Okay, so i've been wondering about making/buying a grappling hook for a while, what should i think about before making a purchase?

I know i got to use quality rope but i'll get som sailing stuff for that.

What should i think about when using the hook?

Ofcourse i'm going to test it before i do anything stupid

And lastly, do anyone KNOW any good grapple hooks out on the market, or any good techniqes to make one?

Now that i know this site is full of mallninjas but the rewiews are positive.

edit: yes this is for W&C, because BI wouldn't take this seriously.

edit:edit: That is also my price range (not counting the rope) so no $200 "milspec" like the stuff i've found.

Dont use sailing rope. Use some thinner climbing rope, smallest you can get that'll still fit those ascender thingys, think about 8mm or so. Makes it easier to climb up it.

What I want is one of those maghooks that Schofield uses in the Reilly novels.

Yacht ropes do tend to be a little thicker (heavier) than you want for throwing. The lighter the rope, the higher it can be thrown. Checking out some rock climbing gear is probably a good idea.

yeah, i read about ropes (lol) and i think i can get some rope from the local climbing club.

edit: okay, i'm not fucking buying that one.. i checked the shipping and it was.... wait for it....... 172 motherfucking dollars!

Use paracord.
Or nylon rope, a bit stronger than the one used for hanging clothes.
And yes both will support your weight. We've successfully used both to get our workers up and down radio towers (Dad does amateur radio).

Nou need alot of paracord to get the thickness you'd want, and paracord is expensive.
Altough a single cord would easily support my weight i'd not want to climb with it.

Nylon rope is slippry.

o btw, savage: I know, i know.. fucking ninjas..

save yourself a few dollars and just buy one from a surplus shop. your going to want to replace the rope anyway so see if you can just buy the hook for a knockdown price

crowbar + camping paracord (60 yd. length for $15.99) = All the grappling hook you need.

okay, the surplus ones i've seen goes for 200 dollar.

@lava: then i would have to weld 3 crowbars together, and make a ring that is strong enough to be able to hold my (and 1-2 others) weight, and paracord its too thin >_>

plus it would be insanely heavy.

Ask batman if you can borrow his. It seems to work pretty well.

Why do you want a grappling hook?

For rope, get this stuff: http://www.us-rope-cable.com/HTML/kevlarrope.html

Seeing as how the general purpose of a grappling hook is to climb an obstacle it would be only logical to turn to the climbing world for equipment.

Before you get started :

How to use a grappling hook (http://www.ehow.com/how_2093033_use-grappling-hook.html)

Black Diamond grappling hook (http://www.bdel.com/gear/grappling_hook.php)

I'd still recommend using some quality climbing rope with it. It tends to throw a little bit better than normal rope and like I said before you can use Ascenders (http://www.bdel.com/gear/nforce.php) with it. When climbing anything of a height where a slip could be fatal you really want to be securely attached to that rope.

For anything else you could allways go the tactical route and get one of these (http://climbinggearinc.com/cmi-tactical-grappling-hook-p-1489.html).

I was thinking of instead of acenders i would use a Kleimheist or Prusik knot. ofcourse made of quality paracord. These knots tighten when you fall but are loose when there's not weight on them, good for both ascending and decending. (and i can use them on a rope with knots)

I would try rappeling but that's waayy off my skill level, i hope that the climbing club here will get their new walls soon... The old place they had was supposed to turn into a spa but they only use it as a warehouse for the gym.. Idiots...

The only problem with those Prusik knots is they are really fucking slow. Just make em long enough so they're at about chest level while standing in em so you can slide em up easily. And that is a good point, you can slide them over knots so your rope can be more versatile.

But I still like ascenders. You can clip into them and hang leaving your legs and arms free. Then you can bounce off a wall with your legs to avoid incoming fire while firing back and doing any other ninja shit thats required.

Fuck yeah ninja shit.

Now i just need to buy a hook and get some rope and try out everything.
