View Full Version : When does a console take the crown?
I've been pondering when exactly a console can claim that it dominates a generation of console especially with regards to the current console wars. It's definately been a point of contention for me as I've been considering getting a console. For previous consoles like the PSOne and PS2 you could tell they had the market by the balls because the number of preowned games at the stores is staggering. When I went into a store the other day it seems about equal for ps3 and xbox360 for the number of preowned games, however with the ps3 games being more expensive even preowned. Another point for the xbox360 is that it is much cheaper for the gamer to adopt vs. the ps3 which is about twice as much.
Based on this these are what I think the criteria for the crown are:
1. console price = cheapest is the winner
2. preowned games = cheap is cheerful.
3. loved franchises
what are your opinions?
The Wii will win sales wise, but since the 360 had, i think, a two year lead on the PS3 it might win content wise. But hopefully the PS3 will have some amazing games in the future.

You can't judge a console on how many preowned games you find at your local store. What you need to do is look at the quality and volume of decent games (say, everything that scores over an 8 on metacritic, or whatever) and then make your decision.
That said, the Wii has - in my opinion - had the veil of 'innovation' lifted to reveal a predictable gimmicky reality.
The PS3, while better than when it was launched, is still lacking in killer apps. Most half-decent games that are released on the PS3 get released on the 360 as well (with little to no differences in favour of the PS3 - a shock, since the PS3 was labeled as a vastly more powerful system than the 360 prior to its release). Also, this seems to be the PS3's primary hope for the future: ...But hopefully the PS3 will have some amazing games in the future. - Pathetic really.
This only leaves the 360 that, for the most part, has been consistent in its delivery since launch. It did, of course, have lots of technical teething problems that lasted a lot longer than they needed too; however, Microsoft seem to be on this issue now, as the dreaded RRoD is evidently less common.
I used to be a Sony fan - I owned and supported both of the consoles prior to the PS3 (PSX; PS2) - however, I feel fully let down this generation, hence why I own a 360. Sony were too late in the game this time round and it has cost them dearly.
Face it, you're more likely to see a 360 attached to a TV than a PS3.

unless a console does extremely poorly, i would reckon a console will never be able to take the crown.
i know a lot of people who reckon the N64 took the 5th generation, but i also know a lot of people who reckon its the PS

Furthermore, I think the fact that both the new Tekken aaaaaaand the new Final Fantasy are now multi-platform speaks volumes.
Both, in the past, have been exclusively Sony based. In a word OWNED!

I heard 1Q or 09 is going to have a lot of kickass games coming out.

Yes,it speaks volumes about the insane development costs of games now, that's it.

If Kingdom Hearts 3 is ported to the 360, I do believe that will be the most epic win to ever occur - ever.

I was going more along the lines of two game franchises that have practically belonged to Sony since the get go now having to 'share the glory' with Microsoft.
Really, it's pretty sad for Sony; but Microsoft is providing the best service. In the previous two generations Sony has clearly been dominant, capturing some of the best franchises that still produce new games today. The only difference is that this round, Sony doesn't have a console in every gamer's house. Considering this, these once Sony exclusive franchises have to branch out in order to cover the ever-increasing cost of making these games.
Microsoft is thoroughly capitalising on the situation, and good luck to 'em.

Yes, I suppose it will be epic if you like convoluted storylines and a combat system that consists of just hitting 'X' (oooooooo, with an occasional triangle button thrown in there).

And playing with faggy characters.
For real. No matter how good the storyline or gameplay is, it's still a pretty fucking faggot game.
It just reeks of faggotry, from the whole disney base, to the main character, to the homoerotic final fantasy shit going on.

360- Best games out there period, Best Multiplats, Best online by a good margin, Cheaper than ps3, Better controller in most peoples opinions, Good lineup of accessories.
So unless you REALLY like the ps3 exclusives a 360 is the way to go for gaming

i hope there never is a winner. fierce competition equals win for the consumers
Computers are still the best. Consoles wouldn't even be supported by developers unless they had the anti-piracy protection they have, and its already cracked (even though the average joe can't do it).

Yeah, but this thread is about consoles.
Yea and they won't get any crowns till they beat the PC :D
Well a console that was better than PC would be pretty epic. I would give it a crown.
Other than that I agree with lostmyface. We are all better off if fierce competition remains.
PC wins. We eventually get ALL the games in the end.

The people currently arguing valid points for xbox 360's strengths forget that even with the current variety of games how long do you think it will be before the next generation of xbox?
PS3 would still be quite a useful console considering its cheap (but shit quality) blu-ray component.
Next generation will see another PS and Nintendo.
Microsoft will not be able to handle the technical rivality of Sony without compromising price neither Nintendo's family audience without comprising their large student/teen fanbase. Therefore i vote for a joint crown between wii and PS3.
wii for innovation and family based audience (though at times a bit gimmicky) and PS3's more technical but poorely advertised and supported system.
My opinion purely non-Bias as i own computer (not included for obvious reasons) xbox and PS3.
i play Wii at friends

Don't think PS3 is going to take the crown. As with the PS2 taking the crown last generation, was because it was out early, and got more games earlier leading to more sales to even more games. The Xbox 360 did that this generation. Not only that, but with shittyer hardware games are easier to develop leading to sometimes more concrete games. Especially the case with the PS2, developers didn't have to waste their time with normal mapping etc.

And the only true crown is which console takes the most market share, all other crowns are subjective.
The PS2 took the crown last generation.
The Wii took the crown this generation.
Simple as that really.

I agree with the Wii sales wise.
Nintendo have a huge ad campaign going with God knows how many celebrities and shit. Plus it's a good all-round console. Family oriented but has some cooler games as well. It also has a kickass controller concept that makes you want to buy it.
I am an Xbox 360 owner and lover. Having said that, I can't wait for some games to come out that fully utilise all that power under the PS3's bonnet.
From what I've read, it's a fucking powerful machine and the games for it at the moment aren't really making use of that. Yet. When it comes down in price a bit and there are truly awesome games, I'll probably buy one.
Personally, I think the 360 is in the lead for now for price and games. Xbox live is a fucking rip off though. As is the wireless adapter. The PS3 is still in it's infancy but will certainly give the others a run for their money, I am sure. It's integrated interfaces and free online usage will certainly catapult it into the lead in future. Unless M$ can work something new out that is better than a stupid new dashboard!

One could argue that the Wii and xbox360/ps3 aren't playing in the same league though, and if anything the Wii shouldn't be considered part of "this generation", as it doesn't utilize any of the new hardware improvements, but rather last generation technology with a new control scheme. Thus the xbox 360 takes the crown this generation.

I'd say the Wii is still part of this generation by virtue of the fact that it has a large share of the current video gaming market. Plus, it was released in this generation of gaming consoles. I see you point, though, if you're referring to hardware.
That said, in the UK the Wii really isn't as popular as it is everywhere else. Sure people brought it, but it is often referred to as the gimmick of this generation. I'd say by quite a clear margin that Microsoft is certainly taking the lead this time around in the UK.

But then you could argue that it's absolutely hilarious that a console using "lest-gen" technology is outselling the other two consoles by an incredibly large margin. You've got to admit, it's pretty funny that the Wii sells more at $250 than the 360 does at $199, even though the 360 costs about twice as much to produce.
