Let's all make some guesses as to who will fill the ranks of the Obama Administration. It's been confirmed that Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois will be his chief of staff.
Secretary of State: my guesses are: Hillary Clinton, Sen. Sam Nunn democratic senator who endorsed Obama early on and is a proponent of nuclear nonproliferation efforts, Sen. Chuck Hagel (nominally anti-war Republican, just for some bipartisan lovin'). I think Clinton is unlikely, but you never know what kind of deal was made to garner her and her husband's enthusiastic support..
Secretary of Defense: I doubt Obama will give the Pentagon to a Republican, though some have speculated Obama will keep Bob Gates on in this job, if he wants it. I don't have any good guesses at the moment. Bush's deputy secretary of state Nick Burns may be a decent pick, a young career diplomat who negotiated the nuclear deal with India and served in the Middle East for a long time. He retired from Bush's administration for 'family reasons,' but I believe his resignation may have been political so he may be welcome in Obama's White House.
Secretary of the Treasury: New Jersey Gov. Corzine, a financially savvy former chairman of Goldman Sachs, former Senator, and wealthy governor of New Jersey. Loves taxes and toll roads, hates seatbelts, will probably be similar to Paulson. I don't think it will be Warren Buffet because he's relatively old, likes to be private, and as an investor I don't think he's ever really contemplated central banking too much.
National Security Advisor: Colin Powell, although I do believe in his semi-retirement he's not too eager to enter back into the political area. Also I don't know how Obama's party lefties will react to a Bush cabinet member as part of the Administration of change.
Attorney General: Sen Patrick Leahy, my home state's Senator. Former federal prosecutor and relative hawk on the War on Drugs, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
That's all I've got for now. There's way more cabinet positions to be filled but those were the ones I thought of off the top of my head and are generally the most public figures. Please share your predictions and arguments for why anyone would make a good cabinet member of Obama's administration.
