I've seen a couple reverences to movies that are based on games, and I would like to know something. Are you judging the movies on how well they mirror the game, or on if it is a good movie on its own?

I personally like to watch them as movies rather than as live action video games. No movie will ever live up to the game (as long as the game is good) if it is viewed with the expectation of being an exact mirror of the character/plot/style etc...

Now, I'm not trying to say that directors should rape the idea completely (Alone in the Dark ) but when making a movie it is my thought that the director and producer want to target a larger audience than the people who have already played the games. So whats wrong with a little deviation now and then? (as long as it is a good movie in its own right)

Fact: there has never been a good movie based on a video game, and there never will be.

That is because the games are based on the videogames in name only.

Except maybe postal, that followed sorta alright.

now I'm sure this is regarding the recent release of the Max Payne film, and basically what I have to say is: as a movie...it was decent (for once!). as a video game to movie adaption, it was the best it could have been by means of Hollywood; and that's saying alot. really. the best thing about it is that it actually managed to capture the feel of the game (judgeing you didn't use 'bullet-time' non-stop). that really meant alot to me, because the style and feel of Max Payne is really special to me. it's dreamy, noir feel and narration had a great impact on the...narration...that goes on my head...while observing things...and going about my daily life... -- as well as my writing style (as I am a writer, myself). both narration wise, and the feel of the universes in which my writings take place in.

but by now, anymore -- I could really give a shit less whether a video game to film adaption was "Great" stand-alone as a film; just as long as I had a good time with it. and basically therefore, as long as it isn't Uwe Boll. so far, I'd say Max Payne was the only one to really do that for me, so far.

so good enough. that's one down, so far. next up: Metal Gear Solid.

Would you say that Max Payne is worth a watch? Thinking of going and seeing it at the moment.

For some reason I had a fantasy that the command and conquer game series would be made into a TV series. And the original halflife might make a good science-fiction/horror movie.

I guess it was a good adaptation from game to movie, at least according to my friend who remembers the Max Payne story. I played it too, but god that was years ago and the only thing I could remember is how I couldn't beat the last fucking thing with the helipad on the roof. But uhhh...the movie didn't do much for me as a movie. Maybe I just don't like Mark Wahlberg. But yeah, I didn't really like Max Payne. I give it a 2/5.

Nightmare creatures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightmare_Creatures) in a sort of Van Helsing style (except good) and Medievil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medievil) as an animated pixar kind of movie, like corpse bride (not that I've seen it).

Yeah, but you don't like shit.

OP: I always consider movies on their own merit. I don't like when they absolutely butcher the source material (particularly in favor of something stupid, ie. Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2 and 3), but if the movie is good, then I don't really care much. For example, Kubrick basically raped and pillaged Stephen King's book The Shining, but it was forgiveable since the movie was so awesome.

I always expect minor changes, but I think that's a necessity when you change to a different medium. It's something that comic-book fanboy retards never seen to understand...if a movie makes various changes, it gets flamed, and if it doesn't make certain changes, it often sucks. Hulk is my favorite example. Ang Lee adapted the Hulk story into something intelligent, emotional, and real (as far as the human characters), got flamed for it, and then based on fanboy-retard demands, they trashed Lee's potential franchise and went for generic, forgettable action instead.

Or look at No Country for Old Men. Apparently they adapted it almost directly from the book, and I think that's why the main character wasn't apparent, and why the ending seemed so disappointing. In book format, I could see it working quite well, but a film's structure is quite different from a novel's.

That's a good mother fucking game. I don't think the movie will come close to the game at all.

Jake Gyllenhaal Is playing in it! Oh no!

Seeing Metal Gear as a movie would be a nightmare. I'm not looking forward to that.

I compare the movies to the source material, but if the movie is good, differences can be forgiven. After all, having something new for the movie keeps the material fresh. Silent Hill deviated from the games in some key ways, but was still enjoyable enough.

But, sadly, SOME of the people making the movies do think it's completely fine to make a movie that is almost nothing like the source material or is just a shitty movie. Anything that Uwe Boll is involved in falls under that category. Fucking Bloodrayne...

Look up a picture of him from the shooting of that movie, he looks pretty convincing.
