Basically didnt pay ebay fees for a few months and ended up with a threatening debt collector letter. I pay ebay there fees on the website but the debt collectors still want a admin fee charge. Do i legally have to pay this ?

How much is the fee? If it's not that much, just let it slide....if you have any credit though, expect that to have a nice little tumble.

I believe it depends on the terms of your agreement with ebay, taking into account the laws of your country.

Since it seems that you're not aware of any terms regarding penalties for nonpayment, then the fact that you didn't know this could help you later. Talk to a lawyer if you think it's worth it. Collection agencies count on people being intimidated, and they often overstep their bounds and request money they aren't legally entitled to. I'm not sure in your situation if they're entitled to anything or not.

Unless you plan to pay all of the amount, don't give them anything. Even partial payment often legitimizes the debt in the eyes of the law.

I'm not sure about England, but in the USA, a debt collector may not charge administration fees, interest, or any other fees for collections accounts. The maximum they may collect or ask for is the exact amount you owed the original creditor at the time the debt was sold. This is partly to prevent people buying up debt and charging extra fees that were not part of the agreement under which you incurred the original debt.

You jackass.

Was the letter signed? If not that's a dead giveaway that they aren't serious.

If it's really bombastically threatening, with draft summonses etc., that's even more indication that they are jokers.

If you get one polite, signed letter, then its time to worry.

Send them a letter saying you need proof of agency and verification of the debt, or you will consider any further communication from them as harassment. The end.

Issue has good comments, they will NEVER be able to "validate" the debt in any case. Did you give them a SSN or driver's license? If so it would likely be hard to slam your credit.

If they do, you can request the bureaus to remove the collection based on their inability to validate the debt.
