I think there are two points to consider one is that if your current school isn't providing you any extra advantage over a closer cheaper school it makes sense to go to the cheaper one.

The second one is, you shouldn't be making this decision rashly. Sooner than you think you'll forge some new groove to your routines and it won't matter your exgirlfriend is going to the same school.

Maybe you should also conider if heading back home is going to be a good move (supposing this is something you concern yourself with), or is it going to lock you down in your local area, limit your career aspirations.

I was sort of in the same position as you...

I spent my first two years at a large state school, partying/drinking/doing drugs/not doing my work and ending up with a 2.5 gpa. At some point I had a change of heart and transferred to an EXTREMELY small private college near where I grew up.

I don't live at home(my rents moved south a while back), and I live by myself and commute to school.

As far as my social life...its pretty much next to nothing except for Thursday-Saturday, with the occasional weekday bar outing. The commuter students tend to stick together with the people they hung out with since freshman year, and most of the on campus students do the same. In the two years since I've been here I've made probably 3-4 friends which I hang out/talk to regularly.

Academically I am doing alot better. Although the reputation of the school isn't as good as the last school I was at, it certainly hasn't taken away any opportunities from me.

Sometimes I look back and regret transferring...most of my friends from my old school hate me and refuse to talk to me. I sometimes get depressed because I feel lonely and hate myself for it. However, that stems from things I won't go into here since that has nothing with this thread.

That being said, I'm glad I transferred. I'm healthy, doing better in school, and most important HAPPY (95% of the time). I'm focused on my education and en route to graduate next summer (just over 4 years) with two degrees. I have good friends, my teachers are great, they not only take time out of their day to learn about me and help me out, but also will write me great letters of recommendation and have been helping me get a job for when I graduate.

And forget about the ratings. That shit doesn't mean anything in the long run. And as much as you think you have "lost" you haven't. You realized your mistakes and are trying to better yourself. For me it came down to; if I stay here will I become a better person? At my first university that answer was no.

Give it some time and get some distance from current events before you make a decision.

That being said, sometimes it's good to remove yourself from a bad environment.

whocares, I completely understand your situation because that was my first two years at college. I made friends with people who had no real priorities other than drinking and partying and getting laid. Those are all great. But shouldn't be life goals and are not worth tens of thousands of dollars per year in debt (for me at least, I'm talking private school.). When I realized the scholarship that was making it possible for me to stay at school would be rescinded if I stayed on that path, I fucking righted myself and buckled down. Thought about transferring but really enjoyed the academics. So here I am now, junior, spend all my time studying, in the library. Unfortunately I live with 3 other dudes who really haven't moved on from the initial shock of coming to college and do not much with their lives. Oh well, they're my friends; I just don't hang with them as much as I prefer raising my GPA and learning and staying relatively healthy while only drinking one night a week if that. Kind of lame but way tamer and I feel better.

Anyways, don't know if that helped, just saying, you're not alone in your situation and I know what you're going through. I decided not to transfer but just buckled down instead. Good luck with your decision and don't stress too much, I'd be deliberate about the decision to switch but in the end you gotta do what's right for yourself.

Yeah don't worry you're not the only one in a depressing college situation. I love the college that I go to academic-wise, but I feel like 90% of the people here haven't matured past 15. Just try to find the good people that aren't shitheads and hang out with them. Don't worry about what other people think, just be yourself and concentrate on your studies. If its really the money issue that's making you considering transferring, then go to the financial aid office at your school and see what you can do.

I'd transfer. Ohio State undergrad isn't that good anyways. The only thing you'd be losing are "connections" and a name on your degree that will only be worthwhile in Ohio.

One thing holding me back is the study abroad opportunities here. I'm taking Russian language classes, something that is not offered where I'd be transferring (CSU, napoleon) and I'd kind of like to study abroad for a summer or quarter in Russia. But that's assuming I made it through the study abroad application process even.

No, apparently simple insults are better for this forum than content.

edit: It would appear a few threads here are like that because someone had taken over bangbangsilverhammer's account? Heh, I wonder how that is related to HB being deleted.

Heh, napoleon just thought I'd ask why you think it's not that good. I mean, yeah I'm comparing state schools here, but I never really thought of OSU as being deficient or anything. As for the name on my degree...I plan to go to law school anyway, and my understanding is if you have a law degree, nobody is going to give two shits about your undergrad one.

But anyway, I got accepted to Cleveland State (where I am thinking about transferring), which is no surprise. But now I've got to decide within the next couple of weeks. I told the girl that broke up with me about my idea and she looks at it as me quitting, giving up on making friends here and moving back home to a place I don't even like. Maybe there's some truth in that, but the money thing is also a major concern of mine. I'm frugal in everything, why not college? Heh, she also said if I were to transfer, then everything I've spent up until now would be a huge waste of money, because I could've just gone to the cheaper place and lived at home from the beginning...But I didn't know I would ever be considering that! When I was graduating high school, I was anxious to move out of the house and go to a big school. In retrospect, I don't know why. I think a smaller one would much better suit my personality.

Then you should definitely transfer and save as much money as you can if you want to do law school(where school rankings do matter).

My opinions on Ohio State's rankings only concern their undergrad. Ohio State's grad schools and professional schools are great. Great professors, facilities, and programs. However, their undergrad programs aren't anything special. An Ohio State undergrad degree just isn't prestigious anywhere except Ohio.

The name on the undergrad degree really isn't that important when applying for grad/professional schools anyways.

Personal interviews and research are way more important since pretty much everyone will have good grades. Test scores(especially for Law School) are also a ton more important than where you did your undergrad.

^ Yeah that's what I was thinking too, about money. Law school is ridiculously expensive even for an instate public school. God, fuck this system. Socialize the sonofabitch.
