Anyone here tried a paleolithic diet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet)? If so, any interesting effects? And does nut flour burn a hole right through your budget?
Also feel free to chime in if you actually know the gastroenterology behind it, but I dont think theres (m)any on totse who do...

sounds kind of gimmicky to me. but really, if i were on that i would be eating potatoes every day. though the lack of dairy is kind of disturbing

not to be picky, but i did not know cavemen were known for their outstanding health. i mean it seems like everyone they dig up suffered from some lack of nutrition or another. so why would anyone want to base a diet on these folks?

Yeah, there's a reason life expectancy was below 30 back then.

Yeah, there's a reason life expectancy was below 30 back then.Yes: disease, hygiene, physical dangers, lack of medical tech etc.

Not just a few 1000 years ago?

Also, I feel obliged to inform you that potatos are usually excluded from the diet as well (along with parsnips, yams and other high-starch vegetables). :p

Most diets are gimmicky. The best way to nutritional health is through the eating of a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruit, and small amounts of meat.

think of it this way. the majority of scientifically backed health organisations recommend eating things from the food pyramid. lets say there are creditable people who believe in the paleolithic diet, there arent many.
and me, not being an expert on nutrition, would tend to lean towards the theory that is agreed on by more experts

All of your arguments are moot! Wikipedia is infallible! And obviously by him reading through this article he is a genius, we cannot deny his superiority! Quick, let us start the paleolithic diet!

i am having a hard time finding an article online. but rest assured there is well documented research on the study of prehistoric remains. most of these studies are on native american remains and show that the populations prior to contact with the europeans suffered from calcium an iron deficiencies among others.
edit: i found a source

dont believe me if you dont want to. i took the class last spring an my password for jstor aint working anymore.I most certainly dont believe you. Calcium would be plausible. But iron? Exactly how can you eat a hunter-gatherer diet and be deficient in that, especially today when you dont have to do the hunting?

you might be surprised to know that most of our hunter gather ancestors were in fact gather hunters. hunting, an thus iron rich meat required a lot of energy to catch clean an cook. veg, fruit, an grains could be picked an eaten while on the move.
this article, while not the one i was looking for, says early man suffer from iodine deficiencies related to his diet. these led to joint, bone, an muscle problems
http://www.fossilscience.com/Research/Neandertals_prehistoric_diet_may_have_lacked_a_cru cial_element.asp
this article shows that plant matter was the main part of most paleolithic diets, not iron rich lean meats

I'd stick to a balanced diet rather than that one.

http://www.jstor.org/pss/280782Point partially taken. As mentioned before, these days you dont actually have to do the hunting. Both meat in general and iodine-rich foods are easy to buy. That neandertal article mentions that those humans that lived on the coast were reasonably fine, which makes sense, as seafood is a good iodine source.
