Barack Obama defeated John McCain tonight with a popular vote margin of 51-49%% as of this posting. The electoral margin is shaping up to be substantially larger. I believe the post mortem on this election will include heavy speculation that the major force this year was the economic crisis that materialised in the closing months and proved in the end to be an insurmountable obstacle for John McCain. I would also add that McCain was in many ways hoisted with a petard of his own creation: that being campaign finance reform. McCain's decision to walk the walk on the financing system that he helped to develop with Russ Feingold and to opt into public funding cut off many fundraising resources that his campaign could very much have used, compared with Obama's spectacular fundraising efforts, which have garnered him the largest campaign warchest in American electoral history. Last, but not least, credit must be given to the incredible personality of Obama himself. This man has demonstrated a bulletproof charm and an ability to think on his feet that allowed him to blunt many of the attacks levelled at him while maintaining a Presidential appearance. Partisan Republicans may regret having chosen John McCain as their nominee (as a Republican, I must admit I didn't vote for him in the primary), but I would suggest that given the climate of this electoral season (trend lines have been in favour of Democrats all year) and the damage to the Republican brand in general owing to the unpopularity of the Bush Administration, it's hard to imagine any other candidate having come as close as McCain managed. That is largely because McCain was one of few Republicans who could plausibly distance themselves from Bush because of his "maverick" reputation. One interesting thing to note is that while Democrats picked up several house seats and two senate seats, they were not able to secure the filibuster-proof majority they had hoped for, so while Obama will unquestionably have a broad mandate throughout much of his first term, it will not be carte blanche. At this point I invite discussion on this evening's events.

as far as your lesser of two evils argument goes, you might have a point, but i don't think it holds up to well. if someone put a gun to your head and gave you the options of either eating shards of glass or cutting yourself lightly on the arm with a knife, would you say to the person "no, i'm sorry, i won't do either of these things because both will hurt me?" i really doubt that you would do that, given the circumstances. i think that you would take the less painful option.

Besides the economic crisis and being tarred with the same brush as Bush (the Bush Brush), I think another big factor contributing to the downfall of McCain's campaign was picking Palin as his running mate. In doing so he completely mooted all arguments about Obama being inexperienced and knowing relatively little about foreign affairs, and some of the things she came out with must have scared all but the most hardcore republican fan base.

Obama might luck out and the multi trillion dollar siphon of money going into the markets by the central banks of the world will keep this monetary system going for another 8 years. But The young people of today will see this system fail, and be replaced. Its too bad the US couldnt lead the way now, being the largest economy and the worlds reserve currency. Rather then later when the collapse of the markets will be much worse then if we let it happen now.

As far as the gun issue goes, you're absolutely correct. if guns are outlawed, it just plays into the hands of people with a gutsy disregard for convention better we know today as "criminals".
