...to your health than top shelf.

I was in the store today to buy a 5th of vodka for $7. I was in line at the checkout to pay for it when this guy in front of me told me that I shouldn't drink the cheap stuff because of it being more harmful to my liver. I told him that drinking any kind of alcohol in excess is harmful, but he was adamant about his own views. What do you guys think?

I'll go with vodka specifically for the sake of this discussion and say that many of the cheaper brands aren't as precisely distilled and filtered as such great brands I favor including Finlandia, Russian Standard, etc. That said, with the lower shelf stuff you're likelier to receive multiple impurities related to hangovers, but consume enough of even the best and you'll still get a hangover.

I would have called bullshit on the fellow insofar as non-alcoholic health concerns go, paid for my vodka, and promptly left.

And what if he pulled a large knife on you and told you that you weren't going anywhere and his eyes went all crazy like huh? What would you do then tough guy? Promptly leave?

He's just heard the stories about cheap Russian vodka killing people because they don't have much concern over what they put in it.

Why? When you're broke, you're broke. And when I'm broke, I'm broke, and I really don't care about buying a more expensive vodka. Doing so would be a foolish way to spend money. Heh, right now I can't even buy the cheap "omg plastic bottle?!?" stuff actually.

Things that include grain alcohol are somewhat alarming. You can usually find a variety of flavoured grain alcohols for cheap at a liquor store.

This, but admittedly, even I am not occasionally above getting wasted on the superbly cheap.

Funny that you ask this. A friend of mine ustto always say drink the top shelf brands because the other stuff is bad for you and he would always drink the best of the best. Not too long ago he died. And you guessed it, it was from Cirrhosis of the liver.

I think the OP was more concerned with impurities.

But that's the thing, I don't get hangovers from even the cheap stuff. I get worst hangovers from beer. But then again, everyone is different when it comes to what effects their bodies. And that guy was an asshole too. He went on to say things like, "Believe what you want. I'll see you in the hospital" and " I use to drink that stuff a lot too when I was your age and ended up with cirrhosis." There I was, standing in line minded my own business and this jerk decided to embarrass me in front of everyone there. Fuck him...

^ No worries. The real embarassment to him is standing in line for liquor sales whilst claiming to have liver cirrhosis.

cheap liquor is what you use for mixers. Save the good stuff for drinking neat. Those gallon plastic jugs of vodka have saved me, mmm bloody maries. To avoid hangovers drink water and take vitamins.

Yeah, I thought a hangover was caused by being dehydrated? I just have a pint of water before I go to sleep and never get a hangover.

Also, I don't find that any spirits straight taste nice, so no matter what I get i'll put it with a mixer, and when I'm doing that there's no point buying the expensive stuff. Not sure about the impurities that they leave in, though. I assume if it's in a bottle with a label on then it's been made in a factory, and if it's been made in a factory its not as dangerous as some of the home distilled russian stuff because there must be SOME health standards applied to alcohol.

Dehydration will cause headaches and light sensitivity for sure, but the impurities can do you worse. much worse if you're distilling it yourself and it's the first grog of the mash.

Flor de caņa 7 year is fucking tasty. I don't feel like paying $25 for a bottle, though. For $20 you can get pretty decent rum. Try Cruzan Light Rum (only if it's aged 2 years, they recently started aging their rums for 14 months instead of 24, and the difference in taste is really noticeable.)

they dont sell that here. the worst they sell is palo viejo middle is bacardi, capt. morgan, and the best would be the $50-$80 a bottle stuff

Generally, the cheaper liquors (vodka at least) are distilled far less than the top shelf varieties. This leaves more extraneous alcohols and toxins in the mix, which are often the source of hangovers and such.

healthwise, though, I'd assume the difference is rather minimal unless you drink absurd amounts.
