I have been becoming more concerned lately where this country is going and about the failures of government, the economy, the financial system, the decline in wages and illegal immigration just to name a few.

Another topic of major concern is what kind of back up plan could people use to protect themselves in the event of civil unrest after a major catastrophe?

A Militia ready and willing to exercise their 2nd amendment rights would be the logical choice. Are there any organizations or forums I can contact, sign up and be ready just in case?

So far the only thing I found was negative press from the ADL

I wouldn't recommend joining a militia - many are extremist paramilitary organizations for whom an association of yourself with could very well lead to trouble ahead.

A more intelligent idea would be to get together a dozen or so stable-minded, like-thinking individuals occasionally practicing shooting accuracy, discussing survival tactics, methods of self-sufficiency, etc.

What about joining a national group like NRA or Gunowners of America? I've been considering joining just don't have the cash to pay the membership fee, much rather spend it on ammo but anyone care to promote its greatness and bring up good reasons to join now instead of later im open to them.

A good idea for all firearms owners. Second Amendment Foundation, as well.

I think the OP however is more concerned with local protection should shit hit the proverbial fan.

Indeed, and I personally would think it would be a great idea. Except that as said most "militias" are actually extremist paramilitary organizations and as I recall my state(and probably others) actually has some laws against(or at least restricting, or something along those lines) militias(ironic isn't as the 2nd specifically mentions them as does US code), r actually I think my state law is about "paramilitary organizations" but the way it is worded amounts to the same thing basically from my interpetation.

Do you have friends?

Any friends with guns?

Any friends with guns and pickup trucks with mounted rifles?

Militias are the ones that the us gov takes out first. You dont want any affiliation with a militia.
