View Full Version : Hobby rocket motors + fireworks

So I've been messing around with a few hobby rocket motors that I've had lying around for a while, unwrapped the cardboard, separated the ends/nozzle/etc and shaved it into a nice powder with a knife ..
So to actually prepare it, I've put about 2/3 of the powder of one of them (Just C motors) into a bit of 5/8" OD copper pipe, crimped the ends and with a bit of tissue paper stuffed in as a plug on one end to keep the powder in and to prevent it igniting when crimping .. with a fuse stuck in one end .. should make a nice miniature pipe bomb ?
Couple questions:
It's just normal black powder in these motors?
Will this amount be 'enough' to be useful as a 'pipe bomb' ? ..
If so, what would be the approximate radius where shrapnel would be overground or stuck into the earth? ..
Also, guy fawkes night in the UK is coming up soon, I'm thinking there'll be loads of failed fireworks lying around that I could go and collect .. this idea sound plausible and what useful sorta stuff could I get from them?

Get out of my BB.

you know despite it is a explosive and it is metal the best part about somthing dangerous in the adrenaline from it .... we used to hold them till there was barly any fuse left then toss last min .... the cool ones were the ones what blew up while still in the air ...
give it try ... it is fun i think you and your friend would enjoy it .. plus the higher you toss them the louder the sound ;)
Enjoy halloween ;)

On topic, I like to you 1/2A's, as othewise it goes too high. Also, scrape out the delay comp. Otherwise it starts going sideways. I have a nice wooden scraper I made for this, it works like a charm. But you realize how much they are ripping you off for these motors.

You should not use metal casings... they are for noob pyros. It means that you are too lazy to make cardboard tubes for salutes.
*unfortunately I am guilty of this sometimes
Cardboard or plastic make perfectly good casings. There's no excuse for using metal unless you're trying to hurt people.
If you're too lazy to roll casings just get some plastic piping and seal the ends with hot melt glue gun glue. Unless the plastic is brittle it will come away from the explosion in one piece.

hdpe=good, pvc will shatter like a mofo.
Also, be careful with exotic explosives and metal, some nasty reactions can occur leaving you with a very sensitive pipebomb.

Those Yellow PVC pipes won't do much good no, they'll crack and shatter and a lot of the blast leaks out if you're using BP. No problem if you're using flash, other than the fact that you're sending plastic shrapnel in every direction which is more difficult to remove than metal shrap.
So if you do end up using crappy plastic, be sure to give it a good wrapping of duct tape.
The use of metal casings is excusabl if you're experienced and taking the necessairy safety precautions.
And here's for you to know what's liable to happen if you aren't and/or don't:

There is no safe distance for metal shrapnel. It can fly hundred meters, or even more - if you are unlucky, one can hit you if you don't take a cover. And, if you are unlucky enough, it can hit you in the eye.......
