i dont understand them, are they supposed to be funny? to me it seems like the fact they have a musical number in the middle of the episode is supposed to be funny, but not the song itself.

family guy is one of my favorite shows, but the musical numbers are quite annoying.
i think the only funny one was the one about the FCC

They have them to eat up time in the episodes.
It's hard to come up with enough material for 23 minutes.
Thats why they have all the repetition jokes.
I don't mind them too much. They're usually not very funny, just entertaining.

fuck the musicals in family guy, seriously
When has Family Guy ever been funny?
This.
I hate family guy, the lack of humor in it causes the producers to put repetetive and shitty scene in. Anyone watched that episode when Peter drops a dead frog on the floor and tries to pick it up with a shoe box lid for like 5 minutes? what the fuck?

this (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=gKGHlOnRULk&feature=related) is the reason i hate family guy
It's obvious why they have them, Seth McFarlane thinks he's a fucking great singer and wants to work it into every episode at all costs. Yeah, you're a pretty good singer, we get it.
But I did like a couple of them. The one at the Patriots game and the one Brian sang for the old lady were both good.

That one I know for sure isn't an original from Family Guy, it's "Shipoopi" from the play "Anything Goes." Since some of that show's references are so obscure I don't know if any of those other songs are rip-offs or covers of real musical numbers...but the version of shipoopi in the episode IS a full, complete rendition...Fucking annoying with that like one-minute interlude.
On a tangent, however: repetitive as it was, the "Surfin' Bird" episode from the week before last I think is one for all time. They even managed to lay off the repitition for nearly half an episode to introduce Jesus and his whole side plot, even after ass-pounding that song into submission. The funniest one I've seen since probably season 2 or 3 when the formula started to get old to me. Buh Buh Buh Bird Bird Bird, the Bird is the Word....

Yeah, they're pretty much all parodies in some way. I'm not too big on the musical numbers in alot of shows, but my favourite has gotta be the one from the episode where Peter finds out he's retarded that parodies "Bye Bye Birdie", had that fucker stuck in my head for weeks.

Okay good to know.. I assumed it wasn't an original but wasn't sure what it was. I think that particular scene did annoy a lot of people but I found it fucking hilarious and brilliant.

Maybe, but the episode was awful and I don't usually think they are. As average as Family Guy is, they usually don't have terrible full episodes like that one.

If you mean in terms of actual content, you're sure right. I'm just saying that normally I hate all the repetitive jokes, but for some reason I actually enjoyed this particular one...I think it might be because it's actually the song that's being repetitive, and not some stupid idea from the writers. In fact, "Surfin' Bird" is 2:30 of the same thing over and over. Over the course of the episode I'll bet Peter actually sings the song for a total of around 3 or 4 minutes (don't quote me on that).
I don't think "intelligent" and "Family Guy" belong in the same sentence, but they might actually have been poking fun at themselves for being so repetitive by focusing one episode on a song so FUCKING repetitive as "Surfin' Bird."
Are they smart enough to construct an episode like that? .......nahhh, you're right. They're not.

This. Did you know that he is making a fucking spin off with Cleveland? Jesus Christ! This man gets 3 fucking shows at the same time and I'll never get to see another Arrested Development episode.:mad::mad::mad:

That "You've got AIDS" song was pretty funny. The rest of the songs are shitty though.

I find the show unwatchable, I don't think I ever managed to sit through a whole episode, I'd rather watch the same SP or Simpsons episodes over and over than subject myself to that idiotic crap.

I find it funny but I wish they'd spend more time making fewer episodes with a higher frequency and caliber of jokes.
South Park hit the nail on the head too with their parody of it.
I think the Family Guy jokes which are plot based are a lot funnier than the disjointed THATS ALMOST AS BAD AS THE TIME WHEN inserts, which feel really disjointed. It's not a fucking sketch show.

Bingo. Seth seems to have quite an ego.
And yes, Family Guy isn't terribly creative and it's very repetitive, but quite frankly, I don't give a shit. It makes me laugh, therefore I like it's bonerific -- although that Surfin' Bird episode made me want to throw rocks at my TV...
And what's all this about a Cleveland spin-off? I think that's going a little too far...
