in the GIF, i don't see what is preventing the thing that appears to be a connecting rod from jamming up and going the other direction. Or how its making a full rotation for that matter.

The same thing that stops it in conventional 4 strokes - inertia.

I can't decipher any of his PDF, so I haven't yet figured out how this thing actually works. All i see is a pointless animation, the solution to a question that nobody asked.
