Now I live in the arizona desert. I had some old shirts and I thought I would mess around with putting some camo on my rifle. This ar15 is a target rifle/yote rig. This is my first time trying to do camo, so any tips are great. Yes this was made from old stripped/cut up shirts. Now I am not done yet either but the two shirts below the rifle in the pic are 2 other optional colors I can add. I was also think twine or bailing wire may add a nice effect.

Our local natural landscape is very dry, yellow, brown, sandy color, and there is some red pigmented rock. there is hardly any green vegetation but there is some so I may add a few srips of gren when I find a shade of green that looks good.

So what do you guys think?

Seems to me like a bunch of raggedy stuff hanging off my rifle would be distracting and a general PITA. I would get some camo tape or something. But then again if I had something I absolutely had to have camo'ed I would take the time and just paint it. Wouldn't be an evil black rifle then ;-)

Like I said it is not a serious thing just playing around with what i had laying around. And they are tied on, and i dont want to tape up my rifle because i dont want a bunch of adhesive residue on it. Also they "rags" do not interfere with the function of the action(charing handle),the scope(objective, wind, elevation, magnification adjustments), gas vents. But i appreciate it. This is just for fun though, it probably will just be used as a black rifle when yote hunting unless camo is a big concern when yote hunting?

Also I am not really down with paying for a nice camo paint job and I don't think I could do a good job myself. Also paint doesnt last long from what i have heard.

Looks like you're off to a good start. You have a long way to go though.

Try camo form self adhesive camo tape. It adheres only to itself, no residue. Mossy Oak makes it, its what I have on my k98. This makes a good background for the rags.
Just be careful to remove it because solvents tend to make it sticky to the touch and to lose its self- adhesive properties. But it is excellent.
Also, dye those white rags more of a dusty colour. Dirty gun oil will do this nicely;), unless smell is a concern. Also, fray them lots more.
But like Exo said, you're off to a good start. Just improvise according to your surroundings.

Actually they are a dusty off white tanish color. the camera flash makes it look more white. I will look into that tape. but you are right they are a little too white colored. What are some other things besides grease/oil/lube I could use to make it more desert color? but i dont want them to make it all dirty. i have some that are more tan so I am going to take off the whites and restart.

oooo I have an idea. Maybe throw the white colored ones in the wash with abit of bleach and then throwing in a brown shirt with them. may have an interesting effect. Also if i wash them and dry them wont that frey them? and also get rid of th loose fiber?

should i integrate a tiny bit of that redish salmon color into the camo since alot of the rock formations here are red/orange?

My friend had a nagant he wanted to camouflage ghillie style one time and after he did an absolutely horrible job I told him I'd do it for him just for the practice but i told him the shit would get in the way when he shot it. It turned out to be a nice project, i even hand died burlap. He loved it. About 20 minutes after i handed it to him, he took all the shit off cause he said it got in the way. What an asshole.

Seriously. Camotape or paint your rifle first, then cover it in rags like you've done, maybe lighter material that dosen't suck up water if it gets humid at night (cotton sucks) because then you can use less rags on the reciever and focus on the barrell, scope and bipods.

Also a Killflash (http://www.botachtactical.com/killflash1.html) is something you should invest in.

Could you please take a photograph of the rifle in the sandbox of yours so we know exactly what we need to know?:p

Yeah next time I go out to the desert. I started this little project this evening so it is still in the early stages. that is as far as i felt like going tonight. but I am not even sure how well it is going to blend yet myself so it will be just as much a suprise for me if it actually works. And I am guessing you are unfamiliar with Arizona, here humidity is not something that occurs often. It is VERY dry, even in the winter.

thanks for the replys guys! Wasn't expecting so much turnout.

Well, i live in one of the coldest and wettest countries in the world myself so:p

It will be very intresting to see how this project goes, is it just for fun or are you going to hunt with it?

Your bleach idea sounds interesting. I'd say go ahead.
Fray after you washed.

And I'd still base-cover it with this:

Trust me, it does not stick, save to itself.

Pardon my meddling, is your optic cracked?

If you don't mind me asking which part of AZ you in? Id say defiantly looks like you got the right colors, I wouldn't really add any green if I was you because your right there's almost no real thick vegetation here except if you go to the mountains. The gun oil on the rags sounds good though, that is usually a color that would be decent for our type of terrain. I am also in the 520 area.

i am in 480 east valley. 520 is tuscon right? there are 520 area codes on the reservation right next to me though.

And thank you.

The swede, this is kind of for fun, but if it actually works it will be used for actual camo for hunting.
