Only because I just saw this: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16036-artificial-diamonds--now-available-in-extra-large.html. I wouldn't use it as a direct source though.

Thanks Real!

this site may not have been a good source, but if you go to that guy's website he has his presentation up there on the subject, which would work.

As far as I'm aware, man-made diamonds are real diamonds. They just aren't formed by natural processes.

You are correct, but the word fake, immediately suggests that they were created. They share the same carbon crystal structure as naturally formed diamonds^^

im pretty sure in the jewelery industry, there is a difference between fake diamonds and artficial diamons.

fake diamonds are cubic zirconia, which isnt diamond at all

^ They mean fake diamonds as in the ones made in a lab

All we need is a microwave, some hydrogen, gaseous carbon, and an oxy acetylene torch.

microwave+hydrogen = hydrogen plasma
Gaseous carbon gets deposited to make the diamond
Oxy torch to get temps higher then 2200C

hmm.....

what kind of pressure would u use with your oxy torch, carbon as diamonds is metastable, you'd need the pressure to not get graphite

i think cubic zirconia is a diamond or crystal, just not a very precious one. i may be wrong, but im more than 50% sure.

It's not a diamond. It's Zirconium Dioxide in cubic crystalline form.
There are VERY important differences between Cubic Zirconia and diamonds.
Just so you know, zirconia is a thermical insulator, whereas diamonds are conductors. (if this isn't an important difference kick me)

So, kids:

Zirconia =/= Diamonds

They should be called lab diamonds, or man-made, but definitely not fake. Only debeers et al want them to be considered fake so that they can keep controlling the price of worthless rocks and convincing millions of morons that they don't love their partner if they don't buy one.

They are the exact same thing as diamonds that are excavated, only they have less imperfections.

I learned that from watching JAG.

If you want to see a huge diamond.
Go into a large machinery dealers place & ask about a 'Diamond tipped stone dresser'

& I read somewhere that they are going to use diamonds as a heatsink under computer chips.
They draw off the heat better than anything else & are also non conductive to electricity.

I think synthetic diamond is the best term to use.

But seriously, listen to Mantikore and especially Chupacabre...

Check out Moissanite, SiC hexagonal crystal. Looks even better than a diamond.

Yeah, what they said--there is a world of difference between "fake" and "synthetic."

OP, you might want to look into the company that makes diamonds out of cremains.
