Not really sure where to put this.
Comedians are one of the few reasons I even watch television anymore, because there's so fucking funny ones on Comedy Central and HBO. What are your favorite comedians? What is your favorite type (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedy_genres) of comedy?
I, personally, have found that Lewis Black's red-faced ranting and Nick Swardson are some of the funnest men alive.
And -- fuck Dane Cook.

Andrew dice clay
Black comedy or dark comedy
Awesome
Blue comedy
Absolutely terrible in the wrong hands, and sort of easy, some people have it and some don't
Character comedy
That's sort of a broad category how they describe it
Improvisational comedy
Sort of obnoxious but ok.
Observational comedy
Good.
Alternative comedy
Some of my favorite comedians here.
Physical comedy
STOOGES
Prop comedy
GALLAGHER. Most of the other guys suck. Fuck your shitty opinion of Gallagher because he's awesome.
Surreal comedy
I like me some absurdity. Sometimes it's too much. As soon as we're in funny cuz it's random territory (Aqua Teen-ish) I don't like it much. But strangely enough I can't get enough Tim and Eric. Double strangely, Tom goes to the Mayor was terrible.
Deadpan comedy
Why is Mike Birbiglia in this category? I don't see it. Deadpan is fine in small doses.
Topical comedy
Huh looking at that list I guess I like it a lot more than I thought. But it should stay the fuck out of South Park.
Wit/Word play
Not really. And I think a lot of George Carlin's most famous jokes are pretty crappy.
Insult comedy
meh
Mockumentary
Those Christopher Guest movies are some of my favorites ever. Those are the only ones I have an opinion on.
Sketch
Upright Citizens Brigade is the best television show ever made. I've never seen a truly horrible sketch show.
Dane Cook
Not as bad as everyone says
Carlos Mencia
Needs to fuck off
Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, Lewis Black, Katt Williams, Bill Hicks, Craig Ferguson, Norm Macdonald, Letterman (ever since he ripped McCain a new one for a whole god damn episode) Mike Judge if writers count, Frank Zappa, Fred Motherfucking Willard
The best I can think of off the top of my head.
Carlin is an obvious choice, but other favorites include Bill Maher, David Letterman, Jeff Dunham, and Ron White.

Carlos Mencia
Needs to fuck off
Yes.
Birbiglia's real good, Demetri Martin, Jim Gaffigan, Ralphie May, Gabriel Iglesias, Christoper Titus (in small doses).

Frankie Boyle, Russell Brand and Simon Amstell lately. I used to like Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappell a lot, but I think it's about time for some new material from both.
David Cross, Dave Chappelle, Zach Galifianakisn, Mitch Hedberg, and Greg Fitzsimmons.
Love Chappelle and Hedberg, but Cross needs to fuck off. His writing is much better than his stand-up.
Frankie Boyle is a legend.
Russell Howard and Russell Brand are chuckleworthy too
and I also enjoy Jack Dee
oh and Alan Carr is growing on me too >.>
Gosh darnit.

A little-known guy by the name of Louis C.K is one of the funniest comedians I have seen....ever. There's a small degree of Dane Cook, but its not over the top like that fucker.

First joke, the one about the deer. There's also a good one about Cinnabon floating around somewhere.

Bill Hicks all the way.
George Lopez is kinda funny, too.
And yeah, fuck Carlos Mencia.
Stand-up comedy is a wonderful form of art. Best example, see "Richard Pryor". The best forever and ever. I do have a soft spot for some Drew Hastings, though.

personally i can't say anyone makes me happier than George Carlin. i got to see him just 2 years before his death and he blew my fucking mind... i'm gonna miss that mother fucker.

Bill Hicks.
George Carlin.
Mitch Hedberg.
Richard Pryor.
Bill Bailey.
Paul Merton.
Sean Lock.
Sam Kinison.
Lenny Bruce.
Those are generally the comedians I listen to.
Lenny Bruce.
Lenny Bruce was a real talent. Unfortunately his name is mostly lost to American pop culture, though his impact on the art of stand-up comedy was enormous.

Rodney Dangerfield is hilarious. He can go on forever about how he gets 'no respect'. Sometimes it's just hilariously creative.

I mentioned Bill Bailey. Perhaps if you took the time to read the thread...
This thread needs more Stewart Lee.

Paul Merton.
Sean Lock.

I love Sean lock, but Paul Merton? I always found him really annoying. Especially on Have I got news for you. If you haven't seen Seam locks sit-com "15 Stories high" you should look for it on youtube or something. Shit's amazing.
david cross
At this I shall reiterate my earlier statement of David Cross being a self-righteous smug ignoramus.
However I did enjoy his Open Letter to Larry the Cable Guy. (http://www.bobanddavid.com/2007/10/an_open_letter_to_larry_the_ca.html)

...so I scanned over a name right in the middle of your list. So sorry.
My favourites are:
George Carlin
Bill Hicks
Stephen K. Amos
David Strassman (saw live the other month, was fucking hilarious)
Jimmy Carr
Carl Barron
Danny Bhoy (seeing in february)
I'm probably forgetting alot, but that's all I can think of at the moment.
I, personally, have found that Lewis Black's red-faced ranting and Nick Swardson are some of the funnest men alive.
You might want to check out "History of The Joke" (http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=mini_home&mini_id=57887). It's this "documentary" on the history channel that is hosted by Lewis Black. They interview so many famous comedians and they discuss every aspect of comedy and the joke. You will really like it if you enjoy stand-up comedy. It's just... fucking kickass. Enough said.

I do believe I've seen that before, but thank you, sir, for the link. I think I'll probably watch it again soon if I can find it online. There's also The Aristocats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aristocrats_(film)), which is a documentary based around the "The Aristocats" joke, where comedians tell their versions. I found it to be quite funny.

I discovered Eddie Izzard recently. First I thought: Wow, a transvestite comedian, how lame is that?
But "Dress to kill" his show from 1998 is quite hilarious.
Here he's talking about Pagans and Stonehenge:

The complete special is on google video. I am sure you will find it if you're interested.

Chapelle and Carlin are obvious, also Jim Gaffigan, Mitch Hedberg, Louis CK, and DANIEL TOSH should be mentioned. Tosh may be my favorite tho, we think alike.
I'm English, and as such I crave disappointment. That's why I buy Kinder Surprise. Horrible chocolate; nasty little toy: a double-whammy of disillusionment! Sometimes I eat the toy out of sheer despair. I call them the Eggs Of Numbing Inevitability. And when I buy them, I always ask for them in the third person: "Bill Bailey would like the Eggs Of Numbing Inevitability." I did that the other day and it answered me back, and he said to me: "No, I am Bill Bailey. You are not Bill Bailey, you are just a mere doppelgänger. I am the true Bill Bailey, in another dimension." And I went, "Oh, I hadn't planned on that." Then I thought the only way to solve this, I have to run at my doppelgänger, then we will be fused forever. So I ran full-tilt at it, and just before I got there I realised it was the highly polished side of the cheese counter.

Billy Connelly is frickin hilarious. And as far as Im concerned, fuck anyone from the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.
BILL HICKS
DAVID CROSS
MITCH HEDBURG
RALPHIE MAY
BRIAN POSEHN
TODD BARRY
JIM BREUR
EDDIE MURPHY
DAVE ATTELL (stand up not so much insomniac)
STEVE BYRNE
DEMETRI MARTIN old stuff... comedy central special
THE AMAZING JOHNATHAN
john olivers stand up is pretty funny... didn't like him much on daily show..
RUSSELL BRAND from FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL is recording a comedy central standup special this month and will air in 2009... should be good
There's some hysterical british guy that's very very smart and was on "The History Of The Joke" quite often, but i can't remember his name right now.
I think some of those names haven't been mentioned yet in the thread... i was trying to give some that everyone else didn't shout out like dane cook and bill hicks....
edit::: Out of all those i'd say Todd Barry, david cross and Brian Posehn are worth the most to watch.. amazing johnathon is good if you want something different.

Hahaha, I think you mean "The Aristocrats," The Aristocats is a disney movie.
And I really hope nobody else here likes Sarah Silverman...
She's okay. Hated her at first. A lot of the people that can't stand her should try again, it took me a while too.
I've seen Sarah Silverman's stand-up before and wasn't much of a fan. However I enjoy The Sarah Silverman Program and besides, she's another famous female to add to my list of hot Jewish bitches - which also includes Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman.

I like Ralphie May. I don't see the relation to Mencia at all. I mean I can tell it's pretty stupid comedy, it's sort of a guilty pleasure. He's just got a really good delivery. Also, Cooba Dybin.
