View Full Version : Mossberg 500 Persuader vs Benelli Nova Pump

Whatsup everyone, with tensions running higher and higher throughout the globe, I've decided its time to purchase a worthy shotgun for defense in case things begin turning sour. I have a plethora of long rifles and hunting shotguns, but Im looking for a more tactical and versatile weapon. I've always been a fan of the Persuader, but I recently came across the nova pump and, IIRC, Benelli is a reputable company. Prices seem relatively similar, but Im currently leaning towards the Nova in the 12ga 3 1/2" synthetic "h20" tactical configuration. the corrosion resistant stainless steel and nickel plating seems like it would be pretty beneficial if Im going to be running this thing through the dirt and I know it's compatible with a recoil reducer for quick firing of heavy rounds (I'm not sure if the persuader is). Im wondering what W&C thinks I should do. Note, I live in Canada.

As a side question, what are the legalities of me purchasing a firearm in the States and bringing it back to Canada? What process must I go through?

I like the Nova but I don't like the fact that there are practically no options for furniture other than the stock stuff. I'd probably get the 500.

As for bringing a firearm into Canada, I'm sure it would be like the United States wherein you would have to file for the necessary import permits which take months of time, probably lots of money, perhaps a bribe to the right people, and luck, if it's even possible in your country. I'd abandon the idea. Unless you're talking about illegal means, in which case, no problem.

Indeed, it is an unguarded boarder afterall(or at least it used to be, I think that's still the case). Since we can't secure the mexican board to keep those illegal immigrants and drugs out I highly doubt we can do it to keep the guns in on the canadian boarder(if we even try).

I have no experiance with the Nova, however I do own a Mossberg 500 and can attest to it's quality. They are probably both good though.

any recommended add ons? Im thinking folding stock, ghost rings, pistol grip and a heat shield. debating on flash light if Im going to be creeping around dark places. I can't stand the tacticool look, but what's totse's opinion on red-dot sights? Due to the price of the shotgun, I do have some extra cash to throw down, is the 500 compatible with a recoil reducer?

Your answer should be here: http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp somewhere, but I think it should be only slightly more difficult than buying it here. Something along the lines of getting the info you need to register it before you go down, then declaring it/paying taxes at the border.

I do not specifically have experience with the Benelli Nova however I have test-fired several of their models before, and I must say that generally they put together the best-crafted and most enjoyable shotgun I've yet had the pleasure of shouldering.

A tad on the expensive side, however.

I've eventually got my eye on the Super Black Eagle II.

Mossberg 500.

Screw the folding stock and the ghost rings.

The only stock you should consider is the Speedfeed IV or IVs.

And either keep the brass bead or add an XS Big Dot front sight.

I never understood ghost ring sights.

People claim, "Oh, it's more accurate with slugs!"

Blah...

Here's some advice.

If a pistol can do it, a shotgun can do it better.

If a pistol can't do it...

You need a rifle.

What's the heatshield for? Plan on suppressing an area of impact at a sustained ROF .... with a shotgun

Course, I don't have much room to talk; I bought the Mossberg with the 'breach tip' because it was cheap and looked cool. Sure was fun for blasting masterlocks we couldn't find the keys for, but I still can't think of a purpose for that tip.

^ I'm not too sure about that.

I always thought it was one or the other with Mossberg.

Know, I know people who modified a heatshield to work with the ghost rings.

But I don't think the factory offers a gun with both installed.

i have a 500 and i wouldnt trade it for anything (unless that something was a large heap of good condition firearms)

Good point on the heat shield, I just figured that if I was going to be pumping rounds through and moving around a bunch I don't want to get burned. But on second thought, putting 8 rounds through probably won't get it extremely hot. I really want to emphasize portability so Im liking the speedfeed IVs. The concept behind ghost rings (fast target acquisition due to the brain naturally wanting to place the post inside the front ring) seems like a good idea. Still wondering if a red-dot sight would be a good idea. Seems like everyone is leaning towards the 500, cool. Any need for a pistol foregrip?

I have a standard black Mossberg 500 with a short barrel I dont really see how having a heat shield, ghost rings or anythign else like that would make it any better.

A friend of mine has a heatshield that comes with ghost ring sights. It was aftermarket.

When swat or military breaches a door, don't they just use their standard tactical shotgun, and fire the specialized breaching shell, the one where the shot is replaced with a lead powder?

I wonder if those shells are legal.

You mean zinc dust. They're legal.

Legal. And expensive.

And yes, we do that, or we could just use buckshot. Sometimes we don't care who's on the other side, or if we do, we just don't care enough to track down breaching rounds.

Yea Ive only seen breeching rounds during training. Besides, in the middle of the night on a raid, its not cool trying to figure out what is buck and what is a breaching round.

Although I must admit, Id love to see what the wound cavity would look like if you shot somebody with one!

Got any ballistic gelatin? Or maybe write the guy at The Box O' Truth, or perhaps HMC could do it seeing as he's back and if I recall he was into that sorta thing.

I picked up a Mossberg 500 with an 18 inch barrel for $200 last weekend. Itching to to shoot an old computer monitor I have downstairs with it.

Only gives you penetration though, and while penetration isn't great I bet the wound would look nasty.
