So it has come to my attention that Clamato juice (clams and tomatoes) is solely a Canadian concoction. I only found this out because one of my buddies just got back from Florida, and the first bar he was in, he asked for a beer and clam, and they had no idea what the fuck he was talking about. Apparently, the rest of the world has yet to catch on to this gem of a drink. (meaning beer and clam, clamato juice alone is mrehh)

To put it in perspective, I would say 60% of all "casual" beers (as opposed to drinking beer to get drunk, not a good idea with clam) are ordered with Clamato juice in Canada. Everytime I drink, I start out with two or three beer and clam's.

For those of you who are not Canadian, I would just like to say that beer and clam is the best drink on the face of the planet. In fact, it's so good, it also takes up places 2, 3, 4 and five, respectively.

Also the Ceasar (Bloody Ceasar) is about 1457 times better than than a Bloody Mary. Apparently, this too, is a Canadian drink.

So to the Americans and Europeans, I say this: if you ever come to Canada order a fucking beer and clam and you will be in heaven.

To the Canadians: are you addicted to beer and clam as I am?

It is worthy to note that the drink is an aquired taste. A lot of my friends used to get sick at the thought of drinking clamato juice, now they are bona fide beer and clam addicts.

Beer goes very well with all kinds of seafood, actually.

They do that gross shit in Mexico too. It's really not that gross, though.

Might seem gross sometimes, but it's fucking delicious.

They have them in Michigan where I'm from. They are very good. I think they put a bit of tomato juice in them tool. I have seen them in Texas as well where I am currently stationed.

BTW, OP, this stuff is all over the US and other places, I'm sure. Hell, it's a Mott's product, I think it originated here.

Its not just a Canadian thing, people drink it around the world, and in the USA as well. There's even pre-mixed tomato/clamato+beer that's sold in cans now.

I've never even almost heard of this.

Now I'm curious as shit. Can someone tell me a good combination to use, like, the best kind of beer, and how much of this clamato shit to put in it?

And I'm sure this wouldn't be very much known in places without an abundance of clams. I live on the jersey shore, and they sell an assload of clams in the seafood section at the food store.
Maybe I should go to a clam bar sometime and see if they have this.

Uh, its not like you use fresh clams. Buy a bottle of Clamato juice (clam juice and tomato juice mixed together - just try it before you go 'ew', with an open mind. You may very likely even enjoy it!), its with the rest of the tomato juices in most grocery stores. You haven't heard of it, sure, but that doesn't mean its not there.

Combine it with any lager, and you have a nice drink. Personally I don't see it as something you drink several of when you are out at the bar, but just as something you might have one or maybe two of when you're out for that after work beer, or when you're watching 'the game' at a bar or at home with friends... stuff like that.

And as far as which lager to use, it doesn't matter much. You could use something on the high end spectrum of things, but personally I don't really see the point. Something smooth, easy to drink, thats not too strong in flavor I think is the best for this drink. I rarely drink beers like Bud Light by themselves, unless someone hands me one at a party, or some other event, or I'm just at someone else's place and thats all they have - but for this drink it works nicely.

One of the macro-lager companies even sells a beer + tomato drink in a can these days in the states, something 'chelada' is what its called. Its actually not too bad... but mixing one yourself is MUCH better in my opinion.

And just for drinking WITH seafood... beer is a GREAT pairing. Much better than wine in my opinion (unless you're eating something on the heavier end, dishes with lots of butter and garlic with seafood, then a wine like a pinot gris is a good combination).

But for more 'regular' seafood, like the clam bakes mentioned in this thread... beers such as pale ales and hefeweizens go perfectly. Beers with a bit of a citrus note to them I find are best for this. In America, Sierra Nevada makes a good pale ale which is basically the standard for American pale ales (APAs), and its readily available even at gas stations and convenience stores for the most part. Hefeweizens... especially ones that are nice and crisp, with decent hoppiness and good citrus (especially if you drink with a lemon wedge) go great as well. i like Erdinger for this.

I find I enjoy hoegaarden(sp?) with fish dishes.

It's pretty good. Nice matching of flavours more often than not.

I agree. Definitely fits in with my citrus point as well, though I tend not to mention it as a lot of people on &totse seem to really hate the citrus+herb flavored ales (such as the popular Blue Moon in the USA).

That 60% number is nonsense, but it's a nice combination. Many people go for tomato juice, rather than clam. The spicy clam is best with it.

Caesars are excellent.

I'm yet to get my hands on Blue Moon. How does it compare?

I think I'm gonna go for a bottle of Hoegaarden the next time I whip up a batch of fish 'n chips at home. Not a huge fan of the whites but it seems like it may work well.

Like sambob has said, the citrus notes work really well.

I'd rank it a few notches below hoegaarden. Blue moon isn't bad, but it isn't as good as other wheat beers I can find at almost any random liquor store around me. It is usually a bit cheaper (like a buck or two) if that makes a difference to you.

I tried a bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and I have to say I wasn't all that impressed by it. I found it to be pretty basic. Nothing in there that would make me want to have another one at all. Pretty bland for me. I'd give it a 4.5/10.

Shit yes I am.

Vancouver Island Brewery Pipers Pale Ale, Phillips Brewing Company Phoenix Gold Laeger, Fernie Brewing Company First Trax Brown Ale, and Tin Whistle Choclate Cherry Porter are all some of the best beers in the world IMO. And they all happen to originate from BC.

In fact Vancouver and Victoria are great beer cities. They both have a plethora of micro breweries.

I like to put an oyster in a cup of beer and shoot it down, dont know if that qualifies as the same thing though.
