View Full Version : Increasing muzzle velocity on a .177 pneumatic pellet gun

I need a gun for some light hunting and extermination services (IE gophers and other things that ruin lawns).
I also need to be able to kill rabbits and crows.
Right now, my gun shoots at 750FPS. It is not satisfactory for most of this. It can kill a crow no problem.
Rabbits and gophers are otherwise.
I can penetrate a squirrel, but not a rabbit.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Wooty sucks at penetrating my AT Field.
What kind of pellets are you using?

If your gun will accept them BB's usually give you more pentration but are less accurate than pellets. Only other thing i can think of is getting some heavier round nose or pointed pellets, they might give you enough momentum to punch through a rabbits skull.

Thanks, I guess I'll start using those now.

Midnight, use either the copperhead copper pellets or the darts with coloured hairs in the tail.
I've killed rather large animals (wascally wabbits, wild dogs, badgers, etc.) with the first. The second, out of my Benjamin Sheridan at close range (10 mts) punched right through my Flak Jacket (9mm Para failed to follow suit :().

I vote biiiig nono on the dart thing. Most darts are really shitty, i mean, i got some of those and i can't even hit a 50 cm in diameter tree from 5 meters with those

lol the suggestions so far have been flat out retarded.
pellets do not kill through penetration, they kill through hydrostatic shock. this is why you should use flat or dome-tipped pellets. though really, you should be aiming for headshots with rabbits... In which case you could be hitting them with a .177 marshmallow for all the difference it makes.

Copperheads are dome- tipped. Again, when hunting anything with pellets aim for the right eye. Seems to work.

Best .177 hunting pellet?
Gamo Magnums
/thread
But, seriously, those.
They should have them at Walmart.
I used to kill a lot of things with my Sheridan 397 and my friend's Crosman 664 and having tried all Gamo's pellets, all RWS's pellets, all of Crosman's pellets, and all of Daisy's pellets, the only one that has been the most uniform and consistant in its effects was the Gamo Magnum.
I also really like Crosman Premiers (in the 1250 count cardboard box) in 10.5 grain for .177, though the 7.9 gr worked well too. I once hit a crow from 90 yards with my Sheridan 397 and a 7.9 gr Premier, didn't kill him but stopped him long enough to rush him with a Crosman .177 revolver :D
In .22 airguns I really like Daisy's generic wadcutter pellet. There was a squirrel climbing down a telephone pole and I shot him in the neck with said pellet from my Sheridan 392. It hit him and he stopped and began to gush blood out of his neck like nothing I've ever seen.
And in my experience rabbits are "softer" than squirrels and pellets penetrate much deeper in rabbit tissue.
Gah, this is making me want to by new seals for my Sheridans.
And, yea, I used to be heavy into airgunning, lol.
EDIT: Lava is a boob.
Aim for the throat!

And who the fuck are you?
1) IIRC 'Hydrostatic Shock" is a myth (been reading Marine Sniper by any chance?), I don't remember the exact reason but i'm sure someone could point you to it. Might of been in one of those FBI wound ballistics sites RL posted at one stage. Basically to achieve it, a projectile has to be moving at speeds WELL above what is presently possible - something crazy like 10,000fps or something.
2) Nothing's going to make jack shit difference if the pellet can't get INSIDE the target. So PENERTATION is very fucking important jack ass.
3) Once again, if the projectile bounces off their head (or skims over it which sometimes even happens with .22's) it's going to do sweet fuck all except make it run away. If what you're saying is correct i should be dead since i've been hit in the head a couple of times with a pellet from an air rifle.
I suggest you read up on something called "Terminal Ballistics" before you go sprouting shit like this agian.
and I still don't get why I was called a boob :(

Also, look into PBA. I think they're bullshit, but they may increase velocity. Never used them so I couldn't speak on if it's true or not. My opinion on them is that they're overpriced "gold plated" shitdrool.

I think he was just playing ;) .
On the pellet subject i used to always used RWS super-dome or super-point, but i've been using EXP pointed pellets the last few years since they're cheaper and i don't notice any difference since i only use it for picking birds off my garden and power lines.

Haha, I was just playing around.
Because you said about aiming for the right eye, while I prefer throat shots.
Either would fuck something's day up though.

You almost hurt my feelings :p.
I've never tried throat shots. But I certainly will try now.:D
.177 is useless for hunting IMO
you need at least a .22 pellet rifle going 800+ FPS

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If I were a boob I wouldn't leave the house.
Additionally, I probably wouldn't have legs, so it'd be impossible anyway.

just out of curiosity OP, is there some reason you are unable to use a .22 LR? I use one for pest controll all the time, and only once have i had someone that took more than one decent shot.
Huge gray squirrel that took 2 shots through the neck into heart/lungs, then another to the head before it stopped running.

^ Too true about the multiple hits.
Me and a friend were shooting a squirrel with CB shorts and all of the hits were good (entering at the shoulder and traveling through the lungs were 3 of the rounds) and it took 5 hits to kill it.
The squirrel was climbing a tree on the 4th shot and was his near the bottom of the ribcage at around 4 yards, the 29gr slug exited along with some intestings and the squirrel continued to climb, wavered, then fell around 50 feet.
Final shot was at the base of the skull from about 3 inches.
Moral of the story,
Squirrels are fucking tough.
or
Use a .30-06 :D

I shot a wallaby once with a .22LR that simply refused to die, only a little one too - maybe 2ft high. First 5 rounds were all put into the upper chest, next 5 were all in the chest, next 4 were scattered because it was moving and rolling, in the end i had to walk up behind it hold it down with my foot and put one into it's head. Dunno WTF it had been snorting but it wasn't stopping.
Also shot a decent sized grey kangeroo (about 5ft tall) once with the .22lr from about 120-130 yards, hit it in the head and it dropped like a stone, walked up grabed it got maybe half way back and the fucker come alive again....that was interesting....the round had skimmed over the skull but still hit hard enough to knock it out.

well, for squirrels I prefer to use a .223, and since I live so far out into the fucking woods there isnt really any danger from the over penetration that occurs when .223 meets squirrel face.

I have some other projects going on right now, so I can't afford a new gun.
I am working on drilling a new barrel that fits .22 rounds that I can just replace my .177 barrel with, but I'm probably not going to do this since the stock internals weren't really meant for that.

I seriously advise against this, as your rifle may not be able to handle the heavier round.

Not to mention it would be next to impossible to drill it out to .22" (~5.7mm) in a perfectly straight line without some high priced tools, any you'd have no rifling so even if you did get it straight you still won't hit much.
I can penetrate a squirrel, but not a rabbit.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What brand and model is your rifle?
What distance did you shoot at, and found out you lacked power?
Are you sure you even hit the rabbit?
If so, where did you hit it?
What pellet did you use (brand and model)?

Tried them in .22, my rifle doesn't like them, they do seem to make on hell of a mess during tests though.

From everyone I've talked to so far, that seems to be the common opinion...

Repeater PCP's are the pickiest of air rifles when it comes to ammo choice. Most people who own such a rifle take the one make that works best and stick with it.
Diametrically opposite would be the break-open.
Put some petroleum based product in the cup of the pellet. WD-40 works well. The fluid will diesel under the pressure adding a fair amount of velocity to the weapon.
This is hard on the gun, but it works.
I also need to be able to kill rabbits and crows.

are you sure its 750FPS? have you run it through a chronoscope recently? because ive killed hundreds of rabbits with my air rifle that barely does 650FPS. so before you go out and buy new springs just try this stuff first
get closer to your target. 80ft-100ft is usually a good range
clean the barrel and oil the air piston.
recalibrate your scope.
try all that first and see if it helps

You should be able to kill rabbits with that. You will probably have to run up and finish them off unless you manage a head shot. Sometimes they might be able to run away after they have been hit depending on where you get them. If you can get a .22 proper gun then go for it. Or get a shotgun.
