1. I don't have to put up with cellphones and idle chatter. This is probably my number one pet peeve at the multiplex, where everyone ignores their phones and fellow theater-goers until the feature flick starts.
2. I can watch any movie I'd like to any time of the day or night. Even better, without unnecessary previews or advertisements. Double, triple, and quadruple features are common at my place, with such combinations as (a) Clerks and Clerks II (b) Star Wars Episodes 4, 5, and 6 (c) Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Land of the Dead.
Inviting over some very funny friends and MST3K'ing B-movies once a month leads to a lot of laughs as well! Dolly Dearest is great for this.
Expanding on this thought, I get to watch films with the commentary track on and it makes for a great experience. At times you really do get the feeling you're in the same room as those talking, watching the same film and listening to their conversation.
3. Snacks galore, and they don't cost nearly as much as the commercial theater. Here's a thread I made on how to make movie popcorn (https://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?p=10445001). Free soda refills. As much candy as you care to bring. TV dinners also take on a whole new meaning.
Perhaps at some point in the future I'll even go so far as to purchase a soda fountain (http://www.boneville.net/soda/) and popcorn machine (http://www.snappypopcorn.com/productcart/pc/viewcategories.asp?idCategory=38). Draft beer is also a possibility!
4. I don't find myself wandering down dark theater aisles stepping on spilled soda and popcorn that never gets cleaned up.
5. My preferred seat is always available, and in just the right position. Home theater setups can easily be tweaked to your seat's position so that the full experience is every bit you hoped it'd be.
6. If I'd like to, I can watch movies by myself. If I want the few available seats occupied by my best friends, that's no big deal, I just give 'em a call and say, "Hey dude! You wanna watch Enemy at the Gates? Yeah!? Okay, see you in a bit!"
7. I can hit the pause button, take a leak, and return to the film at hand.
Also, I cry myself to sleep at night because this opera themed theater is not mine:

It's apparently 21 ft. wide, 29 ft. deep, 16 ft. tall at front and 11 ft. tall at rear. Amazing, just amazing.
