I played this game years ago when it came out and just wasn't impressed by it. Lot's of balance issues etc. It's one of the only (PC) RPGs I haven't really played. Recently in a few threads I've seen people recommend it so when I saw it for £2.99 in a bargain bin today I thought I would get it and give it another go.

So does anyone have any tips on the best class to play and so on. I liked the idea of using guns (or technology in general) but read somewhere that it's more trouble than it's worth.

Save your time and just throw that game in the trash where it belongs.

I swear I saw xip or Lathargic make a thread about this like 2 days ago.

Anyways, there's an unofficial patch somewhere that adds a shitton of new features, fixes bugs ect.

yeah, i was trying to find more games like arcanum. a steampunk mmo with lots of options would've been nice, but most of the games i was pointed towards were of the older baldur's gate caliber.

they just don't make rpg's like they used to. :(

i did download vampire the masquerade: bloodlines just the other day. another troika game that didn't get much attention and the last game they were involved in before the company died. it's been a pretty damn good game so far. havn't stopped playing.

this site has lots of hacks, mods and patches for arcanum. the drog tooth patch fixes pretty much all of the bugs in the game and adds a bit of content that was cut out. there's also car or hard arcanum which adds a few new areas, items, and characters to the game while trying to fix a few of the balance issues.

there's lots of other stuff thar that's worth downloading or checking out.

other advice about the game? first of all, switch to turn-based combat because the default real-time system sucks. if you've ever played fallout 1 or 2, then you'll get the hang of it pretty quick. i only go with real-time when i'm in an area where i know enemies will only take a couple of hits to kill.

as far as classes, yeah, your melee or mage classes are a lot easier to get through the game with. technology is quite a bit more difficult, but not impossible. i think the main problem is the leveling system. you only get one point to raise any attribute or skill with each level and two points for every five levels. so if you're trying to make a character who can make guns and robots and stuff, it takes a lot of time and patience.

arcanum isn't the best rgp in the world, but it's got a lot of things that i wish other games had. it's certainly worth playing through a couple of times.

i still am a mod. i have all the powers and access to the m&a forum. i was demodded for a little while because i left for basic training and ait then remmoded again shortly after my return. for some reason, the last time i was modded, some glitch made "regular" still show under my name.

i've been told that only jeff can fix it, but he seems kinda busy lately.

This is quite possibly my favorite game right now.

I bought it years ago and finished it then with a half-elven Mage who had high Charisma and Beauty and was also a Master of Persuasion. Liked it very much. But it was far from being on my list of favorites.

When I played the second time, I played a gunslinger and informed myself on the net about the game (walkthroughs and the like). Let me just say that I was simply amazed about the amount of game content I missed the first time. Being a mage I missed all the technological options. I never knew that some of my followers could have made tech items. Never made a single item on my first playthrough.

This game is just crazy when it comes to the options you have to build a character. I have never encountered a game that even could come close in that respect. Including Baldur's Gate II, Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Even if you totally concentrate on being a distinct type of character, lets say a mage, you won't become one who knows all the spells in the game. The best you can do in one game is to master some of the magic colleges. You will have to play with another char to see the other colleges in action. The same is true for a technologist and tech disciplines.

You could also neglect all the fancy magic and tech stuff and just be an awesome ass-kicker. That means to put all the points in Strength / Dexterity and Dodge / Melee.

Or be a charming gent and gather a huge party that will do the ass-kicking for you.

Short version: awesome game after you learn some things about it.

So hearing you talk about it and all the unofficial patches made me want to play again... but it's gone. Even the booklet. I have no idea where it went. This is a very lame thing

Fucking awesome game!

Some good levelling options are:

The obvious melee fighter: Half orc which ran away from the factory (or whichever else gives you an extra character STR point for some mere gold), include high DEX for maximal melee and dodge skills
Maybe put one point into herbalism to make healing salve(?)

Gunner/explosives:A dwarf gets a neat bonus to all mechanical skills, pump some points into PE and firearms early on, just the one point towards the explosives skill will let you build molotov coctails which are horribly destructive early on inn the game. If you choose to retain some high resistance followers (the dwarve and/or half ogre) you can easely pick off enemies at a distance while healing your followers.

Charmer: Obviously pend some points in persuasion, don't neglect some combat skills though, be sure to hold on to any dynamite and corrosive acid you come across, never know when you might have to blow your way though a door.

Thief skills of prowling and pickpocket are easely combined with melee combat skills, level up as much as possible in Tarant and the other cities before moving out into the badlands.

my problem is that i keep trying to make mixes of all the different character types. usually i'll start with an elf or half elf mage and then try to spend a few extra points here and there on melee and thieving skills.

it's very difficult to do with arcanum's leveling system, but the end result is pretty badass.
