View Full Version : Your firearms specialty

We haven't had any good broad firearms discussion recently, so let's have one.
It occurs to me that many of our regulars have particular areas of specialty in terms of firearms. Several regulars have been experimenting with suppressors. I know several guys are into long range shooting.
My interest has primarily been in military weapons, both surplus and otherwise, but these days I'm primarily concerned with 'assault rifles' - since they're all semi's designed for civilian consumption I'll skip the liberal B.S. and call them semi-automatic intermediate battle rifles. I think everyone should have a least one in their arsenal, and or in my case, as many as one can afford. And plenty of mags and ammo. These types of rifles seem to me to be the most practical of any firearms for any type of general use. They're particularly suitable for hunting, home/homeland defense, zombies, target shooting, plinking, and collecting. The only thing they aren't good at is defending themselves from gun-grabbing liberals. :(
So let's hear from all the regulars and see who's into what and why. I know most people have a little of everything but all of us probably has at least one particular class of weapon that really gets our motor running.

I like shooting at long range or cutting one hole groups at closer ranges, so anything with a heavy barrel is attractive to me.
Would probably be a different story if i could own semi-autos though. IPSC is something i would like to get into it's just a matter of wading through torrents of bullshit and having the money.

This is a little off topic, but is there anybody in Australia who is actually trying to improve gun rights? Any organizations that get anything done?

The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) are the main ones, they try to stop some of the retarded bans but don't seem to have much luck. We have the NRAA too but i never hear anything about them. I doubt the laws will ever improve, SSAA just slows down the inevitable.

I do love me some long range shooting, my PR is a 604yd kill on a prairie dog. The only reason I like shooting little groups at closer ranges is that its a necessary evil of tuning for long range shooting. I love shooting of just about any sort and plan on owning another AR in the VERY near future(before the election), hopefully another AK also. Lately my passion has been bowhunting, I got into it not knowing whether I would really like it or not but I am officially hooked. Its exciting but very frustrating too. I have had 8 deer close enough (between 15 and 30yds) that I would have absolutely blitzed them with my shotgun, but have yet to take a poke at one with my bow. Hopefully it will come together this weekend.

Your firearms specialty.
Does increasing my credit card debt with firearm(s) purchases count?
In all seriousness...
Short range pistol (IDPA/IPSC).
Intermediate to short range rifle (AR/AK).
Practical tactical type of stuff -- what I carry on my person at all times.

I'm glad I don't have any credit cards. Every month or so I stumble across something I absolutely must have, but normally my lack of money prevents me from buying it. If I had credit at my disposal I shudder to think what might happen.
My specialities:
Collectible guns
Automatic Weapons
Suppressors
WWII weapons and militaria, specifically, German Weapons.
Lugers are my absolute favourite. I don't think there is a Luger I wouldn't buy.

I don't really have a specialty, I just like weapons. If I had to nail one down through, probably AR-15s having assembled mine from parts and knowing it in and out.

I like to think I know more than average about fighting shotguns as well.

I'm particularly fond of military surplus guns, especially the semi-auto variety. But alas, I am a poor college student, and I can only dream. I have an sks, would love to get a tokarev. But that would leave me a suspicious lack of American guns....I'd have to pick up a garand and an m1 carbine too.... *sigh* Someday, someday.

Three round trip airline tickets.
-and-
About $400.00 in prepaid visa gift cards.
From using my bank of america rewards card for firearm and firearm accessory purchases.
Lately I have only been buying firearms private party considering all the local gun stores have jumped in price.

I can't recall the last time I even fired a gun, but I carry one regularly.
Mostly, I buy'em cheap, gloat over them for a while, and sell them for whatever the market will bear.

I've done some long range precision.
But my inherent talent is with pistols.
I don't do shotguns.
I've recently become a firearms owner but have held a long-time interest in such. I generally enjoy two areas concerning guns, namely history and practicality.
Concerning the previous I own at the moment only a Mosin-Nagant, though I plan on acquiring an SKS soon, and perhaps, someday, a K98 Mauser, Tokarev SVT-40, and M1 Garand. I have many others on my wish list. :D
Then there's the practicality bit, namely for hunting and sport shooting. At the moment I own only a Ruger 10/22, though at some point in the future I'll likely purchase a 12 ga. shotgun.
Then there's the fascination with sniping and long-range shooting. My magnum-opus goal is to be able to hit a paper plate sized target at 500 yds 80% of the time.

Glocks are pretty much an extension of my body at this point.
I'm also getting pretty good at ≥300 yard shooting, whatever you'd call that. I'm looking to get a decent bolt gun next month, since the rifles I have now are woefully inadequate for decent groupings.

well, there are a few political parties that do want to reverse, or at least dampen the effect of firearms laws.
the most well known of these parties is the Shooter's party, which was originally for the right to gun ownership, but is now supportive of all lifestyles. if im not mistaken there are 2 senators in New South Wales ( a state) from this party
we have the Liberty and Democracy party, which is pretty much the libertarian party, and the one that i vote for. though i dont think they have any representatives
one of the larger parties, the National party, is pro-gun. the thing is, they formed a coalition with the Liberal party (which is ironically, pretty conservative) who is anti-gun.
but the main issue is the people dont have the issue of gun ownership in their minds.
edit: btw, theres a good quick introduction to australian political parties here

theres a short quiz somewhere too to find out where you lie

Just about any factory varmint rifle will accomplish this. Most hunting rifles will too. Unless the wind is horrid hitting a paper plate at 500yds is easy. I use my 16" steel plate at 500yds to make sure I am clicked in and for checking the wind.
The 6" steel plate at 500yds is a more like a challenge and not even that much if the wind is calm.
You should make the trip up to Lima one of these days and I'll let you shoot at 500yds. But once you do you'll be hooked.

As far as mowing crap down, Im pretty well rounded. The only guns I dont play with regularly are shotguns, and I really dont care because they are rather useless.
Im not much of a gunsmith though, I can do drop in parts. Im learning to do bed stocks, and Ive been tinkering with my 1911s a lot. Im getting pretty damn good with a 1911. I finally fitted a barrel to my desert warrior that was more accurate than stock.

My main specialty is M-16/M4, and M249, being that I use them for the army I know a LOT about those two. As far as my personal collection and specialty is assault rifle type weapons and old military surplus rifles. I know little about pistols and almost nothing about shot guns.

I'll have to pick out a calendar day in the spring for just that activity! :D
I am qualified to carry and use The M-4, M-16A4, M-240, M-249, M-203, And last but not least my fav weapon to shoot, The Mark-19. And the .50 cal, but I'm not sure the nomenclature of it at this moment.

Ma Deuce. Another Browning classic.
Ma Deuce. Another Browning classic.
A gun which will, in all probability, reach its 100th year still in service with its original contractor.
A record, I suspect, unmatched by any other weapon.

Interestingly enough I was watching a television program the other day that essentially said the B-52 Stratofortress will likely be in use for one hundred years, for which that mile marker will be reached in 2055. As of the moment it's planned to stay in service until 2040.
The only weapon to come close to the Browning would be, in my guess, the Mosin-Nagant, though it obviously hasn't been in production for decades nor in official use since 1998, however it's commonly used by insurgents in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Chechnya.

Id like to see you carry the Mk19. Yea. The 107 is cool, but the m2 is a piece of crap.
Thats cool that you are qualified to carry and use all those guns. Sounds like an uber cool job.

Sounds good I'll have to get my BIL over too, he loves to ring the steel at longer ranges.
We built a new house next to the old one and I think I can now get 600yds, so that would be even better.

The Lee Enfield passed 100 years of service IIRC, and may still be in use in that .308 sniper config that i can't remember the name of ATM.
