View Full Version : Looking into an AR 15
Kit or otherwise, can anyone tell me their opinion of the best deals for an AR-15. A friend told me to buy Rock River arms but I would like a second opinion. Would like to know the best gun dealers to buy from as well.
I'd like 1 in. groups an nice reliability. Budget is under $1,000.

Don't derail threads.
Sorry, OP. I don't give away my special source on kits, but you could easily build for $500. And I'm not talking Delton or similar.

Sure, after all, the .338 Lapua is based on that cartridge.
Go with a Rock River. Best buy for the money, your friend is right.
Kit building is a educational and worthwhile experience though too.

And why not? It's not like they are rare or illegal or something. What makes your source so special? Your choice though, I just don't understand why.
Anyway, I own a Rock River and can speak to their quality. You can't go wrong with a Rock River. Though they aren't the only high quality brand I do think they are my favorite. Only problems I have ever had I am pretty sure were related to firing steel cased ammunition before firing brass cased ammunition without cleaning the chamber and/or slightly overpressured ammunition. This could cause a problem in any firearm as the steel case doesn't expand against the chamer and allows the gases to leave deposits between the chamber and the case, the brass case(because brass is softer) will expand up against the chamber walls(and any gunk left from the dirty wolf steel cased ammo) and if there is too much gunk will fail to extract.

Special surplus order lowered their prices. I'm looking out for my personal friends offline first.

Ah, now I understand. And yeah, I'd want to make sure my friends got hooked up first, nothing wrong with that. I don't really have any gun-nut personal friends though(though some have some interest in it), I need to work on that.

DPMS has always been pleasing to me for the dollar. I own one and my freind has a varmint model. Mine is the carbine, with the carry handle (I don't know why I didn't geth the flat-top, I have always liked the carry handle).
It was $600 new, with two mags. I would have to admit it is the most handy and comfortable little weapon I own, and it has done well in the cold here surprisingly. Plenty of yotes taken with the little beast. :D

I have a kit upper from Mand A on a dpms that I paid 600$ for and it hasnt failed me yet after 2000 rds. i have ran the thing completely dry it it keeps on rolling out the casings. Buying the kit allowed me to affor a optic for the rifle so but I bought a "copy" of an aimpoint made by burris.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w148/rp1111_2007/IMG_0014.jpg
it has a tapco m4 stock on it now though which I salvaged from a mini14 tapco stock.
The kits from model1sales and M and A can be hit and miss in quality.
goto ar15.com and look in the industry section. They have plenty of kit supplier.

I heard dpms is inaccurate... is this true?

Probably not. Most of the manufacturers use the same barrel blanks so unless you're getting a special twist rate barrel or barrel profile, there is probably not going to be much discernable difference between most of them. Stuff like trigger pull, free floated handguards and optics will make a difference though.

Well the lower is only dpms so it doesn't really make a difference. But It almost groups as well as my target rifle that has a bull barrel. And groups are on par with my friend factory bushmaster m4. it is also on par with the specified moa.
both of them need replacment match triggers. Right now i do not have 300-600 dollars to drop on 2 new triggers though.

Why do you want an AR-15? I have shot thousands of rounds out of them and M-4's, and I truly belive it's a shitty weapon system. Jams all the time, lot's of double feeds, and all and all a very cheap feeling rifle.

Most of those problems are due to mags. But you're absolutely right, ARs are finnicky compared to some other weapons. They're also some of the most accurate semi-autos out there today though.

I mean, I'm not hating on them. I like my M-4, but I would never buy one. Well maybe for shooting small animals back home but for the price I'd much rather have a really nice .22. The rifle just seems very cheap and like it could have been built better. The one I carry is made by colt for the U.S. army. shitty. But I do have a cool 500 doller shurefire on it with the IR filter. Very useful.

dude. I have also shot thousands rounds out of my car15 and even ran it completely DRY and never once had a jam, double feed, failure to fire, failure to eject,or failure to feed. i used a 13$ alimunum usgimag(green follower) for the most part.
So you might have a shitty weapon(or mags) but they all are not.
This is a MandA.com build on a dpms lower. The rifle itself was ~650$. so sorry your expensive colt sucks.

I diden't pay for it. It is my rifle the army has issued me. I usually douse mine with CLP before going out on missions.

You might overlubricate it, which leads to it gunking up.

Here is a good article about how to keep an AR/M4/M16 running tip-top:
http://www.ar15.com/content/swat/keepitrunning.pdf
Key points are, lubricate critical areas, clean regularly, use quality mags and ammo and you won't have any issues.
I prefer the AK platform since you don't have to worry about a single one of those things and it will generally still work. Naturally I do all of those things, but knowing that I don't have to is always good.

Used a little bit. The andonization on the out side has not been scratched off to bad. But yeah, I have old mags that need replacing. But getting 14 brand new mags when they have tac boxes full of them will be hard. The bullets...hmmm I have no idea who makes them. If I have a problem while shooting I just apply SPORTS and it usually works. If it's that bad I just drop the mag clear the chamber and slap a new mag in.

Well obviously that is a mag issue then. if you don't want to buy new magazines or get new "free" mags then get new followers.springs, and floorplates. and replace the olds ones. This is ot the rifle it is the mags and it can easily be fixed. If that doesn't fix it your rifle has some serious issues.
I'll go to our supply room and look into that. I think sence everyone has old mags nobody really knows what it's like to shoot an M-4 or a M-16A4 with good mags.

now i dont put my ar through as much abuse as you guys would. But that doesn;t really matter. if you cant find a brandnew mag to try just order one from tapco for 13$. They proabably will discount it since you ar military. Get one of those and test it, if it is still jamming after a brand new mag is used then the rifle may have issues. Also i have heard good things about the magpul mags, followers, springs, and floorplates. Seriously though if its your life, what is 100$ on new mags to you?
now it is good to through a old mag in there randomly that jams when training because that will get you in a good habit of clearing jams or what you called"sports" which is good to know how to do in those extra dirty battles.
SPORTS: Slap the mag. Pull the cocking lever. Observe the chamber. Release the cocking lever. Tap the forward assist. Squeeze the trigger. The first letter of the first word in each step equals the word SPORTS. Works well but if there is a prob lem I usually know what steps to skip to fix the problem. But if all fails I just drop the mag, slap a new one in and start pulling the trigger.

If its M855 62 grain ball, its gonna be from the Lake City ammunition plant, which is owned and operated by Alliant Techsystems, or better known by their stock ticker: ATK.

I cant believe they dont teach you the parts of your rifle. It is actually called the charging handle on the m4 ,m16, and ar 15.I suppose it doesnt relly matter tho.
i actually just meant it is good to have a few bag mags in there so you practice clearing jams. So you can practice immdiate action(tap rack bang), Remedial action(atually checking the rifle).
i actually like this guys method:

He is pretty faast.
if you are anything like this guys imidiate and remedial action you are going to be one dead puppy:

lulz.
I just want a rifle that is semi auto, lighter and more accurate than my AK. I'll probably buy a RRA kit upper and a shitty cast lower since the lower isn't important. The most I'll be out of is the $50 spent on the shitty lower. :p
If i don't like what I have I'll buy this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_F2000).

Just stick with the machined lower they are not very expensive/ I paid 120 for my dpms stripped lower.
If you dont buy and upper kit n stripped lower you may as well just buy a complete rifle/ If you get a upper and coplete lower it will be close to regular price.

I think I am going to go with a Stag Arms stripped lower and build it as I go.
I am going to stay with 5.56x45 not .308.
I will be keeping an eye on this thread because I too want to know more about the gun and the options available for it.
It will be cheaper to build yourself and save the rest of that 1000 for magazine and ammo.

the .308 version is much more pricey to build and is called an AR10. it could be anywhere froom 550(cheapest)-1000 to build the rifle depending if you want to buy a name brand upper.

If you cant shell out more than $600 for your rifle, than stay away from ARs. Just because cheapguns.com has lowers and uppers for 50 bucks shipped dosent mean they will shot with a damn or last.
.308s arent really that much more expensive, its the ammo and mags that are pricey.

That is untrue. My cheap ar 15 works fine and is a testament to cheap ar15s being decent. You just have to do your research and find the best kit distributor for the money
