View Full Version : Rituals
well magickly speaking i have only moderate expeirience but i am very well read on the subject.
in the beginning i began doing Complex rituals and such ( a few succesfull a few unsuccesfull) because i thought they were cooler but i was unsatisfied with my progress so i decided to take a few steps back and use meditations and more "non-ritualistic" magick and again had moderate succes.
i do not yet know if i am ready to progress on to stronger magick but i am kind of "out of things to try" i am good at finding ways to solve problems magickaly but (ironically) my problem is that i can not find enough problems to solve.
i still wish to do more magick and i would like some suggestions on anything i can try i.e. recomended books, spells, rituals, meditations or jusst general advice on how to magickly better myself
And if it helps i prefer darker imagery but it is not needed
short version: i want recomendations for ways to better my expeirience in magick
That reminds me of how I felt lately trying to practice tarot readings. I can't ever think of good questions...
I am not sure how far along you are(I am a neophyte/zelator at best to be totally honest), but I have been going over the book Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig, and I have started but not really gotten into several other books such as Israel Regardie's Complete Golden Dawn system of magic.
I am assuming you have been practicing Ceremonial Magick, so if you arn't really connecting with it you could try other paths such as witchcraft or yoga. The important part of what you are doing is how natural it feels to you, or how well it seems to resonate with you.

i know what you mean but i feel more tuned into ceremonial magick and it works better for me i just feel i need to master "Mental Magick" before i can go into ceremonial magick. my big problem is that i cant do it unless i need something and right now i doont have any goals i know i can solve with magick
You could try doing a lot of *white* magick while not working on grey magick, to help achieve your goals.
For example, try one of those "self initiation into the golden dawn" books and do the elemental watchtower rituals until you have them down. I read somewhere that they suggest doing it as many as 50 times to get the full psychic effect out of each ritual. Which sounds horribly over the top to me, but it would definitely be a good way to increase your magical potential without anything to apply it to.
You could also try learning Hebrew and gematria if you havn't already. This would probably be beneficial in the long run.

I suggest you read some of the books Rudolf Steiner wrote in the early 20th century.

Read Theosophy (linked in the link) first and then move on to Occult Science.
Essentially all magick is, is understanding and using your soul. That is what his book Theosophy is written about scientifically.
Since you don't have any goals you wish to accomplish right now with magick, you may as well gain a better Understanding of the theory behind Spiritual Science.

I tried to exclusively do ritualistic/ceremonial magick when I first began, and to be honest, it made for a rocky start. If you are an absolute beginner I'd recommend you work on two things to help kind of condition your mental state for working on more complicated ceremonial things.
The first is meditation, this can really help you a LOT. Since a lot of ceremonial magick requires vivid visualization, you need to be able to filter out all the useless thoughts that will distract you from what you're doing. I have a very active mind and found it very difficult to focus, so I use a relaxing music or ambiance to distract a part of my mind. I'd check out the mediation thread (http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2079572) and find something that works for you.
I'd also recommend practicing pranayama. It teaches excellent control over the body as well as the mind. It really opened a lot of doors for me when I learned how to control physical things such as body temperature and heart rate, and subtler things like focus and flow of chakra.

I would suggest looking into Practical Candle Magick by Raymond Buckland.
Simple, elegant and effective.

I can personally recommend Crowley's works. You don't need to be a Thelemite or initiated in the OTO to benefit from Magick In Theory and Practice. If you enjoy it, if it works for you, I suggest picking up a copy of Liber 777 to help interpret the many symbols Crowley weaves into his treatises on magick.
If you like ritualistic magick (ceremonial magick, etc.) then read up on Eliphas Levi's work with the goetia.
My biggest suggestion is to google LBRP (lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram [also useful for invocation]) and begin practice immediately. The LBRP has benefited my life in many ways, and any fraters present will definitely understand why Crowley called it "the medicine of metals".
For a good mantra, try using IAO. I first encountered this word in the gnostic mass, and Magick In Theory and Practice devotes an entire chapter to its efficacy.
