I don't want to spend a lot of money. under $700 would best under $500 would be super awesome. I want a semi auto rifle and the ammo for it not to be expensive. I have a 357 SIG P229 and regular ammo is $28 for 40 shells. I had a ruger mini 30 and I hated it because of the accuracy and its feeding problem...but that isn't an assault rifle and it was old so I dunno.
but im looking for a recommendation...and I don't mind buying used either. thanks.
First and foremost, there is no such thing as a semi- automatic assault rifle. These are select- fire by definition. An AR-15 or a WASR-10 are semi- automatic replicas of an assault rifle.
That being said, get an AR. It will run you close to your budget limit, but its fun to shoot, ammo is cheap and there is guaranteed US surplus, availability, etc.
An M4 lookalike seems to be the rage these days.
Rock River Arms and DPMS seem to make decent guns at a reasonable price.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Lava

Mini 14 and Mini 30 are considered assualt weapons according to the most recent proposed ban. By definition you want an assualt weapon.
I would suggest building an AR-15 if you dont like the Mini-14. The AR can be built for about as much as a new mini 14.
Spending the money on the m4 kits is USELESS lavared^^^^
-Will you ever mount a grenade launcher on it?
-Do you really need a 6 potsition stock?
i-s the more oblong shaped hand guard really worth the extra money?
If not, justget a CAR15 if you dont need the useless shit listed above.
Car15 is cheaper comes with:
-more round handguard that I prefer
-no m4 m203 barrel cut(useless)
-and 5 potsition stock instead of 6
That is how the two differ and in history the CAR15(first usd in nam) is like the father of the modern m4.
m4 or not MOST ar15s made now come with m4 feed ramps anyway.
-By ar15 kit from the supplier you have found the bests reviews.
-Goto your local gun store and buy ar15 stripped lower receiver.
-assemble
-enjoy
If you prefer the ak go get a wasr10 if you want the lower end whick is pretty cheap, like $400. The better they get the closer in price they get to a cheaper ar15.

Well, you know I agree on that, but people seem to like them no?
Myself, I am a purist. I prefer the AR15 weapon in its original, M16A1 configuration.
But I'd be called a fudd for that.

Well yes you are right. People do just pay extra for that useless crap they will never use. I mean i am not saying the real m4s(select fire ones) should not be ued in combat. But in a civillian situation you really are not going to be ale to get ahold of the grenades or the grenade laucher. They do have a flare luacher that looks like the m203 which is something else that is pretty useless. i mean it is big and bulky, doesnt make the weapon more effective, it could be replaced with a much more compact flare gun. i think people just get that kind of stuff for the "tacticoolness factor," so they can be all mall ninja and look like the cool soldiers.
My point is, a CAR15 can do anything an m4 can do, though I am talking about the civillian AR15 semiauto models.

Totally, a CAR15 is good enough for most uses.
Although I'd rather have those extra 10 yards of range from the 20" barrel.

You are referring to the full size rifle right? Also you get the full potential of the round out of a 20". most people wouldn't even be able to engage anything over 200 yards. But if i recall properly you have an optic on yours, so that is a situation where you could use those extra yards so i understand. But with my CAR15 I would be using it for more close range between 10-200yds. i mean at 100 yards my front sight blade almost completely covers the 100 yd military target i use.

I'm lucky to find a case (500) of XM193 for $200.00.

Stop using the a-word, people.
Assault rifle means something, but you can't own it. Assault-weapon just serves to confuse people into giving up their rights.

5.56 surplus is difficult to find.
I'd go with a 5.45 AK-74 knockoff for maximum bang/buck. Ammo is about half the price of 5.56 and 7.62x39. Downside is you're unlikely to find the ammo at Wally World.

Animals? where?
Oh, and I am talking about the full size AR.
What I'm figuring is, with the factory optic you can still use the iron sights at close range, plus use the rifle as a "battlefield" marksman setup with a universal bipod or makeshift rest at around 250 yds max. Granted, those extra 4 inches barrel, plus extra 2 inches stock do make it a handful to handle indoors, but you can't have everything.
It still fits most of the requirements for a scout rifle, save the .30 cal one, but this is more than made up for by the 30 rounds and selector switch of happiness :D.

If I lived in a non-faggot state, and were in the market for a military style semi-auto, my choice would be the FAL.

Ok, so prices for an AR15 lower is less than $200, and the "kit" is less than $200. Am I looking at the right things? I thought it would cost a lot more?

Call me crazy but I thought a complete kit costed more.

um no. a stripped lower costs about 50-200$ depending on quality. and a kit will run about 450-800 depending on quality and what you get.

Shit is it really that bad? I haven't shopped for rifle ammo in a long time, way too long actually, due to the good rifle range shutting down and only the shitty overcrowded county run one left. That's nearly twice what it was last time I looked I believe.
Suddenly a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus what are these goddamn animals!"
Fear and Loathing is a great movie. "Can't stop now, this is bat country."
Anyway, OP an AR-15 is a good choice for what you want(though it may slightly exceed your budget) and AK clone or SKS might also be a good choice. Though with that later two as said you will most likely be shooting imported ammo which at the moment is no problem at all but with the political situation the way it is atm you never know what will happen with that and if we ever end up in an end of the world as we know it situation(which used to seem far fetched or distant at least, now I'm not so sure) you can bet those international supply lines will fall apart.

Thanks for all of your help guys.
I have decided on buying an AK for now, because I want to learn more about rifles before I go out and start putting them together and spending a lot more money.
As for AKs...what should I look for? I was looking on GunsAmerica and the AKs start at $450 and go to $13,000 for some reason. Are Romanian AKs not as good as other versions?

$13,000 is about average price for a transferable full auto AK.
$300 to $600 is common range for a semi auto AK.

Meh. It is not hard to assemble an ar15 stripped lower. You dont have to mess with the upper at all. it is just installing a few parts and then the trigger. But whatever.
The akm variants are alright. I would just get a saiga, they are cheap, reliable, decntly accurate. They are offered in12ga,20ga,410,7.62x39,.223,.308. supposedly they can be hit and miss on accuracy but that is true for most ak clones. if you have the choice of a wasr10 or saiga(they are close in price, saiga is cheaper) get the saiga.
romanian aks are like the bottom tier when it comes to aks. i have heard norincos and mak90s are pretty decent. Also i believe yugos were decent.
Saigas are actually russian made and basically as close as you can get to a real russian ak. The one draw back is it come with a 10 round mag and a regular rifle stock. You can convert it back to a regular pistol grip ak but it can be challenging if you think it is hard to assemble a ar15. if you want to use regular high capacity ak metal mags they must be modified by welding a bullet feed ramp onto the mag(couple blobs of weld). also this is illegal to do unless the rifle is made US compliant by changing out a certain number of russian parts with american US comliant parts. I think the parts count is 12 on saiga. Also they do make saiga 30 rd waffle mags now made by promag that count as 3 parts but you would still have to make it compliant.

Buy an AK, buy it now, buy a lot of mags, and a lot of ammo, as soon as possible. Repeat as necessary.

I get a feeling that the ejection system is prone to jamming.
Okay, I am going to be a fudd here, but the fact that the gun resembles and no doubt feels like a heavy Super Soaker is more of a con to me than handling 6 extra inches of M16.
Of course I would never refuse the oportunity of owning one of these beasts, seeing as it has quite the pedigree, but its aesthetics still leave much to be desired.
Same goes for the SCAR's fuglyn buttstock. Why they could not have gone with a simple, honest to God wire stock or tube T is a mystery to me. It would work the same, but no, they just had to make it thick, plasticky and toylike.
What's with people and using toyish shapes on plastic just because they can?

Well, actually a full style stock generally will give you a better cheek weld than a wire stock or otherwise.
