By far the best sub I've ever had was the #9 Italian from Jimmy John's, because JJ is by far the best sub shop I've ever experienced. What franchises or family-owned shops are in your area? What do you usually order?
Mr. Jim's ain't half-bad either.

I've always heard Jimmy Johns blows. Aren't all their sandwiches cold?

Penn Station East Coast Subs beats the hell out of Jimmy John's, Subway, Jersey Mike's, Quizno's, etc. by a long shot if you visit the right locations. I used to work for 'em and they use all-fresh products essentially all the time. I won't get a sub anywhere else.
Personally the sandwiches I prefer most are the Philly Cheesesteak, the Italian, and the Club sandwiches. Though most of them are darned good.

For the most part I think they are all cold. I haven't eaten there often, so correct me if I'm wrong.
As a matter of fact, the only time I do get Jimmy John's is when I'm at a bar in the local college neighborhood because J.J.'s delivers.

I came in here to say Penn Station, so I guess I'll just have to second Penn Station.
Not only do their subs beat ANY other chain I've had, and most private places too, but their fries are the best fast food fries I've ever had.

Here's the secret: fresh cut, and peanut oil. We cooked them as a two part process, first by "blanching," as we called it, whereupon after cutting they were put in the fryer for, if I recall correctly, six minutes. After that, we'd stick 'em in the fridge, and after pulling them back out, they would be dropped back into the fryer for two or three minutes (can't remember.).
Because we cooked to order, the fries would sit out for short to moderate lengths of time. In order to prevent immediate deterioration, we blanched 'em, so that's technically an unnecessary step.
the local meat market is one of my favorite, especially when it comes to cold cuts. fresh always, good bread too..
but, for hot subs, the italian place has killer chicken parm..

We don't really have much variety in Engand, I've only ever seen Subway :(.

Bummer for you. Unfortunately in the U.S. even Penn Station isn't particularly prevalent, mostly only in the midwest.

I love how vague this is.
And the fact that it's totally true for almost everyone.

I prefer making my own subs, I guess you lose out on some of the magic though.

I should do this more often. Need to go to the local market and get some proper bread and high-quality cold cuts of meat. Cheese is already taken care of.

It's just not quite the same, however, you can make some excellent subs. I'm yet to find a sub place that has Gouda. So go figure.

I'm quite sure I could duplicate the taste of my favorite sub shop, Penn Station, rather easily. The toaster oven is my friend. :D

I'm going to have to try this Penn Station place soon. There's one just off campus but I always dismissed it as just another sub place full of unsatisfying cold sandwiches. But now I see they have hot ones and even fries! Before I knew that, I'd just go to Charlie's Subs to get a satisfying hot sub and fries meal. Nothing special about that place, but it would do.

The first time you go, just get their Philly cheesesteak, an order of fries, and lemonade.
The second time you go, get the lemonade and fries, and an Italian sub.
And after that, go nuts. :D

I bet this place is expensive as a gaggle of balls. I was planning on getting the Philly...I bet all that would be like $7.something...more if the lemonade is special lemonade and not like a fountain drink. $8? I aint payin' more for no drink if I can get a Coke or something and refill it for free.
edit: yep, I gave in and went there, haha. $8 exactly for a philly cheesesteak (the smallest one, 7"), small fries, and a small Pepsi. But thank god for that Pepsi because everywhere else around here only has Coke.
Note to Penn Station: cut prices by 50% plzkthx.
Apple tastes surprisingly good on a sub.

Admittedly it is rather expensive but that's why you'll mostly find it in more privy neighborhoods. However, having once been an employee for the company, I can tell you that between the cost of high-quality fresh ingredients and involved prep time, the cost is (mostly) justified.
Note for any business folks here: If you want to make money, franchise a Penn Station shop - 99.5% success rate.

I forgot to mention, it was really good. And filling. And OMFG PEPSI ON A "COKE CAMPUS" OMFG I LICKED THAT SHIT UP.
k.

Amen. I never could eat more than the small, or much more, at least - though the way they cut bread, we employees would cut the first small out of a whole loaf and get an inch or so more of sub.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it, though.

Local sub shops for the win. I really don't see why anyone wastes their time with shit like subway and quiznos.
