The guy is just never mentioned again after Jesus grows up. What the fuck happened to the guy and who the hell was he?

To my knowledge, it's an open thread of history.

EDIT: This is what I originally wrote: "According to a History channel special I saw, other than the Bible, there is almost no historical account of the mans life. The Historians of that time that do mention him (which are very few) only do so in passing and say nothing of miracles or divinity. This leads some people to question if he ever existed at all."

After I posted I reread the title and saw it was Joseph not Jesus.

I have no idea what happened to him, he wasn't mentioned in the special. However, being that there are almost no historical accounts of his son, I would have to say that it is equally likely that Joseph is a fabrication as well.

I think it's foolish to say that Jesus likely did not exist. His divinity is another matter but his existence seems likely. You have Christians after he was supposed to have lived. Why are there Christians if there is no Christ? They had to have based their faith on someone and since there were Christians right after the period of Christ's supposed life, it seems more like than not that he was probably a real person, divine or not.

From what I understand, Yeshua Ben Yosef(the real Jesus) was from a family of Jewish rabbis, so it is likely that Joseph was just a Rabbi.

Since what we are told about Yeshua's life has been so diluted and bastardized I am not surprised that Joseph is only remembered as a name.

The bible is figurative, not literal.

Parts of the Bible are esoteric texts, and require esoteric knowledge to understand anything beyond the exoteric stories in them, Some parts are real history, and the rest is bullshit.

The Bible in english is almost entirely a bastardization just because of the fact that it was translated. This isnt to say that the words are translated wrong, but that words had so much more meaning, especially in Hebrew.

So please do not take the Bible as literal, and also dont dismiss it as bullshit.

I'm surprised there isn't more fanfic about one-hit Bible characters, like what became of Joseph the carpenter (maybe he divorced Mary and set up a nice little shop in Bethlehem, specializing in manger repair?).

For that matter, what's the backstory on Uzzah the ox-cart driver? You know, the guy who was struck dead because he touched the Ark of the Covenant to keep it from falling off the cart? What a raw deal. I just looked him up, and it turns out that he had a brother named Ahio, who had just bought that cart from their father. The story possibilities are endless: Ahio returns home with his slain brother on the cart. He blames his father for shoddy workmanship, and vows vengeance for his brother. Classic!

How could there have been believers in Zues, Hercules, Thor, Odin, Aphrodite, and the rest of the gang if these people and their stories are not true, if they did not exist?

Christ isn't like Zeus or Thor or any of those other gods. Christ is a cult based around a person in a comparatively recent time. A better comparison to him would be someone like the Roman emperor Augustus (deified as he was). The other divinities are based on old pagan spirituality. It's not really a comparable thing.

apocryphal books might be a start. i believe some of them talk about him in more detail.

Jesus was a real person. Later, pagan ideas were attributed to him by the apostle Paul in order to convert pagans.

Meh, say what you want but that one movie, what was it Zietgeist?, brought up interesting points in the 1st part.

Back then, it could have been a continent wide version of telephone, where a simple story of some guy helping out some bitch who had dust in her eye, got turned into a story of how a miracle worker healed a lady.

I heard that Joseph of Nazareth travelled to England and planted some kind of tree in Avalon (which is now Glastonbury). I live in this region so I have read snippets of information regarding this at the tourist board. However, the Glastonbury Tourist Information Centre is probably not the place to go for historical accuracy.

Ben? It's YAHshua, not Yeshua. Yah = Elohim = God.

Im pretty sure that Joseph was dead while Christ was growing up. Than I heard something else that Joseph made the Cross that Christ was Crucified on. I think its pretty relevent. Even trying to think of what Joseph could represent in the story it only seems like the Protector if anything. Otherwise I am really unsure. But Joseph is my middle name... lol

I think you are thinking of Joseph of Aramathea.
