I like to think of Him as a loving, benevolent, patient God that will for the most part allow you in his kindom if you just believe in him. The reason im posting this is because me and a friend of mind who happens to be catholic just had a very heated discussion about it. He was trying to say that God is bascily a ruthless tyrant and you must constantly repent and worship him or ELSE. HELLFIRE AND BRIMSTONE. Anyways, whaddya think?

Live in glee that he will suffer every day of his life under such stupid things.
If he really thinks that, let him make a hell out of heaven.
Get the fuck out of here with your misinformation.
Seriously, you pious fag. Shouldn't your type have died out...Oh, say...2000 years ago?
The Bible doesn't really give a good description of God, in fact even gives both of those descriptions and others.
So, as a christian it is probably in your best interest to look at God as benevolent and loving.
I'm also assuming that you are protestant(of some kind), so that would explain the big difference between you and your Catholic friend. Catholics are taught much more about authority and quite a bit less about forgiveness.
The most interesting description of God in the Bible I find the most interesting-Elohim, found in verse 3 of Gensis. Since most people are only aware of what the Bible says in english, they wont realize that is a description. 'EI' is the root for deity in Hebrew, 'Eloh' means female deity, and 'im' is the plural ending for things masculine. This could be taken as either 'gods and goddesses' or 'duel gendered deity' but in verse 26 and 27 Elohim is referred to as plural. (Adam is also referred to in plural in Genesis).
So I would like Christians to think about the ramifications of the beginning of the Bible saying "the Gods and Goddesses created the Adamic race in their likeness"

BTW, ^ this sort of hateful and meanspirited post is inappropriate. Consider this your only warning.
Back to topic--OPs friend is seeing God in a level one consciousness--OP is seeing God in a level three or maybe four consciousness. (This concept is explored more fully in the seven faces of God thread.)
Handy thing about God is that, being infinite, pretty much anything you might say about him/her/it/them/whatever will hold some water.

As to what these things truly mean, I have only began to experience as I have only known Christ for one year and three hundred thirty three days, but these are what I, in my limited understanding, have faith to be the attributes of God:
First, and foremost, God Is
God is Holy Holy Holy
God is Eternally Loving
God is Eternally Righteous
God is Eternally Merciful
God is Eternally Compassionate
God is Eternally Forgiving
God is Eternally Wrathful
God is Eternally Jealous
God is Eternally Strong
God is Eternally Glorious
God is Eternally Graceful
God is Eternally Patient
God is Eternally Wise
God is Eternally Understanding
God is Eternal Spirit
God is Eternal Creation
God is Eternal Destruction
God is Eternal
God is unknown by any but the Son
God's love is so great that He manifested Himself in the flesh and bore the iniquities of the world, suffering all manner of shame and abuse for the salvation of mankind.
God is the Way
God is the Truth
God is the Life
God is the Beginning
God is the End
God is the Light that pierces the darkness and is unbounded by all comprehension
God cannot be tempted to sin
God is Eternally Provident
Alright, I know I'm missing a lot here, but I know only what has been shown to me.
Hexadecimal, you reminded me of something I should share.
My interpretation of the Tetragrammaton is that its meaning is Unity.
To elaborate more on what I said earlier, seeing god as a series of separate deities is a legitimate understanding of god. Even the Egyptians said that they only described the deities as separate for practical purposes because they could not truly understand the nature of the divine.

You only have to worry if you serve God, and don't accept that you're one of his children. Jesus knew he was one of his children, not his only child though. This is a quote of Jesus himself, the man your stupid little religions are supposedly based around. "The law was made for servants- love God as I love him, as his son! What have us sons of God to do with morality!" I'm a free will, much like God, a reflection of God. I don't serve God, I'm Will in its manifestation upon this earth, separate, but an extension like a son is of a father. Even you are a servant to God, because you believe much as your friend does that there are conditions to God accepting you. This is laughable to me, as you completely missed the message, just as much as your friend. Serving God requires one to act against himself, essentially hating Gods creation, you.

God, can also be summed up in one phrase, God is "Will to power". God isn't a being, God is the Will behind everything. Doesn't matter what it is, cause there is no Good and Evil when it comes to God. It's just the universal Will, pressure that creates form, all form. There is no conscious being giving a shit about you, you're just a product. If your life is great, it probably has nothing to do with God, but how your parents and teachers in life affected the Will in you, and also where you grew up. Someone who grows up in a western country is a lot more likely to say that God gave them a good life. God doesn't do special favors, focus on any single person or anything, God is simply Will.

That's a great idea. It could be about a gay lawyer and his wacko designer roommate that he used to date before he realized he was gay. Then all we need is a super flamboyant friend, and a psycho secretary for Grace. The setting could be new york. lol.

I think you ignore something very important in your own conception of God as Will. You say God has nothing to do with you having a great life, but rather it is your parents and teachers. Now, where did they learn to influence properly? Their teachers and parents? And so on? What of the first string of humanity? What influenced them? Watching animals? And what gave these animals their instincts? What drives evolution? What organized the primordial sludge that life came from? What ordered the elements that comprise the worlds and stars and various moving objects of space? What bore hydrogen and the processes needed to create the heavier elements from it?
Now, if the Will inside of you is affected by others, and they by others, and so on and so on...back into the point of no life, back into the point of no matter, what is? You've already decided that God is...so how can you say that God has nothing to do with what your life is like when God is the original cause and the original affection of all existence?

I don't think there exists any understanding that is illegitimate for us humans, but they are all incomplete. I feel as though I have been shown a great deal of what God is throughout my life, but I remain humbled in that my conception of God can never be equal to what God really is.

I think you believe in two clearly different Gods.
One of you believes in the God of the old testement, and the other in the new God.
I say they must be two different Gods, b/c they possess strikingly different outlooks and approaches, and an all knowing, infallible, omnipresent being would never need to change his/her outlook now would it?
The bottom line is, you both believe in utter horseshit.

Why would you assume anything was needed to organize everything. You have absolutely no proof of this, but a Will is observable in all forms of life. Everything that the universe can be is of a single conscious, a single Will. However this conscious isn't like our own, it doesn't have to do anything, it is everything. Energy, which all things are born of, is mechanical. And just like anything mechanical, it has limitations of it's function. A being that consciously tinkers with things isn't necessary with a material like this. We can define energy's characteristics, but nothing is needed except push or Will, which is the natural property of energy, infinite flow. You're probably also making assumptions that nothing existed before this Big bang; while current physics is starting to shift it's theories to a perpetual universe. There is only sufficient evidence to point to God being flowing energy. Since nothing can be created or destroyed, and objects in motion can't be stopped unless an equal and opposite motion is applied, it flows infinitely, and will generate all things within the materials capabilities. God doesn't need to touch a thing, and metaphors of a God that does something are backed by absolutely nothing. Really, I could pose the question, why would there be a need for a conscious God that does anything? Seems to be no point in it. There certainly isn't any evidence pointing to a need for a conscious and manipulating being. Your assertion would also lead to questions such as, where did God come from? A conscious God can just exist, if the universe can't? See my conclusion ends right there. There is nothing greater than a single Conscious, Will, and Energy field for those things to manifest themselves in. There is no further extrapolation on it, it's final.

See Anarchists and people who do not believe in a "God" are just the sheep of the world really its silly. I think the idea of God is good but organized religion fails like church's and shit are cults there no good a Belief in God should be just one man who believes in there own idea of God. I think God is or Will power and the thing that makes us all want to do good even if sometimes people try to do good in wrong ways. I don't think any man good see God or find proof of it I think that if man was to look at God the man would burst into flames or something even Einstein believed in a God all great minds do doesn't have to be the christian God or w,e other God.
God is a it not a him or her it is nothing it is everything it is the water the air the trees it is what makes us each unique

There is no logical way of saying how the energy in our universe was created. But if it were up to logic, based off of science, it is safe to say that our universe has always been and always will be. This is where logic loses its integrity. In a logical world everything has a beginning and an end. Are you quasi religious enough to believe in something infinite residing in a time-based world? I think you are.
Why is it then incomprehensible to say that there is something infinite residing outside the realm of a time-based world? Does logic prevent or encourage such a belief that says "anything outside of time is infinite"?
I believe that my God resides beyond the constraints of time and energy and laws and Will's of this world. It is a world that no one will know anything about until they enter it, because until we enter it, our consciousness will be overwhelmed with the questions of time.
To me, this is much more easy to believe than an infinite "anything" in a world bound with time.

Religion is merely pointless tradition. You only believe because either your parents told you to, or you "found" god later in life. Theonly reason people think this is because they stop doing bad stuff, which soceity says should make them feel good. Besides, while there may be a creator, the chances of christianity or any of the other religions getting it right is billions to one. God is merely a political invention to prevent people from doing what they want. Without religion the world would be a better place.
