete waste of our time.

You said "try"...
My Fiero has about 110 horsepower and it's got a 0-60 of alot faster than 14 seconds. It was faster than that before I put the new intake on it.
Why does everyone here think any car with less than 300hp is weak as piss?

It's not about power man, it's about power to weight:
IE:
Mazda MX-5
1.05 tons. 2100 pounds. 120bhp.
Power:weight- 0.0514
Hyundai Elentra:
2800 pounds. 110bhp.
Power:weight- 0.03928
Similar power outputs, different weight. Weight always makes the difference.
Something is weak as piss if it weighs a lot for the amount of power it has, not if the engine itself isn't producing a million horsepowazzz.

What if I were to say...
Something with low power, even though it has high power to weight, is going to be slow due to aerodynamic resistance?
Ohhhh, turned your world upside down now, haven't I!?
Anyway, my point is, everyone (ill-informed blanket statement of the year) here seems to think any car that isn't a super car is a slow car.

I meant it as a general saying. Most things with good power:weight ratios aren't going to have bad aerodynamic properties.
Also, my Merceds E430 isn't a supercar, and that's pretty damn fast. At least to me it is...
EDIT: Before you retort, I realize that there are exceptions:
Toyota Land Cruiser V8,
Ford F150 Lightning,
and many others.
But the number of those types of things are nothing compared to the number of cars with good power:weight ratios and good aerodynamic properties

I'm not really having this argument with you mate, I'm just messing with you.
I am aware of the value of power to weight ratios.

You mean kidiots who drive a piece of shit or nothing at all? Or a quite new car they don't appreciate because mummy and daddy bought it for them?

nah its just a little 4banger with no power
the honda fit's 0-60 is between 14-15 seconds, so im thinking its just a little economy car not made for anything anywhere near speed

^ Though I didn't think the fit was that slow, you're talking out the ass. I've driven one of these elantras and it was not as pathetic as I thought it would be (not saying it was special). The 'official' numbers for the elantra are between 8-10 seconds.

Uhh, yeah. I posed it vaguely so no one could be like NO IT IS 8.7s!!1! The 'official' times are different than say, magazine tests are different than independent tests and the auto and manual also vary. For the record, it is generally ~9s.
