Don't know if this is the right forum for this question: I bought aq cheap mpo4 player on ebay. It chrages and works when plugged inot the weall, but not when removed from the socket. Someone told me the battery needs replacing. The only replacment I could find was an ipod video player replacement battery. The trouble is that my mp4 player has 2 wires attaching the battery to the device, but the ipod replacement battery comes with some kind of lead and a small square pad to attach to the device. Is there anyway I can still attach the battery to my mp4 player? I've never soldered before, is it hard to do? Are the soldering kits cheap to buy?
Thanks.

No, it isn't.

Easy!

Though this is the wrong forum, I can walk you through this one in my sleep!

First, purchase a soldering iron and some solder (should set you back ~$20). Then, just use some pliers to take the sqaure plate off, and re-fit with a RC-418-X connection (couple of bucks). Once you've done that, you will need another connector, a 29-JC lymph, which you need to solder to the two wires from the player. Finally, get a 165-HPY analogue switch, solder that into place and hey presto! Fully funtioning battery pack!

Nah, just kidding, I've got no idea how to do it - I'm a chemist see? ;)

Any indication on the voltage of the original battery?

What player is it, ipod batteries will not work.

What player is it, ipod batteries will not work.

They will if the ipod battery is similar or greater voltage, the latter with regulators and/or resistors.

Ipods connect by ribbon cable, the op said that they player used two wires. but i guess you may be able to solder some new leads to the battery.

If it's a prismatic Li-ion cell - a flat one - it'll be 3.7v. All Li-ion prismatics are the same voltage.

However, some may have a built-in thermistor and/or protection circuitry. You need to find out if your original battery has either of those.

yes it's 3.7 volts and the voltage of the ipod battery is higher.

As far as I know, the iPod uses a single prismatic LiIon cell. This has a nominal voltage of 3.7v, just like every other prismatic.

An iPod battery should work fine.

Ipods use proprietary connectors so you will still need to mod the battery if you want to connect it.

Nipping off a connector is a pretty easy "mod" in my opinion. ;)

I think only the iPod nano's battery has a ribbon cable. That photo I just posted is from a 3rd generation iPod.

Even if it is a ribbon cable, it's still a trivial task to cut the connector off and bare the wires using a sharp knife.

But i believe those battery's are quite a bit bigger.
