Well, I'm 16 and this term I'm taking 1 class at the high school, and 2 at our local college, which is far less than usual, simply because I've exhausted all of the classes related to my fields on interest at the high school. They're paying for me to got o college, so that's pretty sweet. I have high school 5 days a week (only until 9:30) and then college 2 days a week (Tuesday and Thursday), for a few hours. This means I have tons of time, and I feel I could be something useful with my time.
This is where you come in. I'm bored out of my mind, and I need to build something, preferably something awesome. I'd like to spend as little as possible, but if it's an amazing idea, I could be willing to spend a couple hundred dollars. So, what's something you've always wanted to build, but have never had the time/patience/money/materials? Tesla coils? Hovercrafts? Time machines? I'm looking for anything here. If I actually do something sweet, I'll be sure to post pics. Any suggestions (inb4isuggestyoudie) are appreciated.
tl;dr: I'm bored. Stuff to build?

Just a couple ideas
Get a job
Learn a trade
Make a bong or vaporizer
Build a trebuchet
Grow shrooms or pot (then give them to me)
Ferment your own alcohol
Build a still to destill the alcohol you just fremented
Learn glass blowing or wood carving
Build an underground bunker
Mod a computer case
Sew your own clothing
Build furniture for your room (This includes hanging your bed from the ceiling)
Build an electric scooter, bicycle, or motorcycle

girls like it when you can do things with your hands. and it's cheap, you can get books from the library, and paper is cheap.
i personally like unit origami, and recommend "Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations" by Tomoko Fuse.

PR22- I think that list included 50% of all the threads you've started.
OP- was it glass blowing or woodcarving? I'm guessing you don't smoke based on the lack of piece making, so does that make it woodcarving? If you do smoke, glass blowing would be an excellent project. Go for it!
I really like getting free stuff, including utilities, so maybe rig up a wind turbine to power your house or construct active solar heaters on your roof able to heat your whole house. These likely depend on your parents' attitude towards crazy projects, so if they aren't possible, I'd suggest trying something like thinking what you would do if you had billions of dollars, then find something your good at. Find out what part of the industry or business of your hobby you can work in, and there you go, perfect job. If you're actually in college at 16, I'm almost not surprised you ended up here. Even though SG may not show it, I've learned that most of the subforums on totse have some pretty smart people on them, somehow a lot of interesting people end up here.

Yes, it was woodcarving, I've built a few random things with my grandpa. I've never done any glassblowing, and I don't smoke or anything, so I have no use for a bong, but glassblowing would be pretty cool nonetheless. As for win turbines, I've built 2 on a desktop scale, and one on a small scale (size of a regular box fan). They all generated electricity quite nicely. I've since scrapped them for parts, but I still have the magnets. At one point I was very interested in wiring it up to my house, because I like free stuff too. Unfortunately, as you guessed, my parents aren't too fond of crazy projects, and my dad refused to let me mess with the wiring of the house in any way, so that kind of died right there.
As for doing what I love, I'm interesting in a lot of things, mostly geeky things like science, but I also play guitar, write songs, etc. The classes I"m taking at college are both programming classes, and its really what I love to do. One of my passions is computer programming, but there aren't too many jobs available in the field for someone my age, especially here in Wisconsin. That being said, I have been offered an internship programming position this summer which I intend to take. Even though its unpaid, it'll look great on a resume and give me some great experience.
I know what you mean about learning so much from the &T subforums... I wouldn't be the person I am now, usually at the top of my class, above 4.0 GPA, with all my interests and hobbies, if it weren't for the people around here. These people have really shaped who I am, and I try to give back to &T as much as I can... As you said, SG may not show it, but there's some gems here.

If you're going to be doing web design, might be good to get the creative portion in there to. When you've gotten basic art stuff down you can look into graphic design/layout so your web pages will be fun to look at.
Also, one of the seemingly impossibly goals of everyone on this forum-
Kill something with a potato gun, preferably a deer.
Build a super awesome computer desk with a bunch of different screens, comps, maybe a microwave and a lay-z-boy chair on tracks that slides around the set up? Note- The best angle to work at [as far as your back goes, is 135°. Maybe you could just make a desk with a bunch of flatscreens connecting to different comps hanging above you, and to change comps you just spin the wheel of screens. Might not be the best idea, just brainstorming.

I haven't built that OSS but I have built a shorter, wider one, and I can definitely tell you it will be quite tippy. I'd reccomend either building an outrigger or just lashing two dugs together for a catamaran, then sailing that ship. Sailing is surprisingly satisfying, and althought I've only paddled my creation, getting around for free with the wind would rock. Plus catamarans are super stable so they can really get going. Plan for 2 people max though.
It'd also be good to cover the tops of the two hulls with canvas or something- you'll go down in a flash if you take high winds with two on board. Think about how low he is in the water alone, then consider that a catamaran would have twice the buoyancy and 2 passengers, but with more weight added on from the rigging, mast, and wood holding the hulls together.
If you decide to follow through I can help you out some as my boat was a similar project.

Most houses have joists that support the ceiling and the floor above. Generally these are 2x10 or 2x12 lumber. But, on the top floor, the ceiling support may only be 2x4 since the attic generalyl is not meant to be have 10 people in it all the time.
presumably, the OP's ceiling is supported by 2x4's. I would think he could put 4 large screw eyes into the ceiling into the ceiling joists and be ok. Even better though would be going into the attic, putting a 4x4 above each corner of what he is hanging and drillign hole trhu it ant the ceiling, and putting a bolt thru so that it comes out of the ceiling, on which to hang a chain.

I'm a carpenter, I know how a roof goes together...
Trying to attach the weight of a bed and a person to the celing joists is a very bad idea.
Roof's are very strong, they need to take the weight of tiles, water and anybody up there working on it.
This strength however is designed to be transferred down from above. It's not a great idea for you to have a load pulling down on the ceiling joists.
Ceiling joists don't support shit. The hold up the plasterboard and they prevent the rafters from slipping. You start hanging loads and you will pull your ceiling down, so while you will have a sick bed, your ceiling will be sagging in the middle. That's if you don't bring the lot down.
don't fuck around with your roof please, especially if you don't know what type it is.

If you really don't think you could hang your bed from the ceiling without breaking anything, then build a frame that covers the whole room. Put vertical supports along the walls and connect them with horizontal supports that go along the ceiling. Basically turn your room into hamster cage and then hang shit from the horizontal supports. Now the force is being applied to the frame which in turn is distributing it over the floor.
I expect to see pictures of your hamster room with a hanging bed, dresser, desk, nightstand, chair, and so on.

Not to hijack the thread, but I put down plywood in my attic on top of the joists and walk around up there and store lots of of stuff. Is that bad? Ive done it for a few years and nothing other than the occasional popped nail has occured.

Not to hijack the thread, but I put down plywood in my attic on top of the joists and walk around up there and store lots of of stuff. Is that bad? Ive done it for a few years and nothing other than the occasional popped nail has occured.
Don't take the chain to the ceiling rafters. Leave the ceiling alone lol.
It's ok, using the plywood spreads the weight out evenly over the timbers. It's not an issue unless you are ridiculously fat/store anvils up there.
The main issue with hanging beds is that all the weight is focused on a couple of points, rather then being evenly distributed.

ceiling joists aren't any different than floor joists, except for the fact that there isn't a floor on top of it. If it's just a bed, you'll be fine. People loft beds on ceiling joists all the time. Again, as long as you don't bang fat girls all the time, you'll be fine

no bearers and piers under it either...
Well, I'm working on something like this (http://www.wisil.recumbents.com/wisil/shumaker/), but I don't have a machine shop with 5-axis CNC mills at my disposal, so it's not going to be quite as awesome.
But it'll still kick ass.
I've spent a bit over $500 so far, probably going to top at $800.

Now I just need a recumbent bike, a motor and a CNC mill.
Jesus, this link is fucking awesome.

Why does it have to be a CNC mill ffs? They did make milling machines before computer control y'know.

Apparently the guy did use a manual mill for the majority of his work: a Taig 3 axis mill with two Sherline rotary tables added along with a High Tech systems trunion table, making it 5 axis. He said the CNC was nice, but couldn't do everything the 5 axis could.
Of course, I'm not the world's greatest machinist and my project would be slightly less ambitious. Therefore, a CNC mill, likely a more readily available option in my area, would be just fine.

I'm near Rhinelander, an hour or so north of Wausau.
Where in Arizona are you living? I was thinking about going to school in Tempe, just outside of Phoenix.

Haha, I don't really get into that stuff much man, but if I'm ever out there I'll definitely look you up. Your profile says you play guitar, we could have a good time messing around with that.
