It drives me crazy that there are 15 billion different rigs for carrying AR magazines, but the only AK magazine rigs are either airsoft shit or $150 custom vests.

I'm just looking for simple ways to carry more magazines.

I already have a Chicom chest rig that carries three magazines, but I want to have the option of hauling 6 or even 8 (though that'll be friggin heavy).

So, I ask W&C, what are some cost effective ways to carry extra AK magazines?

What GI surplus AR gear can carry AK magazines and how many?

I'm looking at getting a simple ALICE belt and suspender system and saw this:

http://www.specopstactical.com/shop/catalog/genuine-magazine-pouches-p-487.html

I guess this holds 3 AR magazines, but will it fit AK mags?

I know that AK mags curve more and am not sure if this would be an issue when closing the flap.

Because, if so, this solves all of my problems as I can have 3 in the Chicom rig and three on the belt along with the one that is in the firearm.

Thanks in advance.

They don't fit AK mags. I've tried it before.

Why not buy a cotton ammo bandolier. The ones that were disposable?

I was gonna suggest he tape them all together.

I'd ssay that i'd try the pouches you suggested 5.56 but lava said that he's tried before, i guess i'm not very helpful then

You can buy quality, new, gear that is designed to carry either AR or AK mags.

Designed with contractors in mind, IIRC.

Not custom. Off the shelf.

Or you could get some fabric and learn to sew...

My setup,

I have a first response vest which was approximately sixty dollars shipped.

Holds,

Eight AR/AK thirty round magazines.
Five double stack pistol magazines.

Radio / flashlight / misc -- pouches (four total) can also be used for additional magazines.

I combined that with an uncle mikes vest holster for pistol carry.

Then I picked up a hikers back back from the sporting goods store.

It was approximately thirty five dollars.

In it I could easily carry clothes, food, a gallon of water and still have some space for spare magazines and ammunition.

Albeit it is a rather heavy combination (loaded it all and geared up once for the fun of it) it is a reasonable load if you are in decent shape and don't plan to do a whole lot of sustained running.

But if I needed to evacuate quickly (for some reason) that is my setup.

Yeah I think it'd work in a 5.56 mag pouch fine if you don't fold the flap over it, which you don't want to do anyway.

What exactly do you need a tactical vest for? I mean I realize it might make things a little bit easier while shooting a lot of rounds so you don't have to spend that extra 20seconds to bend down and grab a new magazine you can just do it the cool tactical way but really?

The only thing I could see shooting with a TAC vest on is maybe if you use one in your job say swat/military/zombie hunter and you want to practice shooting because shooting with a tac vest and without are two differnt things so it would be best to test as you are really going to be shooting. But really I don't see any other need then retardation to spend $60-100+ on tacticool shit. Or maybe im just missing something simple.

I have a old camera case that fits about 8, 20 rd ar15 mags. But you could probably find something to improvise just use your imagination.

You never ever tape mags together like that. I'll give everyone here one guess so they use their brains.

Haha i actually have two ar 30 round mags clamped together with a cheap steel mag clamp I bought a long time ago when i wanted my gun to be all tacticool. Then I realized I don't reallly need that shit, waste of 6 bucks.

THATS NOT TACTICAL! thats wanna be tactical! only airsofters use clamps, we real soldiers use ductape and a stick between the mags, liek they taught me in bootcamp!

the airsofter thingy makes sence tough, i've never see a serious soldier with dual magazines.

I have two 40 round AK waffle mags clamped together with a fancy plastic clamp thingy, never gave me a problem, but they're not the ones I keep in the gun either.

Theres nothing worse then a COMMIE ZOMBIE! The damn zombies and their communist ways. Thats kind of what I was thinking that really except for being prepared for Zombies or Zombies of the COMMIE kind you really don't need a tac vest.

Tell me, do both magazines have the feed lips facing in the same direction?

The problem with that picture is that the particular combatant has his mags taped with the feed lips in opposite directions.

Guess what part on that rifle hits the ground first when you dive to prone? The Feed lips. If you ding those your rifle won't feed and you will never know it until the malfunction occured which might get you killed.

Yeah but have you seen the feed lips on steel ak mags. Nothing is going to bend those. Also when you drop an ak mag out of the weapon to reload isnt the a good chance it will hit the lips anyway? But the main prob i see with that picture was he had 3 mags taped together and trying to fool around with fliping ad turning that big hunk of around is not what you want to be doing in a fire fight.

I actually clamped them with the lips in opposite directions.
Then again polymer mag lips might not bend, but I agree that dirt could get in them.

At any rate, I don't realistically expect to have to use or need that much firepower these days.
Your typical druggie gangster criminal can be disposed of easily enough with any shotgun or subgun.

Ok, so I was looking for milsurp BDUs and came across this...

http://www.armygear.net/ag/store/0094a.html#

Those pockets look to be about the right size to fit at least one AK magazine each, though it's impossible to know for sure.

Anybody ever try to stuff an AK mag into one of the pockets?

Heck, if it fits an AR magazine it'll probably work, but I am not completely sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

AR magazines and AK magazines are WAY to different in size. I mean if you have a smaller capacity AK magazine maybe but a standard 30rd AR magazines are at least 2inchs shorter then a standard 30rd AK magazine. All of the army stuff I've been given to hold AR magazines are JUST the right size for AR meaning no extra room for a big ass AK mag.

A mag pouch that holds two m16 mags will generally hold 1 m14/FAL/SR25 mag. Same goes for AK mags, but the lids(if so equipped) may not close. A 3 mag m4/m16 pouch would hold 2.

I dont reccommend going cheap on this stuff, a $60 rig wont last very long.

Ive been wearing this:http://www.optactical.com/weesatch.html for a while now. It went through a 16 month deployment. It also has pouches for other goodies. If you want less ammo and dont want the plate carrier, look at something like this: http://www.optactical.com/eaakchrimo.html Eagle industries makes EXCELLENT stuff BTW. I used optactical as an example because they have good customer service and fast shipping.

Happy hunting!
