This is my first thread here...no I do not work for Politico.
I joined because I like to learn more than I know/think I know and also have resources and a variety of information available to me. I do not like not knowing something and when I don't, I like to have a place to get further assistance, opinions, etc.
I have been learning a bit about different weapons as I go. These have stuck out to me.
Swiss K31 (pricing, reliability, accuracy, and range)
**Could use help finding ammo/open to site suggestions**
AR-15 5.56x45 (rugged, build to suit,)
1911 .45 ACP (reliability, ease of availability, safety features)
Are there any K31 owners on here? I would like to get your feedback.
Ar-15 owners what scopes do you recommend/own?
Thanks.

1911's aren't necessarily super reliable. They used to be extremely unreliable in the 80's unless custom worked on by a smith.
Even today, with 8-round magazines, unless you have good springs, they may choke on the first hollowpoint to chamber if loaded to full capacity. This is due to the design originally utilizing 7-round mags. It depends on how wide the hollowpoint is, the barrel/feed ramp, the magazine spring, etc. Individual weapon traits.

Check out Surplusrifle.com for the K31, IIRC they have a forum dedicated to them and a few articals on the main page.

1911s as a whole were far more reliable back in the day. They were loose and rattled in your hand. The problem came with the popularity of hollowpoints and pretty much all non FMJ ammo and, gunsmiths who made the gun so tight it would choke with anything foreign in it. In a 1911, the first thing the new round does after being stripped from the magazine is to nose dive down into the front of the mazazine well. So if you run JHPs or frangibles, this can cause you some grief if the feed ramp isnt well beveled and polished OR you run a fancy new ramped barrel.
I agree on the magazine but, who wouldnt use good magazines in a pistol they bet their life on?
A properly tuned 1911 can run with any pistol out there, period.
Do I suggest it as a beginners handgun? Nope. You have to have a fair amount of skill to operate (or operate ON) one of these guns.

Agreed, but seeing as how I use JHP ammunition for carry, that doesn't help me much. Also, I don't use ramped barrels because JMB chose his feed ramp angle for a reason.

I didn't say magazines. I said springs. If your mag springs wear out in the newer 8-round magazines, or even if they aren't Chip McCormick Powermag or Wilson 47D's, you can have problems. I've noticed this in Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags, and those are reputable magazines. Also, the issue with magazine spring replacement just means you have another round count to keep track of for parts replacement.
I'm a 1911 fan, but I agree in not recommending one to a newer firearms owner other than as a range gun. They are high maintenance, even in lubrication, in comparison to new polymer pistols.

K-31 owner here. Let me tell you, its fucking slick. A fine piece of swiss engineering. The only thing I can complain about however, is the high price of new ammunition, and the fact that the availability of surplus ammunition is limited.

I guess I could get a press and make my own...where do you currently get your ammo?
I will not mod it...but have you done anything to yours? Did they make a scope specifically for the K31?
I appreciate all the input guys...

My AR wears a Sightron SII 6-24x42. It went on my AR because I got spoiled with the 6-24's on my other varmint guns. The Sightron is good for what the AR gets used for but I didn't like it on my long range gun. It came on the gun I bought so I used it for a while but the optics weren't near as good as my Bushnell elite 4200, and the turrets are goofy(one full turn is 8 1/2 MOA so if you go more than one turn you have to think about it a lot more and its just a hassle when you are trying to click in). As for what I recommend, a Bushnell Elite 4200. The magnification depends on what you want to do with the rifle. The 4200's are excellent scopes for the money.

What would you suggest for an Ar with a 16 inch barrel?
Up to 500 yards maybe a bit less.
Same as above?
Thanks for your response by the way.

But then again JMB gave us a hunky pistol that was reliable, and thats about it. There have definately been improvements made.
I carry JHPs too. Both of my Kimbers will run Gold Dots and Golden Sabers fine. Again, its all in the tuning. It will help you.
I agree on the shooting star mags. I know you said springs, but that isnt the only issue. Taking out some of the spring and changing to a different follower is no good. The 8 round Chips I have were greatly helped by some Wolff springs. On the other side, many times its a faulty recoil spring that causes FTFs, not a mag spring.
Yep, they definately like lube. My 1911s run with some lubes, and others last about 20 rounds. Im using Wilson Combat ultima lube right now, today I shot 300 rounds through my desert warrior(mixed JHP and FMJ) no malfunctions. Im pleased.
But then again Ive only used a 1911 during 1 tour, read and watched a bunch of books and videos, working on my 1911s and a couple friends' guns along the way.
So why does jodevilgod fight so much for the 1911? The trigger and accuracy potential, thats it. A certian gun called the HK45c may be taking a shot at the title though...........
Politico: Well, what is your budget? And what are you planning on killing with a 5.56/.223 at 500 meters? (waits for some story about Marines, Jasper killing a coyote from his back porch etc. YAWN!)

It really depends on what you are going to shoot with it. When I shot this prairie dog with it http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b50/Groundhogwhacka/Me2005.jpg it wore a 4-12x44. Looking at prairie dogs much over 300yds kind of sucks with a 4-12. Shooting larger targets at the same ranges wouldn't be near as big of a deal, but the bigger p-dogs were the size of a small squirrel and the pups were about the size of a gerbil so more magnification is better. A 4-12 or 6-14 would be a good compromise of more magnification without added bulk, but if you really want to try to wring it out at longer ranges you are going to want more.

My ar15 as groundhog whacka put it "wears" a weaver classic 6-24x42 AO mildot. It was actually the one suggested by ground hog whacka that fit my price range and that is why it is the 6-24. I havn't done any really long range target shooting with it yet (only 200yds) but it is intended for yote hunting. I am really happy with the rifle and the scope except the trigger problem it had.
Yeah I definetly prefer the more magnification for target shooting for those precision consistant bullseye shots. It also helps me see those little tiny .223 holes at 100-200yds when i am shooting at 100 yd plain black military targets. It can still be used just as effectively on big targets though. Also I am glad I got the model with the objective lense, another necessity groundhog told me it should heve.. I probably would have never thought about that.
Me shooting it:

My prefered pistol is the springfield xd-9. I have shot 1911/1911 customs and they are fun but I am just liking the new generation of polymer double action hammerless pistols more I think.
I have shot a glock also but the xd fits in my hand better. The glock was too big for my hands, my thumb couldnt reach the slide lock.

I just buy surplus ammo from varying websites. Wolf also makes ammo, but its like $.50/rd.
I have not modded it at all, you can buy non-destructive scope mounts, and then mount whichever scope you please on it.

Thanks for the responses guys....could someone answer this ^ question? I think it went unnoticed...unless it was ignored.
I really wanted a good scope set up that would be out of the way (not bulky or super long) for short range shooting but still provide range shooting when I need it.
Do you think I could get a magnifier? with a hinge/swivel? or does this only work with optic sites? (?=possible lack of vocabulary excluding the last one).
I think groundhog whacka has probably the best set up for me. Please keep in mind this rifle is not intended for the long ranges he and "ilovechronic" are shooting.
Lastly...is this accurate for judging my handgun technique?

For a right-handed shooter, yes I believe so. One like it is posted at the range I frequent.
Of course it only applies if your weapon is zeroed perfectly for the target at the given distance and windage is correct. You will have to shoot it from a rest first to verify this and possibly make adjustments first.

hmm, my sights on my xd are not adjustable so they better be zeroed. With the xd you are suposed to just compensate for bullet drop/windage i guess?

Don't worry about the sights. The Beretta M9/ used by most military personally, and the M11/P228 used by a few others both should have fixed sights. What you should do is fire from a rest or something to get an estimate on innate accuracy if you really want to get that into it, but normally I'd think 25 yards or less should give you an idea when shooting a 5-10 shot group or so.
Oh, and if you're shooting left handed, use a mirror image of that picture.
