Quick question about telnet (don't berate me please) but I was a little bored today so I started playing around with telnet. I was trying to find out some more info about it, test it out, etc. But when I went to telnet to an IP address that I have I got a message that stated:
"You are about to send your password information to a remote computer in Internet zone. This might not be safe. Do you want to send anyway(y/n)?"
So I'm wondering if my info will be sent to this computer like the message says and if the other computer will receive a message/notification of some kind saying that computer such and such is attempting to connect to your computer blah blah?
Just concerned with this activity being illegal and all. Thanks!:D

Yes this activity is illegal. You tried to connect to another IP without permission and you can and probably will be prosecuted. They probably have a warrant for your arrest. If I were you would leave and go stay the night at a friends house. They typically like to use a dozen men when they raid your has at 3AM in the morning.
Edit: Telnet is hardcore shit. You don't fuck with it unless you know what you're doing.

You won't get prosecuted for trying to connect to a machine with telnet. 99 times out of 100 they're not running the telnet server software anyway. In any case, if anyone does call to ask, "I mistyped the address of my paid-for shell account".
Nobody's going to bother. People do fucking PORT SCANNING all the time, and it's generally ignored because it's so common, and it's a lot closer to illegal than an attempted telnet connection.
If messing around with ports sent people to jail, I'd be in jail 500000+ times already.

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't so much worried about getting prosecuted. I was more worried if the owner of the other computer could see if I were connected to him some kind of way. I ran a port scanner on the IP address and port 23 was closed. But when I tried connecting to it with telnet (I got that message about sending password info blah blah), and then I ran the port scanner again and the port had opened.
